Review

From the reviews of the first edition: "This book presents in great detail all the results one needs to prove the Morse homology theorem using classical techniques from algebraic topology and homotopy theory. … This book collects all these results together into a single reference with complete and detailed proofs. … With the stress on completeness and by its elementary approach to Morse homology, this book is suitable as a textbook for a graduate level course, or as a reference for working mathematicians and physicists." (Bulletin Bibliographique, Vol. 51 (1-2), 2005) "This book provides a treatment of finite-dimensional Morse theory and its associated chain complex, pitched at a level appropriate to early-stage graduate students. … Throughout, the authors take pains to make the material accessible, and … extensive references are provided. … Many well-drawn figures are provided to clarify the text, and there are over 200 exercises, with hints for some of them in the back. … Banyaga and Hurtubise’s book provides a valuable service by introducing young mathematicians to a circle of ideas … ." (Michael J. Usher, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2006 i) "This book is an exposition of the ‘classical’ approach to finite dimensional Morse homology. … This book presents in great detail all the results one needs to prove the Morse Homology theorem … . References to the literature are provided throughout the book … . A lot of examples, suggestive figures and diagrams in every chapter and many useful exercises at the end of the chapters makes this book a good and attractive textbook (as well as an excellent monograph). … The bibliography is exhaustive." (Ioan Pop, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1080, 2006)

Morse theory (the study of the critical points of a nondegenerate smooth function on a smooth manifold and in particular their topological implications) is a classic subject whose standard texts, Milnor's Morse Theory and Lectures on the h-Cobordism Theorem and Morse's Calculus of Variations in the Large, date from the '60s or earlier. Starting in the late '80s, due to the work of Floer and Witten, a new perspective emerged, both on the old finite-dimensional theory (Witten's rediscovery of Morse homology) and on infinite-dimensional Morse theory, initiated by Floer, which resembles gauge theory and has deep ties to symplectic geometry. This book by Banyaga and Hurtubise attempts to, first of all, present the classic finite-dimensional theory but in modern dynamical-systems terminology, and also give a brief introduction to the newer developments in Floer homology. It is more successful on accomplishing the former, as its treatment of Floer homology is rather cursory. It is largely self-contained, as an introductory graduate text, requiring only a knowledge of singular homology theory and basic topology and analysis. The book includes 2 chapters on prerequisite material, namely, CW homology and basic differential topology, but if you don't know these subjects already, in particular, the differential topology, this won't be enough to help you. All the standard results in Morse theory, as can be found in Milnor's books or Matsumoto's An Introduction to Morse Theory, are presented, although some of the proofs are given in more general form, such as Palais's proof of the fundamental Morse lemma, which also works on Banach spaces. There are many topics that have been collected from the literature, including the full set of Morse inequalities, such as the polynomial Morse inequalities, and Morse-Bott functions, which usually don't appear in other books on Morse theory. There's also an extensive treatment of dynamical systems, which are implicit in the Morse theory but not usually formally addressed, including a modestly analytically challenging proof of the stable/unstable manifold theorem, which forms the core of the book, as well the lambda-lemma, Kupka-Smale theorem, which shows the Morse-Smale gradient vector fields are generic, and the Conley index. The culmination of these technical results is the Morse homology theorem, which relates the CW homology (hence singular homology) of a compact smooth Riemannian manifold to the homology of a Morse-Smale-Witten chain complex, which is particularly easy to compute, only involving counting flow lines between critical points with signs coming from orientations and flow directions. The last 2 chapters are more specialized and can be omitted in a short course or on a first reading. There's one on the Morse theory of Grassmann manifolds by constructing perfect Morse-Bott functions on them. Here previous knowledge of Lie groups and algebras is necessary, although some of it is derived. A large part of the proof of the existence of such Mose-Bott functions is practically copied verbatim from Milnor's ("Morse Theory") proof that Morse functions are generic. The payoff in this chapter for so much effort is somewhat modest - it ends by only stating some similar results, such as the cohomology of the classification space for complex bundles and Morse theory for Lie groups, that should probably have been proved here. The last chapter and a half of the book is primarily concerned with applications to symplectic geometry, including Floer homology. A ton of material is summarized very quickly, often by just copying sections of several papers, in a manner that will not be of much help for beginners. The main point of this seems to be showing how Morse theory can be applied or extended, or even just showing THAT it can be applied. This is a textbook, so there is a wealth of exercises and a fair amount of examples. For most of the book, the proofs develop very slowly, with all of the steps explicitly spelled out, making them easy to follow. The emphasis on using modern dynamical systems terminology and theorems, the presentation of multiple proofs of the same theorem, practical demonstrations on how Morse homology can be computed, and the inclusion of more obscure results are also pluses, as is the proof of the Morse homology theorem, which differs from other proofs in that it doesn't involve infinite-dimensional techniques or require overly restrictive assumptions on the Morse function (such as it being self-indexing or compatible with a Riemann metric). It is unusual among books on Morse theory in that it is both modern (unlike Milnor, Morse, or Matsumoto) and classical (unlike Schwarz's Morse Homology or Chang's Infinite Dimensional Morse Theory). The main drawbacks of the book are that it doesn't do a good job of explaining or using the Floer theory and homology on Grassmann manifolds presented at the end of the book, a large amount of material seems to be copied from other sources, it takes a long time to arrive at the most interesting results (certainly longer than necessary), and there is a plethora of mathematical typos, much more than one normally finds (and the bibliography includes 2 of the most bizarre kinds of typos I've ever seen).

What a beautiful book.Nabeel Qureshi opens to us the beauty of a devout Muslim family, their whole lives ordered by their faith and their traditions. Their love for Allah and for one another is palpable in the pages of this book. It is a beautiful picture and one I am grateful to Nabeel for sharing. Then Nabeel takes us step by step through his search for truth; a search he begins with complete confidence that he will confirm the claims of Islam. For myself, I was reliving the search I had pursued forty five years ago, when my embrace of existentialism had left me so empty and purposeless that I had to reconsider the claims of Christ, just in case they might be true. I found myself anticipating each next step in Nabeel's intellectual journey, as each critical aspect of the truth of Christianity was substantiated by his investigations. I knew in advance what he would find and what he would conclude, because I had walked the same path and reached the same conclusion: the claims of Christ are confirmed by history, science, and reason, if you approach them objectively, seeking to know the truth, instead of seeking to prove your already-held beliefs. But I also knew the feeling Nabeel expressed at the end of his intellectual journey. A rational conclusion still leaves an unsatisfied heart. To conclude that history sports the claims of Christ is not the same thing as knowing Christ as Savior and Lord. And just like Nabeel, I asked God for a supernatural confirmation of my intellectual conclusions. And just like He had done for Nabeel, God condescended to grant my desire by specifically answering prayer requests that only God himself could provide. I even experienced to a degree Nabeel's family conflicts, though for me it was my mother's amazement and bitter disappointment with my choice after college of seminary instead of medical school. This is an utterly beautiful story of a devout Muslim's search to know Allah and his astonished discovery of Jesus. As I read Nabeel's description of his joy and relief as the beauty of Christ and Christ's love for him flooded his soul, my own eyes were filled with the same tears of joy and amazement.Read this book! And as you read it, may God grant you the joy of knowing Him and His salvation.

If after reading this book, you are thinking about which Muslims you can give this book to, you've missed a key point. Nabeel would never have trusted his friend David had he not been confident in knowing that David truly cared for him. What an eye and heart opening book for a self-described apologist that tends toward arguing people into the kingdom of God and has more of an Islamic enemy mindset ... that is until devouring this book in record time. I have a much more compassionate heart to the lost condition of Muslims and how to hopefully engage with a sincere heart knowing what they are captive too.Christians need to be more informed about their faith and deeply serious about it, since the average Muslim is more more so than most Christians. It is their very identity. Is our identity truly in Christ? This book will challenge you as it has me in mind, heart, and Spirit. Until just recently, I had never heard of Nabeel. The Internet was blowing up with postings and due to his associate with RZIM I wanted to know more about him. So thrilled that I got to know him through his powerful testimony and the incredible social sacrifices that he made in coming to the Lord Jesus.I wondered like so many why he was taken so young and this verse came to mind as a valid reason.Jn12:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit."Nabeel's life and legacy is now spreading rapidly and hopefully informing many Muslims and Christians alike. Thank you dear Brother now absent from the body and present with the Lord.

I began reading this biography with very little knowledge about Muslim customs and beliefs, but Nabeel Qureshi offers us a unique windows into his early life, being raised in a devout Muslim home. He gives us definitions and explanations along the way as he describes, in detail, the symbolism behind the expressions of their faith. Qureshi points out the similarities between Islam and Christianity, but more importantly he expounds on the differences – how the western world thinks differently from middle-easterners in the very core of their beliefs.I have noticed one common thread among those few who gave this book 1 star – their disbelief in the supernatural part of Qureshi’s conversion. He asked for, and received, a series of dreams from God that led Him to the truth of Scripture. (Read about it. It’s awesome.) He clearly explains that the dreams didn’t save him, but they did point him to God’s Word where he had an encounter with Jesus. I have absolutely no problem believing this, especially if we believe the Bible. To quote Father Louis Gilbert:“Two different Josephs in the Bible had what we might call ‘strange dreams’. One became Pharaoh’s right-hand-man as a result and the other became the husband of Mary and the earthly father of our Lord Jesus. Something they ate, was it? I think not.”

RIP Nabeel Qureshi (1983-2017): thank you for your courageous testimony, your wonderful books, and for a life well lived. You have left us too soon. Well done good and faithful servant.

Seventeen Contradictions and the End of Capitalism

Review

"The book is a refreshing attempt to innovate Marxist theory, to move beyond the tired dogmatisms and deadend scholasticism that have plagued it for too long and construct a richer, more open theoretical approach...Likewise, it is an important book for activists seeking to craft a politics that, while moving beyond the limitations of spontaneity and structurelessness, can finally transcend the old question of l"reform or revolution," and test the possibilities for reform and revolution through the practical reconstitution of a socialist political alternative for the 21st century left." --Stephen Maher, lScience & Society

This is a fundamental book to understand the many contradictions of the capitalist system. Prof. Harvey goes to the heart of the matter when he shows that capitalismo cannot provides for the future of humanity since it is based on the exploitation of human labor. In reality, modern capitalism is a remake of older exploitation systems such as slavery, using technology and science to hide the fact that it extracts labor from most people in the world without giving the minimum return other than subsistence (this when a job is available). I recommend reading each one of the seventeen facets of the problem as exposed so brilliantly in this book.

This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand that Marxism, Communist revolutionary theory, practice and analysis are still alive in the US and the "modern" world -- contrary to all the celebratory op ed pieces from the Wall Street news services and American pundits. To understand what is going wrong with the US, no matter how much money the government throws away each year on a combination of ill conceived, aggressive, war based foreign policies and failed hand out, paternalistic, even parasitic and costly medical and public "welfare:" programs domestically -- one must understand the inherent contradictions that exist inherently in the capitalist political economic system and the culture it fosters or, rather, festers in a futile attempt to cover up the blemishes, wrinkles and sores like some bad make-up company late night TV advertising campaign. The emporer has no clothes, new or old, and the contradictions are well identified, described, and analyzed by Harvey in this updated critique of monopoly imperialist capitalism, the modern update of Lenin's Imperialism the Highest Stage of Capitalism, and a well done and timely update to Das Kapital in the 21st Century and new Neolliberal assault against humanity and plans to destroy Marxist practice and organization, and, especially the socialist governments with Communist Party leadership in the world today -- like was true in various ways in Cuba and the embargos, the new Cold War with Russia, the Obama "Pivot to Asia" which is really the "Return to Asia of the Victim of the Vietnam War Criminal US Government and War Machine", the interference in EU affairs and rebuilding a nuclear NATO,. the invasions in the Middle East and total destruction of Iraq, Libya, Yemen and now Syria all against International Law, etc. All of that arises out of these contradictions, and the American Capitalist led onslaught under the banners of "Free Trade," "Democracy through regime change," "Globalization," "Open Borders," and "One World Economic Order under the US as Super Power" -- focused and drilled down on, one contradiction at a time, by Harvey, as the banner carrier of Marxism in the US today, and the foster child of Lenin and the contemporary embodiment of Mao and his On Contradiction, all the revolutionary prodigies of Marx and Engels. Right on, Comrade David.

It is a very informative and interesting book. If you wish to know the problems facing the world today, it is an excellent choice. However, it is a little lacking in recommendations and the title suggesting the end of capitalism in general may be exagerated. It does, however, point out a relatively recent development in economics and politics called "the claiming of the commons". Other books such as "The end of money and the future of civilization" by Thomas H. Greco, Jr. can provide further enlightement on the latter.

'The Seventeen Contradictions and the End of Capitalism' has to be one of the most prophetic books since 'The Limits to Growth.' Employing a Marxist perspective, the author, Dr. David Harvey looks at capitalism systematically in an attempt to discover how crises such as the recession of 2008 originate. He goes on to expose the contradictions at the heart of capitalism. In doing so he has discovered that instead of facing its crises head on, capitalism moves them around.Summarizing, Dr. Harvey breaks the 17 contradictions down into 3 categories which include seven foundation contradictions, seven moving contradictions, and three dangerous contradictions. Even though he categorizes the contradictions in order to analyze them better, he cautions us readers to view the contradictions as interlinked with each other, illustrating how an analysis of capitalism needs to employ a systematic perspective.Beginning with an analysis of the ingredients that led to the recession, Dr. Harvey discourses on use value, exchange value, their impact on housing, and how speculation in the exchange value of housing led to a crises that almost rocked capitalism at its foundations. Continuing with an analysis of the other foundation contradictions he discusses capital and labor, private property, and production. His category of 'moving contradictions' include social trends, cycles, and geographic moves. For example, if a company moves its factory to Mexico in order to capitalize on cheaper labor this is considered a moving contradiction. Technological changes, automation and its displacement of labor, changes in wealth disparity, and uneven geographic development were also considered to be 'moving contradictions.'The three dangerous contradictions included endless compound growth, the commodification of nature, and the alienation of labor. Compound growth could be the most fatal for capitalism. Compound growth was illustrated by analogy with an ancient tale from India. In the tale a king asks the inventor of chess what he would like as a prize. The inventor answered that he merely wanted one grain of rice to be doubled on each square of the chessboard. The king agreed to grant the inventor his wish until he found out that by the 41st square all the rice in the world would not be enough. Mr. Harvey continues by stating, “Without expansion there can be no capital. A zero-growth capitalist economy is a logical and exclusionary contradiction. It simply cannot exist.” Yet in a world of finite resources capital cannot continue to grow at its current rate.Dr. Harvey leaves his readers with a sense of dis-ease because he makes a strong case for the possibility of capital imploding upon itself. Capital works most effectively when money and resources circulate. When wealth becomes concentrated as trends show it is now doing, the demand for goods fall. Even though productivity may continue or increase, without demand the goods that are produced end up not being sold. Capitalism has so far been able to circumvent this potential problem by finding new markets or extending credit.Dr. Harvey's solutions are radical and include the restoration of the commons. He doesn't go so far as to prophesize the end of capitalism. Yet, if capitalism is to survive the future the dystopian society that he predicts would result is truly horrific to the imagination. I found this quote particularly pertinent in conjunction with this theme, 'the issue is not, therefore, that capitalism cannot survive its contradictions but that the cost of doing so becomes unnacceptable to the mass of the population,' delineating two clear choices, a future like that of the movie 'Elysium' or an alternate 'post capitalist' future that has the interests of the mass of humanity at heart.Even though I am not an economist, I found Mr. Harvey's analysis revealing and insightful. There were points in my reading where I felt he lost his objectivity in his need for eloquence. However, I felt he made a very compelling case. If his argument is valid, the implications are both disturbing and disillusioning; disturbing because he paints a picture of a future in which the mass of humanity is alienated from themselves and nature if we continue taking the direction we are headed. Disillusioning because we may be unwilling to make the changes necessary for an alternative future. Anyone concerned with where society is headed needs to read this book. It makes a compelling case for change and re-assessing the journey that we are on.

A well presented, reasonable critique of capitalism. Whatever your dogma regarding western economics, David Harvey knocks that kool-aid right out of your hands! The first section is a must-read for anyone seeking an honest evaluation of capitalism - which is built on a series of dualities. Harvey calls them contradictions, and in a strict sense that is true, but he really refers to the positive and negative aspects of things like money. His explanation of the difference between use value and market value is especially good.

My 4 year old loves The Magic School Bus and the Joanna Cole books are my favorite because they are the most informative and easiest to follow (and the best to read out loud to a preschooler with a short attention span). This book was great but unfortunately, ours came with a weak binding and the pages started to come out the first time I opened it. Half the pages were loose by the time we got through the first read. I have to figure out a way to re-bind the book so we could read it again.

Once upon a time I was a beekeeper and had a library of beekeeping books. Of all the books, this was the most informative. Although this book series is written with children in mind, I bought these by the box and gave them away as presents to to parents and grandparents so they could read to their kids about the life of bees, honey, and their contributions to civilization. Well-written with lots of excellent color illustrations, "Inside a Beehive" is a good, fun read that children love.If you could only have one book on bees, this would be the one.

I like using with my pediatric patients for reading material during short waits in the med room. Simple enough to be easily understood, accurate enough to be helpful. Gotta Love Magic School Bus!

This Magic School Bus book is one of those that has a main text that introduces ideas and side notes that amplifies them in detail. The result is sort of interactive- you can regulate the level of complexity that you want to present to your kids. They're not all like this- some MSBs are overly simple and lacking in detail.

My kids loved this book! We heard from a beekeeper how accurate this book is and to keep my kiddos entertained while learning is the best in my opinion.

I grew up with Magic School Bus. It was my favorite when I was kid. Our daughter is really into science so I have been collecting more and more. I really want to teach our daughter about bees at an early age. They are so important and I think that needs to be taught very early since they are in decline.I was very impressed with this book, lots of information and it kept her attention.

5 year old enjoyed for Christmas present.

I love it! The busy pages are a bit difficult for my student to figure out how to read in an organized way, too much going on. These books are classics!!

The back of the book was incredibly helpful. It tells you what the meter is for every poem along with some notes on some of the more difficult forms. It also contains a section reviewing all the important people you find in the poems. All in all it was a great book, although not something I'd recommend for beginners. Definitely an intermediate level book. The book takes for granted you've probably had a year of Latin or so and so you should already know the forms. There is a glossary but not all the words are there. A dictionary would be worth investing in.

Excellent student addition. Explanatory notes are very helpful. I would recommend this to any of my Latin students reading Catullus for the first time. It is a wonderful introductory reader. N.B. this text is appropriate for an intermediate student of Latin. It is not an English translation nor a book for beginning students.

I have only words of praise for this edition of Catullus, which contains the complete poems in Latin, as well as extensive commentary on all of them (and perceptive commentary, at that). There are also several appendices and an broad historical introduction. Further, I actually appreciate (unlike some reviewers) that Garrison has offered his own 'title' to each poem. It offers the reader a preview to the poems content, and makes it more exciting to translate (and thereby discover why Garrison so titled the poem).

Catullus is one of the greatest of the Roman poets, it's why we still have his poems around to translate and work with. The simi-dictionary in the back of the book certainly helps, and as always the commentary could use a little work.

"The Student's Catullus" is not only a great introduction to Catullus, but it is also just a fun book. Some reviewers have criticized this book as simplistic (i.e. not a critical text, useless for scholarship, etc). This edition was clearly not produced for scholarly purposes (you need not look beyond the title, duh!).Among other things, Catullus wrote these poems to be enjoyed, and this edition should be used precisely for that. The concise dictionary in the back removes the burden/necessity of toting around a second book; the brief notes on each poem's meter are useful (come on, admit it, you don't know all the polymetrics); the tidbits of information on each poem are wonderful. This book is just pure fun. If you want to enjoy reading Latin and remove yourself from the scholarly confines of crusty, dusty library stacks, then pick up this book, go to your local bar (or coffee shop...you fuddy-duddy), and start reading!

Complete, in latin, text of the poet Catullus's poems. If only the glossary was just a little bit longer.

Garrison does a great job with this book. As a beginning Latin poetry student, I found his notes very useful.

a good book

About the Author

Born a mile from the tracks of the Stockton-to-Darlington Railway (the first in the world), Marc has a natural affinity with ribbons of steel. He's been riding the ex-USSR's rails since the late-1990s when a trip from Kiev to Crimea took him through the endless sunflower fields of Ukraine. Thousands of miles later, Marc still loves the ceremony of Russian Railways - buying food for the trip, the provodnitsa who shakes you awake in the morning - and keeps returning for more. Marc has updated and authored several Ukraine and Russia-related titles. When not competing for oxygen with fellow platskart passengers or sleeping off 3am starts in station dorms, he can usually be found in Sandwich, Kent, where he lives with his Kievite wife, Tanya.

For someone who has not been to Germany, especially Munich and Bavaria, this book is quite informative. It tells you about customs, places to see, restaurants, hotels to use and much more. I have been to Germany many times and I even found information I didn't know.

I used this while I was in Germany and it was extremely useful and accurate. The tips on packing and paying in cash came in very helpful. In the US, I use my credit card for everything but Germany is very different.

Good guidebook for Bavaria, or more exactly, southern Germany. Good guidebook, but as all other Lonely Planet guides, somewhat short on photos.

Followed the books recomendations and traveled all over Bavaria!

As with most Lonely Planet guides, this one did not disappoint. From possible itineraries to the history of Munich and the Black Forest, this travel title provides many options for a visitor to choose from. I also like how the series now incorporates the use of more color now. As far as I am concerned, an app or an eBook still can't substitute for the ability to thumb through and mark the pages of a printed travel guide.

Book has great in depth side trips and lots of info; should make a great companion to the Frommer's I bought, which was for Germany as a whole, but this Lonely Planet will be a fantastic supplement to where we're going in Germany: BAVARIA!
