I ordered extra copies of this book because I keep it in my office and people just love it. Sometimes I give them their own copy otherwise they would linger in my office all afternoon. Edward Fickett designed and created California icons that have influence generations. I became familiar with his work in the '70's because for a time, my father owned a Palm Springs, CA resort known at the Ocotillo Lodge which Mr. Fickett so eloquently designed. His architectural esthetic was as much a part of the enjoyment of staying there as was the gorgeous pool and surrounding desert landscape. There are so many other projects Mr. Fickett designed in addition to residences and commercial buildings for example the Edwards Air Force Base and Dodgers Stadium to name a few. It just blows my mind the scope of his work! His influences remain and important part of Southern California architecture and history. This book is well written and contains beautiful photographs. Puts me back to an exciting time of design and development of Los Angeles - wish I could have experienced it in person! You will enjoy this book may times over.
This is a beautiful book by an architectural genius! We lived in Beverly Hills across the street from a house that Edward Fickett designed for Diana Ross. We watched the house under construction and saw Mr. Fickett out there every morning checking on everything and talking with the contractor. I guess this is why he had the reputation of a 'hands on' architect. The finished house was absolutely magnificent. All "Fickett Homes" as well as his commercial buildings were astounding and visionary. We had also lived in a house designed by Edward Fickett in Beverly Hills. It was beautiful - one room flowed into the next and it was open, airy and state of the art yet warm and practical. Every detail of the house had been carefully thought out to make it easy for the homemaker and comfortable for the family. The body of Edward Fickett's work is enormous, his versatility rare and impressive and his creativity amazing. This is a book that everyone should have on their coffee table whether interested in Architecture or not!
Edward H. Fickett is one of the unsung heroes of midcentury architecture in California. His work spans from residential to commercial and reminded me of influences from Frank Lloyd Wright to the Eames brothers, with a West Coast twist. Not being an expert, I found this book to be an entertaining read, well laid-out with plenty of nostalgic photos to illustrate his style and time. For anyone looking to incorporate architecture into landscape, this could be a useful reference. It was also fun to see buildings I recognized as local landmarks and learn about their history. For those not interested in architecture, it makes a good coffee table book and conversation starter.
This is now one of my favorite books! Mr. Edward H. Fickett, in my opinion, was one of of the greatest architects in Los Angeles history. To have at my fingertips so many examples of Mr Fickett's work, is just such a pleasure. The descriptions and photograph examples of his work contained in this book are a true pleasure to study, read and just enjoy. I love architecture and highly recommend this book to anyone and especially the fans of 1950's and 1960's style. From Dodger Stadium to La Jolla California and from Palm Springs to Trousdale Estates his magnificent work lives on...Sincerely,Bruce Walker
What a beautiful coffee-table book about a legendary, visionary, creative, and respected architect whose designs are timeless. Edward Fickett was the architect of the building on the corner of the Sunset Strip and Horn Drive in which we created our original Spago restaurant in 1982. When we learned in the mid-1990s that the old Bistro Garden space in Beverly Hills had become available, we were very excited because Fickett was also the architect of that sumptuous restaurant space. We immediately consulted with him - and have enjoyed our current location of Spago since 1997. I wholeheartedly recommend this exquisite book for anyone with a passion for great design or for the Southern California lifestyle, whether or not they're knowledgeable about architecture. You'll feel like you're taking a stroll through the history of Los Angeles.
I love this book and recommend it for many reasons. It is a beautiful glimpse into the history of California, but even more importantly, a glimpse into the genius of Edward H. Fickett, the architect. He was quite prolific in his view of architecture and in many ways, defines how we see the quintessential "California Dream". I love the details and stories about his many projects. I also love the details about the popularity of his work. For example, realtors would forgo using a common "For Sale" sign and instead place a sign saying "Edward H. Fickett, AIA Architect", knowing his homes would sell like hot cakes.
The creative genius and and great humanity of architect Edward H. Fickett are detailed splendidly by Richard Rapaport in CALIFORNIA MODERNE AND THE MID-CENTURY DREAM. The words and the pictures flow from beginning to end of this handsomely bound, authoritative treasure. Congratulations to Richard Rapaport and to his discernment in bringing this further and extensive documentation -- provided with much deserved feeling -- to Edward H. Fickett !
I am a real estate broker and have had the pleasure of visiting several of Fickets designed homes and also have sold a couple of his homes in Sherman Oaks California. He is well known among agents and his homes always sell fast when you point out who the architect was. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend this book for any one who is interested in design. This book should be on every builders, architects and designers book shelf. It is truly an excellent source.Tom Horn
