Bernie Sanders was elected to the US Senate in 2006 after serving 16 years in the House of Representatives. He is the longest serving independent member of Congress in American history. Early in his career, Sanders was director of the American People's Historical Society. Elected Mayor of Burlington by 10 votes in 1981, he served four terms. Before his 1990 election as Vermont’s at-large member in Congress, Sanders lectured at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and at Hamilton College in upstate New York.

(Admitted Berniac here)The book is a bit like a person journal, it's not that it's written so fantastically as the ideas just pop off and the pages and brighten your mind.HERE is the politician, the president we've been waiting for.Some of Bernie's radical ideas:NO one should go bankrupt because they got sick.New parents shouldn't be forced back to work after just having a baby.Equality for all, fair pay, a living wage, 15.00 an hour...free college tuition at public schools.If you're here as a hater, looking to poke at people's enthusiastic ideals for the future...let me stress that none of this is "FREE stuff"If you say that without researching you make yourself look like a fool.He has plans to pay for everything (i.e. Our healthcare system that is a dysfunctioning nightmare costs 3 times as much as any other country...countries that have single payer...so yeah, we're gonna get it paid for)Anyways, read, enjoy, learn more about Bernie's smaller campaigns that have the same thread of compassion and conviction as Bernie has now.And in all honesty...if you're torn between this book and donating to his campaign...go donate to the campaign...then listen to one one or a hundred :) of his speeches on YouTube and FEEL THE BERN.
This book was written, originally, after Bernie was elected to the U.S. Senate and looks back over his career as both mayor of Burlington, Vermont and as his terms as a member of the House or Representatives. It offers good insights as to how Bernie operates and what he believes in.Bernie, although labeled as a socialist, is in my way of thinking a realistic politician who believes that the US should take care of itself and its own people before we spend trillions of dollars overseas. He also believes that the rich, who benefit heavily from the public good, should pay their fair share of taxes.Most remarkable about Bernie is that he refuses to run dirty campaigns. He believes, strongly, that people what to hear about issues and not about whatever dirt a campaign investigator can find against his opponent. A novel idea….worry about issues!If you are interested in Bernie and how he might govern as President, this is the perfect book to read. Bernie's beliefs haven't changed much since he first ran, and won't be likely to change now.
As a life long conservative, I've always voted Republican. I believed I was an informed voter; I was not. I didn't trust mainstream media (still don't), so I got my news from Rush, Beck, Savage, the radio nuts. What I had in common with everyone, is that I was sick of the same mundane policies, the lies and that fact that nothing changed! This is why Bernie resonated with me. Not only was he speaking out against the grain, but his actions clearly reflected his beliefs and that he cared about the poor and middle classes. His 30 years of voting history reflects this! I bought this book to get a better understanding of the man himself, and I was impressed. I will be voting for Bernie in November and I look forward to the new horizon.​
I read this biography to better understand presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. I learned that he has possessed many of the characteristics that draw me to him since early in his political career: his genuineness, consistency, determination, and how he speaks his mind without regard to popularity! It was confusing how the book kept jumping around among his different congressional campaigns, but I caught on after a while. The tone is light-hearted and not overly serious except for the last chapter and the afterword. A recommended read for all Bernie fans!!

Senator Sanders sees the American democracy becoming an oligarchy controlled by the 1% who control the media, caused the meltdown in 2008, pay little or no taxes, export jobs overseas, and are quick to cut every social program in the process.
