For my money, no other Mexican cookbook (printed in English) that I have seen beats Diana Kennedy's 'The Art of Mexican Cooking'. I closely peruse any and all that I find, which have been many. Kennedy is precise in her explanations, leading the reader through very flavorful and deeply authentic dishes that have always proven to be a success for me. Consequently, my guests and I are always thrilled with "Mex Night" at our place. Be advised that there are no fabulous color finished dish photos here designed to charm and seduce you into buying the author's book (see Bayless for that), but there are some useful black & white photos of some of the preparation steps. I have not found the lack of finished dish photos in this book to be problematic. Also, this is literally a cookbook, more an instruction of Mexican cooking technique and many great core recipes that make up the heart of the style. The creativity in how the elements are utilized and presented are left up to you. One should be prepared to spend some time in the kitchen for authentic Mexican cuisine. There's no escaping it. Although Kennedy also offers short cuts, good things from scratch often take time, more so when the ingredients are so humble as these. Apart from some of the salsas, these dishes will not "throw together" in 15 minutes (beginning to end), so I prep some parts one or two days before the meal. If you're into Mexican food on a regular basis, what works for me is to prepare "parts" regularly to keep in the fridge which can be thrown together in different ways to create various dishes at any time. I've cooked professionally for many years. That said, I previously (and ignorantly) dabbled in Mexican (Tex-Mex, really) food only at home, using no recipes for some time. Results were nothing to tell about. Then I bought Mad Coyote Joe's 'Gringo Guide to Mexican Cooking', a fun, short, starter book in the style and it got me hooked on the real flavors. But Joe's book offers only few recipes and I was needing more. Then there are the Rick Bayless books (if you need pictures - nothing wrong with that) which, while offering fancier, more "nouveau Mex" dishes, lacks the soul and depth that I feel with Kennedy's works, only because I feel that one must have knowledge of the origins, the root, soul & necessity of the style before one can fully comprehend and appreciate the direction & concept of newer interpretations. I completely read Bayless' 'Authentic Mexican' & found it to be OK, but I found that I needed to have Kennedy's 'Art of Mexican Cooking.' It has more. It's the real deal and it has become absolutely indispensable for me, currently in my top 10 of collection of cookbooks.

I was blessed to have been raised by a family of extraordinary Mexican cooks that had a broad knowledge of the best regional foods of Mexico, Yucatan, Oaxaca, Michoacan and now that I reside in the USA I miss not having access of such amazing food. Whenever I get the 'blues' for Mexican food I always grab this awesome book.For anyone from beginners to savvy connoisseurs of Mexican food, this book will provide an excellent reference of staple Mexican dishes. Diana Kennedy is the Julia Child of the Mexican Food scene and has many books. However, whenever I think of giving or recommending a book of Mexican food to someone, I always recommend this particular one. Happy Cooking!

Diana Kennedy is to Mexico for the English-speaking world as Julia Child is to France. Her mastery of Mexican cooking and the stories she tells brings out an anthropological touch to this text. The recipes are FANTASTIC, simple to follow, and well explained. I'm amazed at the number of dishes included, from well known favorites like carnitas and enchiladas to ones I'd never heard of before in my life, had no idea what they were supposed to turn out like, tried, and was delighted with the results! Highly recommend for any cooking fiend with a passion for cuisines from around the world.

I have tried several Mexican cookbooks. This is the only one I kept, and I use it frequently. She has all my favorites and many new things to try. The recipes are reliable, well written, sized appropriately, and very tasty.

Sources are provided throughout the book and thecomplete index helps you find the subject you wish to visit again quickly and easily.This is a very positive book filled with meaningful information that is sure to become a continual reference for dog and cat owners and will be appreciated by parents who want to provide good nutrition for themselves and their children.I cannot recommend it any more highly; a must have for your personal library.

Excellent book, and a much-needed addition to this field. It is clearly written, with heaps of information based on sound evidence and analysis of the latest research. There's so much opinion in the field of 'what you should feed your dog' and not enough unbiased, factual information has been available. Until now. The writers do an excellent job of laying out what is known and what the findings suggest, in an unbiased manner. I particularly appreciated the opportunity to check what I am doing now, and confirm where I was doing things right, as well as make notes about things that I will change, because I feed a home-based and primarily raw diet.Unlike too many others with extreme biases at either end of the spectrum (such as "you should only ever feed dogs a prey model diet! All commercial diets are poison! No, you should feed the best commercial cooked food! Raw will give your dogs diseases!" and so on) this book avoids the hysteria, and presents the facts and the evidence. A lot of what they have to say about many of the commercial kibble does not make for comfortable reading at all. But it does need to be known more widely.The best thing is that no matter what main diet you choose, they offer plenty of advice on what you can add/subtract/modify in order to offer your dog the best possible chance of good health, and explain why it matters and how it works. There is also much guidance on feeding for special conditions, including arthritis, diabetes or cancer.The only things that detracted a bit for me is that it is wholly USA based, so all brands mentioned are only those in the USA. Plus, I could have done with a bit less information on the lab test available, especially in a book. It felt a little bit like pushing one's own barrow and sat a bit uncomfortably for me - particularly since I'm in another far away country. But these gripes aside, brilliant book. One I'll reread several times, I suspect. I'm already recommending it to others and quoting bits.

Like many professional dog folks, I'm finding it near impossible to feed a kibble diet to my dogs anymore. Between unwanted additives, general poor quality and unreliable regulation of the industry, we all know it's not what it used to be. Home feeding is by far, superior but the difficulty is finding a program that is safe and balanced since most of us are not experts in nutrition. There is a lot of mis-information out there regarding raw and home-prepared diets and I've been taken astonished at some of the terrible books and 'recipes' I've read on the subject. This book is good though and from a trusted source who is a leader in the field of canine medicine. If you read my reviews, you will find several books that I believe are helpful and good. This one belongs in the library of anyone committed to home feeding. While it is not as helpful for specific recipes (see other reviews for those books), the general guidelines on optimizing and choosing beneficial food ingredients and what effect certain foods have on the body is good information found here.

Years ago I met Jean Dodds and her knowledge and love for our canines was so apparent. With all her years of research and to have this information in our hands today with the latest information possible is priceless. I have fed raw for years and have seen remarkable results. Some health issues just went away with just the food. Vet visits for my dogs are rare, thanks to good food. Now with this book I have the guidance to fine tune what I have been doing a bit more for my rescue girl and as I prepare for another dog coming into my life. I am excited. Thanks Jean and Diana for a fabulous job. I love the splashes of things in there for humans to wake up to their own health choices. This book deserves more than 5 stars!

we have yet to arrive in namibia; we ordered the bradt guide after reading numerous reviews of travellers in order to prepare for our trip. this will be our first trip to africa, and it's turned out to be quite difficult to plan and to understand just what is going on, what needs to be reserved in advance, what things really cost, and where we'll be happy going/staying. after our first thorough reading of the guide (as well as reading online forums) we were able to make our decisions about accommodation and vehicles, and now we're reading it again to plan the content of the days themselves! we were happy that so many reviewers recommended this guide since we have travelled with a bradt guide in albania and it was wonderfully helpful. i feel that only with a guide book can i get a real overview of a destination's travel potential and compare destinations within a country, something that online travel sites and forums provide only piecemeal - they're too specific for someone who as yet hasn't a clue.

I have bought earlier Guides in this series on Namibia ; Editions 2, 3, and now the 4th.Each is better than the one before with updated information. Edition # 4 is now my "bible" for Namibia. I rely on these guides completely and after FIVE trips thereI have yet to get a "bum steer" from these Bradt guides by Chris McIntyre.I recommend the guide highly for anyone traveling to Namibia

Bradt Namibia and Botswana were two of the best, most informative, incredibly useful guidebooks I've ever had to any country. On a self-drive, self-planned safari, the two of us alternating reading its chapters, sometimes out loud to each other, that were not just of great practical value, but also on the behavior and habitat of wild animals, as well as safety information for humans around them.

Africa needs to be "experienced" as well as read about, & this book helps you do it even before arrival...Have been to Africa 3X and have used various guide books. This is one of the best--great maps, well-organized, excellent color pictures. Good whether you are going on an organized tour (which we are doibng to Namibia) or doing it on your own (have done this 3 other times). Per all reports and pics, Namibia is a fantastic & underappreciated part of this continent.

Seems to be a good guide book providing up-to-date information on the country and getting around in the country. Will know more when we actually travel to Namibia.

I planned to travel to Namibia in 2012 but only got as far as South Africa. I looked through this book and could tell it will be helpful when I finally travel there.

As we have not been to Namibia before,we needed to do some pre-reading as well as have a guide to the cities and game parks while we are there.

This guide is a detailed and comprehensive review of Namibia as a tourist destination. I am only partially through it but already it is worthwhile reading. I had thought that the guide would have had more colour plates on some of the scenic spots and major attractions.In all the Bradt Namibia guide was a good purchase to prepare for a trip to the country.

I bought the book for a niece, whom I am helping to plan her destination wedding. This book offers great cost savings tips, along with some very creative ideas! Many of the ideas I have not seen in other books. I wish there was a book like this when I got married; it would have reduced many hours of planning time for me...

I like how the information is laid out. It provides a well-rounded outlook on what all goes into weddings and the things that you may have to deal with. It is a great source. I really like the creative wedding tips that are throughout the book.

Even though I don't have plans to have a wedding in the immediate future I found this book to be very helpful in terms of travel. The author gives a lot of research and resources for a variety of travel destinations and hidden travel gems. I've added more "must do" places to visit and experience on my bucket list.

I like that this follows the sequence of the Bible and reinforces Bible stories as well as applying it to our own life. I'm using it with my almost 6 year old and although the devotions are pretty simple and not all that"exciting" she enjoys the undivided attention. It's helped us to talk about issues we wouldn't normally discuss.

I bought this for my very active 3 year old son, wanting to start him out in a small act of worship daily. This is perfect for that, as the devotionals are short and to the point. They are all age appropriate and introduce Biblical ideas quickly and efficiently, building on each day's lesson. I do feel my son is learning the basics and a little more each day.

We read this every night as a daily devotional to my 4 year old Son. He is excited about reading it every night. It is a very age appropriate devotion.

I love this devotional. We use it with our kids and the lessons are short enough to deliver a simple lesson that they retain.
