Since starting photography a couple months ago I've purchased a lot of books to help me learn. I would of saved a lot of money by just purchasing this book from the start. I've learned more about Shutter speed and exposure in this book than any other purchase I've made. I had a clear understanding of aperture and ISO but even the knowledge here helped me to learn some "Master" techniques. I've now decided to purchase other books by Al Judge and I can't wait to start reading them.

I purchased this book as I was waiting on the delivery of my first DSLR. It is only a couple hours reading and very concise. By the time the camera arrived I felt like I had exponentially increased my understanding of its functions and settings, drastically improving its value to me. A worthy start to anyone's photography adventure, and a great companion to a new camera purchase.

The author does a great job of explaining these key building blocks to great photography. Start here if you are not extremely comfortable shooting in manual already. I don't have all day to sit around reading, and with this book I got the information needed so I could get out there with the camera quickly.

Another Al Judge, huge print book. It is very brief, thus the large letters. Would be 20 pages long without a large font. As to the content, my this is a beginning beginners book. If you know what aperture and shutter are, this book is too simple for you.

Al Judge, author or photography master? I say both, I have read a couple of his other books and they are all the best of the best. This book, Mastering Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO and Exposure has taught me more than the college-level photography course I took over a year ago. This book should be the textbook for those courses. I was still unclear about many aspects of photography until I found this book. Of course, I took better pictures but I wanted to know what made them better. We can always better ourselves but if we don't know why or how, then we have limits. Al Judge takes away those limits and explains to the reader, very clearly, what kind of effect a certain technique or just a slight change would make to the final product. My pictures always seemed a bit "noisy", but by making better sense of ISO speed, Al has taught me how to correct that problem in such a way that I could actually explain it to someone else. I think that is the best way to judge a book, not just by how you interpret the information, but how you can relay that information to someone else. You can go through and read all of the reviews you want, or you can just buy the book and start taking better pictures right away.

This book clarified a lot of questions I had in regards to ISO, appitature, and shutter speeds. In am new to the art of photography and would recommend this book to others who are starting out.

The book is quite an easy read, easy to understand and straight to the point. I learned quite a few interesting things - how pinhole cameras work and the role of aperture, exposure and few methods of setting it right, reading the light diagrams and using them for setting the exposure. I'd also add to this book the formulae about the exposure that are available on Wikipedia and that express the relation between the exposure, aperture and shutter speed.

Good book to help you better understand the relationship and workings of these settings. After all why have a thousand dollar plus camera if you're just going to shoot on auto? Get this book and start shooting in manual mode,

Short and SWEET! Bought this for my daughter who is just getting into photography but I also found it very helpful. Zeroing in on the basics of exposure this book is a great, easy to read primer for just about anyone. The real-life examples were great! Would like to see more of those - maybe an entire book with these examples - illustrating various techniques. I'd much rather read a short book describing one person's approach than a large tome explaining all the options. The cameras today are techno-rich and a hard-to-get-through manual is something that sucks the fun right out of a inherently fun activity. Thanks for a concise, helpful (and affordable) book!

As a physician I am in a privileged position, let into people's lives at perhaps their most vulnerable, and this book is a gut-punch. I am proud of the work I and my many talented and dedicated colleagues do, but we MUST not allow our professional bonds to be more important than our professional duty to protect and comfort our patients, or to overshadow the duty to our profession (and society) to weed out those who would violate that trust. This book is a strong reminder of why these things are true. 27+ years in medicine and I have never joined the AMA, in part because of their opposition to more effective oversight.

In this alarming and well written true story, James B. Stewart tells the tale of a psychopathic homicidal doctor and the bafflingly lax professional medical establishment that failed to properly monitor and halt his transgressions.Using a clear and engaging narrative style, Stewart presents a frightening portrait of Dr. Michael Swango’s trail of deceit and murder from Illinois to Ohio to Virginia, through South Dakota and New York, and ultimately to Africa. In the process, Stewart reveals the inherent—and ultimately dangerous—arrogance that permeates the medical profession. Throughout Swango’s career of poisoning and killing co-workers, girlfriends, and patients, concerns were raised about his behavior. Since many of these concerns came from female nurses and patients, the male-dominated bureaucracy of the American medical established all too readily dismissed—or even worse, excused—the allegations against Swango, a white Midwestern male. While Stewart himself merely implies the impact of institutionalized sexism (and, in the case of the murders in Zimbabwe, racism), it’s impossible to read this book without recognizing its fatal consequences. Both devoted and casual fans of true crime will enjoy (if that’s even the right word) this gripping book.

Factual story of a man who entered the medical profession with an obsession to watch people die. His early job as an EMT responding to major accidents fueled his fetish to watch people take their last breath. With his medical degree he was able to accomplish unnatural deaths mostly by the use of poison. While unexplained deaths seemed suspicious, the nurses and other doctors didn'twant to believe there could be a problem. Yet administrators would fire him for minor infractions just to remove him from the hospital where employed to make sure their reputation was not ruined in case the baseless allegations were true. He moved from location to locations and even to other countries where he was allowed to continue to practice his profession. It took years before he was investigated as a possible serial killer.

A great read.Swango is an American doctor who is suspected of killing up to 60 patients as a serial killer. He was not an Angel of Death type. He was a great admirer of serial killer Ted Bundy due to Bundy's intelligence and ability to fool so many people.Swango was attractive, fit, and very intelligent. He had boundless energy, which makes me wonder if he had mania/bipolar disorder besides being a psychopath and extreme narcissist.I also saw sadism in his personality. He loved violence and disasters.

Interesting and disillussioning story. The people who attempt to regulate the way we expect them to are hobbled by the legal system, and lawyers' professional ethics, especially those working for the government designed to protect us.Please read it. But you are not going to enjoy reading it.

This book chronicles the life of Michael Swango from his childhood until the present.Swango, later to become Dr. Swango is raised in a home without a father. His father, a military man, prefers duty in Viet Nam than opportunity to stay at home. His mother, though doting upon Swango, is not one to express emotional warmth. Oddly she seems to pay undue attention to his achievements, leading him emotionally starved but unduly attached to his outward achievements.Swango is at least outwardly, the All American success story. Good looking, he is a gifted student and sent to a private school, while his brothers are left to attend public schools. He later enters Medical School. But Swango is left emotionally scarred. He has a compulsive need to be in "control". Unlike a would-be cop or would-be business executive, Swango finds the ultimate control as a physician - perfectly in position to be in control of people's lives. The ultimate control is over life and death for Swango. By using poisons and various medications, he controls the fate of his victims by deciding who will live or die by unknowingly receiving intravenous doses of well, God knows what. But Dr. Swango for all outward appearances, is a shining success story, easily making a good impression on those who meet him, but not in a position to truly know him. He finishes medical school and secures a prestigious residency.Problems with Swango become evident early on. But such signs went largely unnoticed. That is to the powers that be. His peers couldn't help but see his peculiar preferences to be involved in life and death situations. As medical student he earns the nick name "Double O" Swango. Patients seem to mysteriously die shortly after contact with Swango. As evidence mounts that there is something desperately wrong with Dr. Swango, his supervising physicians discount the reports of his odd behavior by nursing students and patients. One of the most striking aspects of his story is the reaction of the faculty of the prestigious universities he works in. Being more concerned for their own reputations and legal liability they fail to take action that ensures the safety of the people they are supposed to serve. That perhaps the theme of the book: the medial community's reaction is naive at best and recklessly irresponsible at worst. But take into consideration the fact that Swango is the only known physician serial killer known in the past 100 or more years. Was the medical community prepared to see what is a rare occurrence in history? Perhaps the larger issue is just how well does the medical community police itself? Are they equipped to do it and prepared to take action when they need to? The book leaves these as questions to be answered by the reader though the author seems justifiably outraged.

Intriguing. Will leave you struck with disbelief regarding the reality of human depravity. Well written, well documented timelines and excellent use of resources. My favorite part of the author's writing style is when he switches to first person toward the end of the book. I am floored the wake of destruction that this doctor left in his path.

If you are new to washington state and want an introduction to what climbing areas exist and what types of routes might be found there, then this is a helpful book. However, this book is NOT helpful once you get to a climbing area and want to know what route to jump on and what kind of gear to bring with you. Once you pick out a climbing area you want to explore, buy the guidebook for that area and leave this book at home.

Lots of different areas but limited selection of routes and info on finding them.

This was the first climbing guidebook I purchased when I moved to Seattle for school. I would not purchase this book again and I do not recommend it to anyone. This book is very shallow as it tries to cover too many climbing areas. Many chapters refer the reader to other guidebooks. I also do not appreciate the author's rather patriarchal attitude to the reader. There are numerous rants about staying on existing trails and how to act appropriately at the crags. While we should all know this information, I don't need it repeated with every chapter. Many route descriptions have a passive-aggressive style to them which is evident throughout the book. These route descriptions give the impression that the author does not enjoy climbing in Washington and makes me wonder why he published a guide book for Washington in the first place.

With 500 pages, there isn't any doubt you can find not just some routes, but some great areas to fit you adrenalin junky needs in Washington. Another book to consider is "Weekend Rock Washington" by David Whitelaw. It covers many of the same routes, but concentrates on routes below 5.10a. Given the pictures and maps (both route maps and area maps) and narratives it seems to me well enough documented. The "Icicle Creek Canyon Mileage Chart" for example gives you the 23 mile posts to locate important climbing areas in the area there. Handy index, good introduction everyone should read and probably don't bother to. (Ratings, Safety, Courtesy, Access, and Preservation) Go for it. You'll be glad you did. 6" x 9", 1.5 pounds.

Sorry, Mr. Smoot, but this tome contains mountains of inaccurate beta from route length, to pitches to ratings. That aside, it is a great source for finding crags. If you buy this, you'll definitely want to supplement it with other resources.

I liked the variety of climbs that it listed all over Washington. I've only gone to one place so far. The down side of this book is that the climbing route wasn't well drawn and it was hard to find the climbing route. I did the 'Outer Space' in Leavenworth. The description is lengthy and not always the most concise but it was helpful in the end.
