I'm a huge fan of Middle Eastern food. I grew up in Wisconsin but we have a very diverse population in Milwaukee with every type of cuisine imaginable here and Mediterranean and Middle Eastern foods are my favorites. If you're already a fan of Middle Eastern food you will definitely like this cookbook. All the usual suspects are in here like hummus, Shawarma, Baklava. What I liked, though, is that there are other recipes in here that I hadn't heard of before. The author is an Arabic woman whose family immigrated to Canada when she was young so the recipes are authentic but also accessible. The author explains very clearly and gives precise directions so you're not left trying to figure out what to do. Some ethnic cookbooks seem to assume you have knowledge that you don't about ethnic food preparation so it's nice that the author imparts that knowledge to you as well. I do cook quite a bit so I didn't find anything really daunting but if you're a novice cook just starting out you may look at the recipes and think you can't make them. Definitely not so, most of the recipes have very few ingredients (especially if you compare them to many traditional, European recipes) and don't take a huge amount of time. (There are exceptions to this in the book; read the entire recipe through once to figure out if you have the time for it.) The author helps you out quite a bit also in that she tells you what things you can make ahead of time and freeze - there's actually a LOT you can make ahead and freeze which definitely helps out in the entertaining department.I've made two recipes so far - the one for hummus and the one for tabbouleh because those are my two favorites. Both turned out phenomenal. I'm probably not going to like store bought hummus after this. The only problem an individual would probably encounter, however, is the ability to obtain many of these ingredients. Many recipes call for standard things any American grocery would carry but there are other specialty items (like Tahini sauce for instance) that may be hard to find if you don't live in an urban area. Milwaukee has several specialty grocery stores like Whole Foods and Middle Eastern groceries that I've found the ingredients in easily but if you live in a rural area in the middle of North Dakota, you're gonna have a problem.

I’ve started a cookbook discussion and dinner party meetup group that meets regularly (1x a month or so) at my apartment in Alexandria,VA to discuss cookbooks and enjoy a shared meal cooked by the members from recipes published in the monthly selected cookbook. Each year we work our way through an eclectic mix of cookbooks, including time honored classics, rare finds from every corner of the globe, and current up and coming advanced evaluation copies. For our July cookbook discussion and dinner party, we reviewed Suzanne Husseini's 2012 cookbook Modern Flavors of Arabia (Random House).~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~قائمة طعام (Menu)Halloumi & Feta Cheese Bread RollsLabneh Three WaysShamandar (Beet Dip)HummusBeet & Purslane Salad with Citrus DressingKofta with Sweet and Sour Cherry SauceRoasted Cauliflower with Citrus Tahini SauceLemony Braised Stuffed Vine LeavesShish Barak (Lamb Ravioli in Herbed Yogurt Sauce)A Thousand and One Nights Pistachio Ice CreamArabic Shortbread (Ghraybe)Rice Pudding with Date CompoteMint tea~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~This might be the first time in all of my years of cooking and reviewing cookbooks that I’ve sampled twelve different recipes from a cookbook and found every single one to be on point. I give the beet dip a solid 5 (out of 5) fork rating AND I DON’T EVEN LIKE BEETS. The Kofta were tender and the cherry sauce to accompany them was another highlight of the menu. Oh my gosh, and the cheese rolls, they were amazing. Tender, pillowy, and warm, they hid the perfect little tangy bite of cheese within. The grape leaves were savory and bright with the citrus flavor. Every single dish was hit. Husseini clearly has some kind of culinary magic up her sleeves. And I wasn’t alone in my assessment; Paige was so taken with the shortbread that she lost her capacity for coherent speech and just kept moaning as she nibbled through her serving of cookies. This is definitely a cookbook that has earned a permanent space on my bookshelves in the kitchen and I urge to you pick up Modern Flavors of Arabia to add to your collection as well.

I have cooked Arabic food for over 30 years, and I stopped looking at newer Arabic food cookbooks since they tended towards the same recipes over and over. I was intrigued by this one and bought it without seeing it first. It is excellent, and I am really happy I got it. These are recipes with better ingrediants and fit more in line with contemporary cooking.

love the pics and recipes

Wow! What a gorgeous book, great illustrations and absolutely delicious Arabic Cuisine. You can see that a lot of passion and hard work went into creating these traditional recipes. I have tried some out and they are so awesome! Bravo! A+++++ Thank U! :)

A lot of great recepis

I saw the author on a TV show making one of her recipes, babaganooj salad and just HAD to try it.It lived up to every expectation and so do the other recipes. Puts a slightly new twist on a lot of old family favorites.

wonderful cookbooki felt like I went to heavenplan to prepare every single recipe in the bookcan not waitgreat buyerour family thanks you so much

Review

From the reviews of the first edition: "This book presents in great detail all the results one needs to prove the Morse homology theorem using classical techniques from algebraic topology and homotopy theory. … This book collects all these results together into a single reference with complete and detailed proofs. … With the stress on completeness and by its elementary approach to Morse homology, this book is suitable as a textbook for a graduate level course, or as a reference for working mathematicians and physicists." (Bulletin Bibliographique, Vol. 51 (1-2), 2005) "This book provides a treatment of finite-dimensional Morse theory and its associated chain complex, pitched at a level appropriate to early-stage graduate students. … Throughout, the authors take pains to make the material accessible, and … extensive references are provided. … Many well-drawn figures are provided to clarify the text, and there are over 200 exercises, with hints for some of them in the back. … Banyaga and Hurtubise’s book provides a valuable service by introducing young mathematicians to a circle of ideas … ." (Michael J. Usher, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2006 i) "This book is an exposition of the ‘classical’ approach to finite dimensional Morse homology. … This book presents in great detail all the results one needs to prove the Morse Homology theorem … . References to the literature are provided throughout the book … . A lot of examples, suggestive figures and diagrams in every chapter and many useful exercises at the end of the chapters makes this book a good and attractive textbook (as well as an excellent monograph). … The bibliography is exhaustive." (Ioan Pop, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1080, 2006)

Morse theory (the study of the critical points of a nondegenerate smooth function on a smooth manifold and in particular their topological implications) is a classic subject whose standard texts, Milnor's Morse Theory and Lectures on the h-Cobordism Theorem and Morse's Calculus of Variations in the Large, date from the '60s or earlier. Starting in the late '80s, due to the work of Floer and Witten, a new perspective emerged, both on the old finite-dimensional theory (Witten's rediscovery of Morse homology) and on infinite-dimensional Morse theory, initiated by Floer, which resembles gauge theory and has deep ties to symplectic geometry. This book by Banyaga and Hurtubise attempts to, first of all, present the classic finite-dimensional theory but in modern dynamical-systems terminology, and also give a brief introduction to the newer developments in Floer homology. It is more successful on accomplishing the former, as its treatment of Floer homology is rather cursory. It is largely self-contained, as an introductory graduate text, requiring only a knowledge of singular homology theory and basic topology and analysis. The book includes 2 chapters on prerequisite material, namely, CW homology and basic differential topology, but if you don't know these subjects already, in particular, the differential topology, this won't be enough to help you. All the standard results in Morse theory, as can be found in Milnor's books or Matsumoto's An Introduction to Morse Theory, are presented, although some of the proofs are given in more general form, such as Palais's proof of the fundamental Morse lemma, which also works on Banach spaces. There are many topics that have been collected from the literature, including the full set of Morse inequalities, such as the polynomial Morse inequalities, and Morse-Bott functions, which usually don't appear in other books on Morse theory. There's also an extensive treatment of dynamical systems, which are implicit in the Morse theory but not usually formally addressed, including a modestly analytically challenging proof of the stable/unstable manifold theorem, which forms the core of the book, as well the lambda-lemma, Kupka-Smale theorem, which shows the Morse-Smale gradient vector fields are generic, and the Conley index. The culmination of these technical results is the Morse homology theorem, which relates the CW homology (hence singular homology) of a compact smooth Riemannian manifold to the homology of a Morse-Smale-Witten chain complex, which is particularly easy to compute, only involving counting flow lines between critical points with signs coming from orientations and flow directions. The last 2 chapters are more specialized and can be omitted in a short course or on a first reading. There's one on the Morse theory of Grassmann manifolds by constructing perfect Morse-Bott functions on them. Here previous knowledge of Lie groups and algebras is necessary, although some of it is derived. A large part of the proof of the existence of such Mose-Bott functions is practically copied verbatim from Milnor's ("Morse Theory") proof that Morse functions are generic. The payoff in this chapter for so much effort is somewhat modest - it ends by only stating some similar results, such as the cohomology of the classification space for complex bundles and Morse theory for Lie groups, that should probably have been proved here. The last chapter and a half of the book is primarily concerned with applications to symplectic geometry, including Floer homology. A ton of material is summarized very quickly, often by just copying sections of several papers, in a manner that will not be of much help for beginners. The main point of this seems to be showing how Morse theory can be applied or extended, or even just showing THAT it can be applied. This is a textbook, so there is a wealth of exercises and a fair amount of examples. For most of the book, the proofs develop very slowly, with all of the steps explicitly spelled out, making them easy to follow. The emphasis on using modern dynamical systems terminology and theorems, the presentation of multiple proofs of the same theorem, practical demonstrations on how Morse homology can be computed, and the inclusion of more obscure results are also pluses, as is the proof of the Morse homology theorem, which differs from other proofs in that it doesn't involve infinite-dimensional techniques or require overly restrictive assumptions on the Morse function (such as it being self-indexing or compatible with a Riemann metric). It is unusual among books on Morse theory in that it is both modern (unlike Milnor, Morse, or Matsumoto) and classical (unlike Schwarz's Morse Homology or Chang's Infinite Dimensional Morse Theory). The main drawbacks of the book are that it doesn't do a good job of explaining or using the Floer theory and homology on Grassmann manifolds presented at the end of the book, a large amount of material seems to be copied from other sources, it takes a long time to arrive at the most interesting results (certainly longer than necessary), and there is a plethora of mathematical typos, much more than one normally finds (and the bibliography includes 2 of the most bizarre kinds of typos I've ever seen).

What a beautiful book.Nabeel Qureshi opens to us the beauty of a devout Muslim family, their whole lives ordered by their faith and their traditions. Their love for Allah and for one another is palpable in the pages of this book. It is a beautiful picture and one I am grateful to Nabeel for sharing. Then Nabeel takes us step by step through his search for truth; a search he begins with complete confidence that he will confirm the claims of Islam. For myself, I was reliving the search I had pursued forty five years ago, when my embrace of existentialism had left me so empty and purposeless that I had to reconsider the claims of Christ, just in case they might be true. I found myself anticipating each next step in Nabeel's intellectual journey, as each critical aspect of the truth of Christianity was substantiated by his investigations. I knew in advance what he would find and what he would conclude, because I had walked the same path and reached the same conclusion: the claims of Christ are confirmed by history, science, and reason, if you approach them objectively, seeking to know the truth, instead of seeking to prove your already-held beliefs. But I also knew the feeling Nabeel expressed at the end of his intellectual journey. A rational conclusion still leaves an unsatisfied heart. To conclude that history sports the claims of Christ is not the same thing as knowing Christ as Savior and Lord. And just like Nabeel, I asked God for a supernatural confirmation of my intellectual conclusions. And just like He had done for Nabeel, God condescended to grant my desire by specifically answering prayer requests that only God himself could provide. I even experienced to a degree Nabeel's family conflicts, though for me it was my mother's amazement and bitter disappointment with my choice after college of seminary instead of medical school. This is an utterly beautiful story of a devout Muslim's search to know Allah and his astonished discovery of Jesus. As I read Nabeel's description of his joy and relief as the beauty of Christ and Christ's love for him flooded his soul, my own eyes were filled with the same tears of joy and amazement.Read this book! And as you read it, may God grant you the joy of knowing Him and His salvation.

If after reading this book, you are thinking about which Muslims you can give this book to, you've missed a key point. Nabeel would never have trusted his friend David had he not been confident in knowing that David truly cared for him. What an eye and heart opening book for a self-described apologist that tends toward arguing people into the kingdom of God and has more of an Islamic enemy mindset ... that is until devouring this book in record time. I have a much more compassionate heart to the lost condition of Muslims and how to hopefully engage with a sincere heart knowing what they are captive too.Christians need to be more informed about their faith and deeply serious about it, since the average Muslim is more more so than most Christians. It is their very identity. Is our identity truly in Christ? This book will challenge you as it has me in mind, heart, and Spirit. Until just recently, I had never heard of Nabeel. The Internet was blowing up with postings and due to his associate with RZIM I wanted to know more about him. So thrilled that I got to know him through his powerful testimony and the incredible social sacrifices that he made in coming to the Lord Jesus.I wondered like so many why he was taken so young and this verse came to mind as a valid reason.Jn12:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit."Nabeel's life and legacy is now spreading rapidly and hopefully informing many Muslims and Christians alike. Thank you dear Brother now absent from the body and present with the Lord.

I began reading this biography with very little knowledge about Muslim customs and beliefs, but Nabeel Qureshi offers us a unique windows into his early life, being raised in a devout Muslim home. He gives us definitions and explanations along the way as he describes, in detail, the symbolism behind the expressions of their faith. Qureshi points out the similarities between Islam and Christianity, but more importantly he expounds on the differences – how the western world thinks differently from middle-easterners in the very core of their beliefs.I have noticed one common thread among those few who gave this book 1 star – their disbelief in the supernatural part of Qureshi’s conversion. He asked for, and received, a series of dreams from God that led Him to the truth of Scripture. (Read about it. It’s awesome.) He clearly explains that the dreams didn’t save him, but they did point him to God’s Word where he had an encounter with Jesus. I have absolutely no problem believing this, especially if we believe the Bible. To quote Father Louis Gilbert:“Two different Josephs in the Bible had what we might call ‘strange dreams’. One became Pharaoh’s right-hand-man as a result and the other became the husband of Mary and the earthly father of our Lord Jesus. Something they ate, was it? I think not.”

RIP Nabeel Qureshi (1983-2017): thank you for your courageous testimony, your wonderful books, and for a life well lived. You have left us too soon. Well done good and faithful servant.
