About the Author

Rick received his B.S. in Paper Engineering from Western Michigan University and went to work out of school in sales, sales management, and business development for an international chemical firm serving the paper industry. While with this company, he returned to school to receive his Master’s of Divinity degree and became an ordained minister. He and his wife adopted a sibling group of 4 children, which facilitated his departure from corporate America and into ministry full time. As someone who was raised in shame by parents who themselves lived in shame, I applaud Rick Patterson for telling his own story in a way that deeply resonated with me. The examples of his and his children's struggles slowly but surely guided me to the message that as humans, we are imperfect (not enough), but that we should feel no shame in our imperfection. All we can do is try our best to live in the moment without shaming ourselves or others. I will try to embrace this lesson as I continue my own story.

The word that comes to mind...is hope. Hope, because how can you fight an enemy you don't know is there? I am slowly learning that shame is a hidden, manipulative, and destructive force that impacts us all, every day, in a multitude of ways. Rick's book creatively and practically helps identify and unmask some of the faces of shame. He gives practical and insightful ways to continue the journey to accept ourselves, failures, flaws, and all. Rick demonstrates through his own painful and beautiful story that disarming this hidden driver is actually possible. Hope springs...

Patterson's story is raw and honest. His stories share thoughts, feelings and voices that all of us have but none of us dare to admit to having. Mandatory read. Good resource

I was assigned to do a book report on this book as preparation for my doctorate. This is a great book that gives good information about how ministers prepare their sermons. The list of twelve ministers from different backgrounds, genders, and denomination is a plus as well.

Dr. LaRue was a professor at seminary while I was there. I heard him preach but unfortunately never wound up in any of his classes. This is a fabulous book---as I am 'white' and come from a 'white church background' (whatever that means) it was helpful to me in the diverse setting I find myself in as a resource to improve my own preaching--to help me think about rhythm and style and repetition.

I have read fifteen books on preaching in the first six months of 2005. Having read them, if I could choose just one that helped me most as a preacher, it is this text. We hear from some of the best Black preachers in America - how they preach and a sample sermon of each. You sit at the feet of masters.I am a minister - white - who gained tremendously from these giants in our pulpits.

GET IT. These old time preachers knew God, knew what He wanted of them, and did it. The results? Powerful preaching that comes from being in front of the throne of God. As one old preacher once said when asked about how to prepare to give a message on Sunday, he replied: "Get into the presence of God, wait before Him, see what He shows you, and then tell them what you saw."Rico

My memory was jogged today to finish it and just like Hotez' apperance on Joe Rogan a few days ago (which was what jogged my memory to finish reading it) I'd love him to do a scientific debate on several issues in the book. I imagine that's why it's doing so poorly on Amazon.
