Louis Giannetti is a Professor Emeritus of English and Film at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He has taught courses in film, literature, writing, drama, and humanities. I used this book for a Film Appreciation class I was taking. I thought the material was straight forward and enjoyable reading. I have a general interest in film (which is why I took the class) and the terminology and movie back story have been interesting. The publisher has a decent amount of online study material and practice quizzes for each chapter that made the online Blackboard quizzes/tests fairly easy if you read the book. The only reason I didn't give it five stars because the author (editor?) regularly split sentences between two pages and sometimes several graphics broke things up even more to the point that I had to go back and re-read the beginning to remember what was being said. The end of chapters also gave the readers a slew of questions they should ask themselves that were fairly pointless as they were written. I can understand a bulleted list but 10-20 questions in paragraph format does nothing for me.

They use this book at my community college but it's nice to see that other students use this book in film school. Was happy with the book and shipping. As there is a general down play on community colleges it's nice to see this is a book other film students used.Chapters in this book include photography, mise en scene, movement, acting, editing etc.I"m taking the class online and thought I'd add to my comment. The book for the 14th ed is good and has more things. There are over 100 new photos, new things in every chapter even though its the same number of pages. Also sometimes they use the photos on tests so having the new edition might make a difference on that. So it possibly can matter which version of the book you buy sometimes. I do think for college text paying $100 book for every class is a little bit expensive for book.

This textbook was required reading for my college course, "Understanding Movies". It's an excellent, comprehensive survey of the many elements that combine to make up a movie and how to understand them all. It helped me develop a critical eye for story, movement, style, acting, sound, color, lighting, and composition. A wonderful source book for anyone who seriously wants to understand how cinema works as a communicative art form. Well written, sophisticated, challenging and thought-provoking, with great examples from a broad spectrum of movies. One of my all-time favorite textbooks.

It is the most expensive textbook for filmmaking class that I have had for two years in college. And I wouldn't say that it is as much informative as some books for my another classes (which cost in average $35 and downloadable unlimited amount of time).The book is Overpriced. Made for making money, not to teach.

I used an earlier version of this book when I took film class in college, and I am happy to see that it has kept its high scholastic standards. This is the perfect introduction to everything that is involved with making a film from writing, acting, and cinematography. It acquaints you with all the important industry terms and gives a voluminous amount of pictures to illustrate whatever concept is being discussed. The book itself is quite pricey, hence my less than perfect review of it. Because it is considered a "textbook," they publishers feel they can charge way too much for the book. So if price is an issue, get an earlier edition. There is very little change from one edition to the next, like most textbooks, but there is a significant amount of difference between several years, so don't go back too far. Otherwise, this is a top rate book.

This is an awesome book -- and that's saying something seeing as it's a text book. The pages are colorful and covered in great and interesting examples of movies that vary between all genres. I have learned so much reading this book and it hasn't been a dull experience. Everything you read is immediately applied and you will begin to notice that you analyze the movies you are watching according to what Giannetti has taught you.Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

This is a great book if you like movies. I have an edition several years old -- this updated one is really nice. After reading this book one sees movies with much more understanding of how effects are made . . . . Covers the history of movies pointing out innovations throughout the century plus of cinema, covers great directors and movies English and non-English . . .

This wasn't a terrible textbook, in fact it was quite informative and the pictures did a good job of illustrating concepts of film. The issue I had was that the information was often unorganized and lacked any logical flow. If this book was not required for my class, I probably would have never purchased it as a quick look through any chapter demonstrates my point. Even my instructor disliked this book and was in the process of persuading her department to switch to a better one she had found. I decided to keep the book because it is interesting and I already had it, but if you are in the market for a book on this subject, I recommend something else.

in her first book, madisen laid her claim in the world of modern poetry. with her second, she has set herself on a pedastal among the best of the best. she truly has a way with words that not many other poets of this time have. she writes with so much honesty, yet keeps it eloquent and sophisticated. her poems capture the raw, gritty emotions that people face with no filter. rather than an attractive, empty sentence, madisen knows how to string words together in such a way that the reader is left chewing and digesting, reading again and again to catch what they missed. her poems make you think, discover, and leave you breathless. this book is truly amazing and i recommend it to all who are interested. you will not be disappointed, and you will find a poem or twenty that resonate with you so much so that you plaster the words on your journal pages, and your heart, for future reference.

This is M.K.'s second book, and it is amazing to see how much she has grown; Both in her writing and personal experience. I have been following her since the tumblr days, and watching her fall more in love with her passion, poetry, self and C has felt like a fairytale. Madisen is one of my favorite authors on Earth. Her writing is so relatable and I would sit and read her grocery list if I could. After finishing Leigh Bardugoâ€™s epic series, The Grisha Trilogy, I was sad to see it come to an end because it was so engaging and beautifully written and I knew I would miss the Darkling. Now Bardugo has come out with another series set in the same world, same time as the Grisha but with a whole new set of characters. And you know what? I hate to say this, it might even be considered blasphemy, but I found myself more engaged, more fascinated, more intrigued, and utterly in love with these new characters. And the story? It has more twists and set backs and game changing moments than any book I have ever read. Itâ€™s intoxicating and fast-paced and you need to pay attention or youâ€™ll miss Bardugoâ€™s multiple sleight of hand tricks. Nothing is what it seems.The Grisha Trilogy had the Darkling; mysterious power-hungry megalomaniac that he was, all readers agreed the man was sexy. In this series, we get Kaz; greedy, dangerous, deceptive Bastard of the Barrel that he is, despite all his faults and one very weird but ultimately understandable phobia, the man is criminally sexy. Emphasis on criminal, by the way. Heâ€™s the guy you make eye contact with in a dive bar who makes you shiver, but you know that taking him home would be one huge, but memorable, mistake.Anyway, the story is all about the art of the con and is told from multiple viewpoints, which Bardugo expertly masters. Five con artists, led by Kaz, stand to make enough money to buy them out of whatever debt or indenture or brothel or sorry mess they call life if they pull off a most impossible heist. Keeping all the details of the plan close to his ever-present vest, Kaz hires a spy he calls The Wraith, a sharpshooter with a gambling problem, a Grisha Heartrender, a soldier who wants to kill the Grisha, and a rich kid with a penchant for explosives. Combining their various talents, they intend to break into the worldâ€™s most impenetrable prison and kidnap the scientist responsible for the dangerous drug that Iâ€™ll just refer to as â€œGrisha methâ€.If all the main characters in Six of Crows werenâ€™t teenagers, this would definitely read as adult fiction. I never regarded any of them on the same level as the pimply-faced immature high schoolers that run around in my house. All the characters have a hard luck story or monumental event that made them grow up fast. Throughout the book we learn their personal stories, some are incredibly sad and unfair. But, in the end, itâ€™s what made them who they are: interesting, resilient, criminal and ultimately dangerous. Heartbreakers that they are, I fell in love with all of them.A masterful storyteller and creative writer with a clever sense of humor, Bardugo is one of my favorite authors. As much as I adored The Grisha Trilogy, I absolutely love the dirty and gritty beauty of Six of Crows. And, I need to have the next book soon.

Why is it so hard to find good Adult Fantasy these days? I bought this book based on the amazing reviews, but I have to disagree with the other reviewers. I really thought that this book lacked so much. Instead of putting in the hard work of character development, the author just had all of the peripheral characters Tell you how to perceive one another. I can't tell you how many times I read "Kaz is so cold-hearted and ruthless, Kaz is so underhanded, Kaz is cruel and conniving."I felt like I was being brainwashed from hearing it over and over again Instead of actually gleaning any character traits from Kaz's behavior or dialogue. It's lazy writing to tell characterization instead of show it through skilled story writing.I think the author did a poor job of developing believable chemistry between the characters, and ultimately I did not care about the cast or the outcome of their journey. This book was described as Game of Thrones meets Ocean's Eleven in the blurb. It's kind of accurate in that the book is essentially a heist story in a fantasy setting. However it was definitely much more simplistic than the Game of Thrones series and also a YA novel. It definitely had it's fair share of violence though.Overall I enjoyed this book - I liked the world-building that Leigh Bardugo did and the magic had clear rules and limitations, which is a plus. The characters were all pretty memorable and distinct, especially the main character Kaz. There wasn't a super clear villain, but more like a system that the characters were fighting against. I thought the dialogue was good and the pacing/plot was pretty steady, although I never really got fully invested in the overall story.The narrative switched between different characters every chapter, and also alternated between current story events and flashbacks. Despite all the jumping around, the story was easy to follow and none of the character stories were boring.I did think it was weird that all of the main characters were 15-17 years old. I knew this was YA going in, but the characters' ages didn't really fit with their mannerisms and backstories. They hardly ever acted or spoke like teenagers, and a lot of them had backstories that involved prison sentences, gambling addiction, slavery, training as a soldier, tragic romances, etc. It just seemed like it would make more sense for the characters to be a little bit older, and I'm not sure what having them be so young added to the story besides making the book more appealing to teenagers?The other thing I really didn't like was that the book ended extremely abruptly. I knew this was part of a series, but it felt like there was absolutely no conclusion to the story. I turned the page after the end of a chapter and that was it! There are plenty of multi-book series that still manage to have a satisfying conclusion within each individual book.

I am disappointed -- reads like a "regular" camping guide retrofit for RV audience, but falls short in being useful for RV folks. RV information is buried within each description, in a paragraph. No useful icons to give 'at a glance' info about hook-ups, maximum length, etc. No information on whether sites are level. As this book heavily focuses on national and state parks, many sites are suitable only for dry camping with very small RVs -- no more than 16' - even our little 18' Lazy Daze would be too big. I am using this guide to supplement information I gain with online campground searches where I can filter for the amenities I need, as the descriptions of landscape, driving directions and reservation details are helpful in this book. Not sure whether newer editions are better organized.

I've got a few different RV travel books for the Western USA, and while they all generally contain the same type of information, the structure of the book and content can make all the difference in the world. The veritable "phone book" that is the Good Sam campsite/RV park directory is a staple for finding a place if you know the name or location, but to compare/contrast different campsites a more dynamic book is necessary.In my case, I wanted a book that could highlight all the campsites by region, along with a consistent format for amenities, restrictions, and specs for each site (including some subjective features such as scenery). This book absolutely meets the requirement. The write up for each camp site is laid out just like the one before, so it is possible to quickly scan the sites in a region to filter out those that (for instance) do not accomodate RVs any larger than 30 feet.A word of advice though: Tom's notation for maximum length of RV in any given site are not necessarily accurate--more of a recommendation as it turns out. I've found a few camp sites (run by US Forest Service or BLM) that will allow a significantly larger RV than what this book shows. I believe the book takes into account ease of access, turn arounds, road quality and convenience, which (in fairness) will limit the size of RV some folks will want to comfortably park in a campsite. So my recommendation is that if you find your perfect camp site/RV park in the book, call them or look them up online to see if your big rig will fit. Since this book has the phone and website listed for the location(if applicable), the homework's done for you!Overall, still the best book I've seen on the topic for folks who are looking to screen down the thousands of campsites out there for the one that's just right.

The pages are very thin, sort of like gift wrap tissue. There are a lot of important places that I would like to find but always seem to be in the fold of the page. For example Chino California isn't even on the map because it's in the fold of the pages and doesn't even recognize Highway 71. It seems like every time we wanted to go somewhere it was always in the fold of the pages and we couldn't locate that particular area.

The information in this guide is great. For us it could have been catorgized differently for easier use. What would have been nice is if they had used a slightly heavier weight of paper instead of using something in weight just above cheap toilet paper. By using a heavier weight notes could have been added better in this book. Any notation made would bleed into the other pages :O( Other than that the information like I said is great and helpful information!

Although Tom did try to pack a lot of information into this travel guide, I found this book of minimal use and when comparing it to other information available either online or through Good Sam it does not compare. Ratings of RV campsites is scenic view only, when there are so many other factors needed when making a choice on the road. Also, very little to no information on road systems, which really comes in handy when traveling the west coast, especially the PCH. I would not recommend this guide.

It's not a great book. Doesn't really give you mich on the RV sites and the ratings are only for scenic value.

We've used the previous edition of this a LOT, traveling around the west. Unlike others we've looked at or tried, it includes all the wonderful, little Forest Service, County, and so on camping spots. An invaluable, amazing source. Bought this new edition just to be up to date. It lives in our little RV.

I plan a lot of trips. This book is useful in all the right ways. The maps are exactly what you need to find what you are looking for. The descriptions are helpful in planning a trip that will suit your specific needs. The information that I found most useful was the "best of" guide in the front of the book, rates, allowable RV length, and the general description of the campground. That was particularly helpful in finding a place that would suit the age range of people that I was planning for.
