"Arc of Empire" is really several books in one. At its core is a survey of the four wars America fought in Asia in the 20th century: the Philippines (against insurgents), World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Unlike many military histories, the authors don't just tell the U.S. side of the story, but also consider the political goals and homefront attitudes of America's enemies. Better yet, the book analyzes these wars within the context of America's century-long attempt to fashion an Asian political order hospitable to U.S. interests and amenable to U.S. domination. Finally, the book is a polemic against the ignorance and hubris of American neo-colonialism, pouring scorn on Washington's habit of supporting dictators and wreaking destruction on alien peoples whenever it suits U.S. strategic goals (all in the name of "democracy" and "uplift"). Up to three million people died during the U.S. phase of Vietnam's war for independence. Only 55,000 of them were American GIs. Americans still mourn their loss, but it was tiny compared to the holocaust inflicted on the Vietnamese. How many Americans cry for them?While "Arc of Empire" doesn't break new historiographic ground, it is filled with wise reflections on America's role in Asia. I have only two real complaints: First, by framing its analysis around these four wars, the book neglects America's relations with other important Asian countries (such as Nationalist China, Indonesia, and Thailand). Second, although the authors define what they mean by "empire" very carefully, I'm unconvinced that it's a useful concept for understanding America's war against Japan or even the Korean War. Those conflicts seem unlike the Vietnam War and the counter-insurgency in the Philippines. Nevertheless, "Arc of Empire" is a fabulous book. Highly recommended.

Two really solid academics combine their skills to discuss the US's long history of warfare in Asia. It's a must read as the Obama administration "pivot" to Asia.

i would rate this book as average; not too much to distinguish it from some other political histories i have read; i thought it worthwhile but not an outstanding book by any means

Book is excellent,BUT THE BINDING HAS ALREADY BROKEN!!!!! Very good text. (I am self studying the material) I hope never to buy from this publisher again. I had to remove the binding and staple each chapter so the book could be read.

It was easier to gather the concepts by reading original peer-reviewed articles than trying to get it from this textbook. The style is confusing and the graphs are not well explained. One might find it palatable if one has a background in economics but for those to whom the subject is new, this textbook definitely not a good starting point. And chapter 3 is a joke: its title "statistical tools for health economics" promises an explanation of econometric statistics but instead delivers a shallow introduction to basic statistical concepts. If you have taken statistics before, you will find the chapter poor. I wonder how I would have found the rest, had I taken economics before.

Chapters are each about 20 pages long. Well explained, just enough detail. Not overly simplified nor overly complicated. Chapter summaries helpful; and questions for deeper exploration into topics if desired.

The book was in excellent condition, I expected it to be dog earred and it was not which makes me want to return it in the same condition.

I liked the book It has some very interesting insights about Health Economics, but some Chapters I feel its only a literature review without adding more than a few remarks by the authors.

Excellent resource that explores quite a bit of the ArcGIS Pro programâ€™s functionality. Current with latest release of software.

I'm an ArcMap user and needed to learn ArcGIS Pro in two weeks for an interview. I grabbed two workbooks, and I found this workbook to be fun to use because it follows a large scale project through the whole process while showing me how I should go about planning a large scale GIS project.*** Project includes finding vacant locations around the LA River that could be turned into parks, given specific parameters. I was very pleased with my order. The cookbook is great and with lots of photos inside (as all cookbook should have!!). However, I was a little disappointed that the photo of Paul and Prue that the listing shows is only a half book sleeve and not really the front of the the book. The book itself is solid blue with the shown white text.

My daughter and I have tried several of the recipes with excellent results. The presentation of the recipes is such that one is motivated to give things a go. Nice to see photographs of Manon, who was unjustly robbed of a place in the finals. Bake on bakers!

Great to see the behind the scenes... and interesting new recipes adapted for mere mortals.

This is her favorite cooking baking show - it was a perfect gift. Hardcover, lots of pics and detailed recipes.

This cookbook is wonderful - full of photos and detailed instructions on how to bake many delicious recipes from the show! It has been fun to watch the show and look for the corresponding recipes in the book and see how the contestants are faring in the competition - especially when it comes to the technical challenges and they have sparse instructions. While I am not under a time limit at home like in the show, this book really does give you an appreciation for how difficult baking can be, and how, with practice, everyone can make delicious treats.I look forward to working my way through the book to become a better baker and bring the joy of home cooking to my friends and family!

I love to bake. Was reborn in Germany. Have German ancestry,so it wasnâ€™t just â€šgermanâ€˜ food, it was European food. I love the recipesthat fill out my personal cookbook from my Omi.I love the fact that I was able to download it to Kindle.

This is a great book for someone stuck in a photographic rutâ€¦ The 300+ exercises are all different and designed to challenge you creatively. One of the things I really enjoyed is that net every assignment involves a camera. Several of the exercises are writing or drawing based. While they wonâ€™t directly improve your camera skills, they will stretch your creative muscles in interesting ways.Other good things about the book:Every exercise comes from an artist â€“ this contributes heavily to the variety of content.The artists featured provide valuable input and insight â€“ they donâ€™t just rattle off something to go doThe exercises are meant to be done one off â€“ one is not dependent on anotherYou will learn as much about the craft of photography as you will improve your photographic skillsThe only improvement (IMO) is that the exercises could have been organized by topic. Instead, the table of contents is ordered alphabetically by artist last name. Great if you are looking for someone specific, but not as helpful if you are looking to flex a particular creative muscle.If this review was helpful to you, please click the "yes" button below - it helps Amazon (and those of us who write reviews) know if the information provided is of value to others.

This is not going to be of help for most commercial photographers...I've noticed the lowest reviews are by folks who are looking to improve technical skills. I can imagine this to be a great resource for any photographer feeling stuck creatively (or those who need a good laugh). Some of my friends/photo heroes have been generous and thoughtful enough to share their successful assignments or strategies to get out of a foto-funk. So far in browsing, I already read 3 great entries that I would have NEVER thought of, even after a decade of teaching. Great collection, thanks JF and GH!

Scanning this book and using small memo stickers for pages I want to come back to when I get to the last assignment.They are some wonderful ideas and you can't help but come up with many more as you read them. There is plenty of space to add notes as I have as you go along.If your willing to put in the time the ideas within will keep you busy.

Every page of the 300+ assignments by leading photographers can lead to successful, original, exciting photographs, even when one expects to only take a few snaps. A superb resource for photographers, whether professional or amateur.

After a quick reading to get a feel for all the tips, projects, and insights. I am making that list of ones that I will tackle in the next week, month, and year. What a gift! Great curation of experienced photographers, and educators in the visual arts. If you can't find something to shoot after having this book in your hands... you might be totally creatively dead!!!

This is one of my all time favorites books. It's not a book for photographers anymore. Not with you having a camera on your phone all the time, it is not.It's a book for creatives and people who want and look for something to stir those juices on a daily basis. Open it up and make each of your day a bit more out of the ordinary.

I was in a rut photography wise and picked this up on a whim. Wow, so many great stories, assignments and opinions of photography and learning it. Some of the assignments are going to be hard to pull off if you're not in college but most are that people of any age can do. I've read it a few times; front to back, randomly and by topic. Every time I pick it up gives me some great ideas and inspiration for my next roll of film.

This book has changed my view on what I am doing whenever I pick up my camera. There are many viewpoints inside this and not all of them are great but some of them instantly gave me a gut punch. After 9 years of photographing the world around me Id have to say this is the most important book I have picked up and I have only had it in my hands for like 6 hours.
