Carr's books were classics, butr I had outgrown them. I have many antenna boojs from ARRL and RSGB, so I ordered this expecting this to be a bit elementary. When I flipped through it on arrival, it seems to confirm my expectations. But I kept it by the throne, and as I read various sections, I started to appreciate the book for several significant features. First the update reorganizes the material so the flow is from basic to advanced. Second, the writing is very good; this means that technical points are much easier to understand. Third, as I read through sections, it made me excited by new projects. I am now planning to create a simple dipole to listen to Jupiter on 19 Mhz - I never imagined it might be feasible to create a radio telescope so easily.I continue to find fascinating ideas, now look forward to my daily ablutions, which have become signficiant input sessions. Very highly recommended.

Carr's Practical Antenna Handbook is a thick volume that tries - mostly successfully - to balance technical detail against practicality. I can follow the book without any issue, but do find it heavy going in a few places. I've found it mostly useful when looking for details and insight into one particular antenna type. While I find antennas interesting, like most amateur radio operators, aside from the introductory material and the coverage of dipoles, which everyone should read, the idea of reading the book in linear fashion cover-to-cover is daunting, besides unnecessary.This handbook is also a good alternative to the ARRL Antenna book at roughly half the price of the latter. The printed version is better quality than the ARRL book. I bought the Kindle version and am entirely happy with it (including the price, responding to one complaint).

This is a book that I am happy to call a member of my collection of antenna books. The book first of all is *readable* not being either a compendium of example antennas others have created that may or may not work, nor is it a book full of old antenna information the foundation for which might date back 80 years and be suspect. It is an up to date treatment of different types of antennas, some theory justifying them, and is exquisitely well-illustrated. Included as well are sections on modern antenna modeling as well as modern means of troubleshooting antenna systems. The book's author is a renowned expert in amateur radio operating and antenna systems. He has always been willing to help others achieve a better understanding of their stations and operation. In short the author's background is perfect to write a Practical Antenna Handbook - someone who knows the theory, practices it avidly and uses his antenna system in frequent operation. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in antennas, regardless of prior background.

This is so much better than the ARRL Antenna Book (which this same author has also been involved with over the years). At half the price. Joseph Carr is very well known name in Amateur Radio, and greatly missed too. He is/was probably the best there is at taking difficult topics and parsing them down and making them accessible to the general reader, without dumbing it down to the point of uselessness. Everything in this book is useful, and as the title touts, Practical.This book starts with some basic concepts and gradually build them up until the reader is working with some very deep aspects of RF transmission and propagation. It is comprehensive without being overwhelming. I would also recommend any of Mr Carr's other books dealing with radio electronics.

Kindle version - I'm barely up to chapter 2 on this book, On chapter one there is a link to a McGrawHill web site for additional resources that leads to a non existing page. Does anybody know were is the correct page? Other than that IS quite clear so far, no high level mathematics or dense theory. I bought this book because I just bought a Zenith Trans-Oceanic radio and want to install an Antenna in my house that does justice to the radio, nothing more. I'll let you know latter if the book was helpful for that.

Everything you need to know about any antenna, matching network or any other topic associated with antennas is directly located in the chapter you are reading. You do not have to search for anything...it is there! Filled with proven, workable antenna examples, it is a joy to read. Enthusiastically written, it is extremely concise, and accurate on every topic imaginable. The actual examples presented in this book will make you want to try them all. Finally a reference manual on the â€œhow toâ€, and why the antenna you are planning to design will be incredible! It is the best Antenna Handbook ever!

I picked this up because I had a passing in interest in getting my HAM license. This was very helpful illustrating the basics. It goes far beyond what you need for the HAM license. The book has sparked a greater interest and I will likely keep studying just because I am intrigued by the variation in the different types of antennas. So, in this respect the book was a very good stepping stone to more technical aspects of the design.

My co-worker has an earlier edition. I have used his book for years with great satisfaction. Decided to get my own. New edition is even better!This book is a good intermediate level book for people who have a working knowledge of RF and antennas. As the title indicates, it is a "Practial" handbook. I recommend it as such.

Thank God I purchased this cookbook! I always love trying new recipes and sometimes I come across bad and good cookbooks. I think this cookbook is one of the good ones I have come across. Even without enough recipe images I was still able to follow the recipe guides. Also the Instant Pot recipes I have tried so far tasted great! Thanks to James Zimmerman!

I have, at various times, tried to read four different editions of War & Peace (Penguin, Signet, Barnes & Noble, and now this) and by far, this is the best edition I've seen. This edition is everything I was looking for in a copy of War & Peace and I cannot recommend it highly enough.Pros:It is highly readable. Translating texts is always difficult, because you want to retain the feel of reading a Nineteenth century work but use language that makes the work accessible. Personally, I found some editions (Barnes & Noble, Penguin) to be hard to read and comprehend, especially when you first begin. This edition is a relative breeze to read.It has French translations. When reading the Signet edition, I found myself using google translate to understand sentences or phrases left in the book in French. Other editions translated most of the French but left phrases here and there untranslated and in the text, without footnotes. I understand in the original, Tolstoy wrote entire passages in French but provided translations in the foot notes. This edition follows that pattern. There are entire passages in French, but they are translated in the footnotes on the page.It has historical end-notes and an index. I am not unfamiliar with European and Russian history, but I, like most people, have no more knowledge than what I learned in my freshman world history class. This work has end notes in the text to provide context. Though it slows me down, I find myself flipping to the back of the book and reading every end note when the text provides it. I cannot stress enough how helpful this has been. The index is likewise helpful. It is an alphabetical list and short biography of the historical characters and places mentioned in War and Peace.It includes a short chapter summary. At the very end of the book, there is a chapter summary for a collection of chapters sharing a theme or describing the same event. The summary is no more than a sentence long and provides a nice refresher when you are trying to recall what happened when.Cons:Compared to editions that translate all the French, reading in the footnotes can be burdensome. I personally don't mind, but I can see how that might trip some people up.If you are looking for a copy of War and Peace, this is the one to get. Trust me.

It is unlikely that anyone who has the endurance to finish this book would give it a poor review. That would still be true, however, if it were one-third the length. It is, if not the best novel ever written, certainly on a very short list of great works of literature.The beauty of the prose, for me, is the fact that Tolstoy speaks through subtlety. His powers of description are beyond comparison, and in fact there is relatively little dialogue given the length of the book. But the focus of his descriptive powers is not the scenery or the landscape, as is often the case, but the gesture, the look on the face, the social context of the event. This is a subtlety that is lost in our dialogue-heavy, action-packed world today, and is almost foreign to most contemporary authors.Which, in part, also explains why War and Peace seems inapproachable to many contemporary readers. Many of us have lost touch with subtlety and if you are one of those, reading this book would be the greatest gift you can give yourself in the months ahead.â€œHelene was so good-looking that there was not only not a trace of coquetry to be seen in her, but, on the contrary, it was as if she was embarrassed by her unquestionable and all too strongly and triumphantly effective beauty. It was as if she wished but was unable to diminish the effect of her beauty.â€ When was the last time you read such a descriptive passage that used so few descriptive adjectives?One of the common criticisms of the book is that the characters often speak in French, which is retained in this translation. This is more true in the beginning, however, and, in total, the French represents a small portion of the total prose. And translation is provided, although the electronic version requires a certain amount of digital (as in fingers) dexterity that I donâ€™t seem to have.Tolstoy, however, is sensitive to the inconvenience and I canâ€™t recall a single passage in which the French was central to either the theme or the storyline. It is mostly there for context, so even if you pass over the short phrases you will miss little other than the full experience that Tolstoy intended. Those readers looking for a book solely about apocalyptic films will only be partially satisfied by this intelligent, incisive book. While it does delve into the ways apocalypse is presented in American films, covering quite a few of them, it's more an examination of American culture itself & its fascination with destruction. Nor does the author restrict himself to images & fantasies, which he demonstrates are both fed by a consumerist culture while helping to create & maintain that same culture. He goes more deeply, examining the power of the almighty dollar in creating increasingly shallow but visually spectacular films that have immediate visceral appeal, much as a roller coaster does, while avoiding any food for thought afterwards. These films aren't designed to make the viewer think, but simply to feel -- as intensely & vividly & shallowly as possible. In their pursuit of pure sensation, they approach a kind of emotional pornography of immediate gratification: raw, exhilarating, and constantly lowering the lowest common denominator. This, the author suggests, is indicative of our consumerist culture as a whole.Further, he shows how this seething rush of garish, giddy trauma affects political & social discourse -- or more precisely, how it short-circuits rational discourse in favor of an easily manipulated blaze of jittery emotion in need of a focus, a target, a scapegoat. And of course there are more than enough groups ready & eager to provide that focus, in order to serve their own financial & political purposes. One of the artistic prices of this approach, of course, is the death of film as potential art & its replacement as nothing but commodity. He even delves into the physical replacement of film by digital technology, and how that adds to both the profit margin & the fear margin.While this is fascinating material for any thoughtful reader, let me hasten to add that the author never succumbs to convoluted jargon. He has the knack of handling complexity in an accessible manner, never dumbing it down, always making it quite clear & succinct. Considering the spate of jingoistic films we've been getting from Hollywood lately, this is vital reading for anyone concerned about the political & military excesses of the post 9/11 world. Highly recommended!

I always found it fascinating how American audiences (and film makers) love the cinematic spectacles of self destruction. From the great San Francisco to the discreet On the Beach all the way to the more recent Deep Impact (Special Collector's Edition),The Day After Tomorrow (Two-Disc All-Access Collector's Edition),Cloverfield [Theatrical Release] and I Am Legend (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition) (not forgetting the once-controversial The Day After, naturally).I, for example, freely admit that I love those films. And I love them perhaps because of my personal taste for (among many other things) the radically different premise they put in front of us: the vision of a world you dot see every day. And more important: it's not for real... no strings attached.And if we decide to focus our study just on that angle alone, I am sure we can identify many trends going on today. And they all represent big meals for those who care to dine. They would all make great subjects for serious study.That was exactly what I was expecting when I bought this great book.Mr. Dixon has a great knowledge of films, meaning that he is an experienced viewer... and he backs everything he says with the right data and the actual numbers. I will not try to summarize the book... but basically, what he offers is a long and valid (but somehow debatable - that's what I think) reflection on how the Hollywood film industry in particular (and all the other cultural industries in general) function today AND they way they drive (and shape) its audience towards certain... let's say "tastes".And Mr Dixon does that very well.The big major flaw, in my modest opinion, is that... from page one all the way to the end, Mr Dixon's very precise analysis left a bitter taste of prejudice and discrimination under my tongue against commercial Cinema. Maybe that's because I myself teach Film Production (and work in that area) and therefore (maybe), have a different view on the matter. What I feel is that Mr. Dixon violently criticizes an Industry (and a system of things) he clearly dislikes without taking some time and distance to see a bigger, broader picture.And that analysis make up for 90% of the book. It IS a great analysis... but it comes from someone who seems to have picked just one side. I agree with him on most everything. But I miss the other side. I believe the things Mr. Dixon criticizes have their own reason of existing. They do fill some void. He and I may not like them (it may not be our personal taste). But we have to understand why they are there.Sometimes, the great scholar becomes a (I wish I wouldn't have to use the word) snob critic when he starts throwing adjectives like "awful" to films that are much more than JUST that. At a certain point, several films and people get classified upon adjectives and terms that seems prejudicial. I'm not saying one cannot express his own feelings. But hardly that easily in the middle of such a great analysis.I was expecting a different book... specially because the analysis of today's big self destruction spectacles was not fully accomplished.BUT I still strongly recommend this book because (even after all I've pointed) Mr. Dixon DOES give us an astounding job. Really. It's a great book. His reflections on 9/11, its media coverage and the impact it had on American Cinema is top notch. His views on War Cinema are quite excellent.Again: a great book.

The title of this book is misleading. The author discusses the Cold War (including films of the Cold War period), the contemporary threat of terrorism, the decline of the film industry and U.S. society in general, contemporary politics, and dozens of films that have nothing to do with the apocalyptic genre. However, he barely discusses what he title proclaims, "visions of the apocalypse / spectacles of destruction in American cinema," and he discusses no recent apocalyptic films whatsoever. I wonder if the title was chosen just to make the book sell better.

Iâ€™ll definitely read both asap!Miles is a MMA fighter who joins Body Armor, a bodyguard agency, heâ€™s actually happy working there until his new client is someone he knowsâ€¦ intimately. Maxi enjoyed a few night stands with him, disappeared from his life and now sheâ€™s at Body Armorâ€™s office trying to hire him. But then when she starts to explain why she needs protection, Mileâ€™s protection, all of his instincts are roaring to protect her at any cost. And besidesâ€¦ Maxi has been on his mind a lot.Maxi is a sweetheart, she never quite fit with her family, never had much luck in love and she feels like she never measured up to her momâ€™s expectations. Sheâ€™s such a sweetheart! Sheâ€™s trying so hard to honor the trust her grandmother put on her, itâ€™s absolutely endearing.Miles and Maxi are incredibly perfect for each other and I fell in love with both of them. I loved this book! Ms. Foster hooks the reader right from the first sentence. The mystery starts off on the first page, and the humor follows later. I found the story quite a lot of fun.The heroine finds it hard to trust. She has learned that she is not infallible and has trusted the wrong people before, so she decides the solution is not to trust anyone ever again. In Ms. Fosterâ€™s mind, that is a terrible place to be. Without trust we canâ€™t have love and without love the world is a dark place. So a couple of times Maxi tries to just use Miles for his body without trusting him. He is a beautiful man but also has a beautiful character, so she knows that if she lets him he could really become important to her. She doesnâ€™t want to trust him. When bad things start happening to her and she has to trust someone, though, she goes straight for Miles. She hopes hiring him through the Body Armor firm will provide an insulating barrier and protect her.This is another in Ms. Fosterâ€™s Body Armor series. It is an interesting idea, to make a security company with a division of good-looking guys from which to select, not just plain guys in suits and earpieces. Anyway, as all the books in the series do, this book stands alone although it is delightful to meet â€œold friendsâ€ from the other books.I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader copy of this book.

The Body Armour series just keeps getting better. Justice and Leese and now Miles. All of these MMA fighters on top of Cannon, Armie, Denver and Stack just gets more delicious!Maxi and Miles have palpable chemistry and anyone near them feels the sexual sparks radiating off them. They have a history, short but quite memorable, I assure you!Their story is complete with intrigue, mishaps, gunshots and explosions. It's also even more swoon worthy with all of the MMA fighters in one place...with their shirts off, sweating with hard labor.Miles will protect her, even when she's pushing him away. It's his job but it's also more. So much more. Maxi may need his protection but she's got a backbone of steel. She has moments where she weakens under the pressure of all that is going on, and those moments are when he can show her more of what they have, what they can be. She's pushing him away for his own protection and he's having no part of that! when they succumb it's beautiful, passionate and hot!The "whodunnit" I had narrowed down to two but the how of it all surprised me and was a great hero/heroine moment!And the taste of Sahara and Brand was like fine chocolate, sweet but now we need more! their story is likely to be the best! keep them coming because I love them all!

Beautiful cover but small images inside. The other book, with the green cover, is by far the best option in my opinion. This is like a fairytale book.

This is the most current overview of Karen Kilimnik's paintings and covers up to 2007. There are very few books on Kilimnik so this is pretty much your only choice to see some of her more recent works. There was another hardcover collection that covered 1992-2000. This new book improves over the 1992-2000 survey book by providing slightly larger reproductions. However they are still small and that is the main downfall of this book. The paper, color and book production are all fine but the small format doesn't help show off the paintings. The 1992-2000 was even worse because it (somehow) had even small reproductions. This new book is around 9x7 inches which for an art book is somewhat small. Since I think most people buy these type of monographs for the pictures, at least that's the case for me, I give it a thumbs down.

This book comes with a deep purple velvet cover and gold leaf on the edge of the pages with a lovely fabric page marker. Everything about it is simultaneously precious and slightly dark and distrubing--like all of Kilimnik's work. The paintings included run the gamut from installation views of some of more elaborate full gallery installations to details of her more idiosyncratic paintings of dogs and cats and her time tripping paintings of supermodels as boleshivik revolutionaries and great paintings of english manor homes that all look alike yet have been rendered distinct by her in depth knowledge of celebrity scandals and thus sport titles like redlands, keith richards' home...and is dated to just twice once to refer to the raid on the house that left marianne faithfull the subject of decades worth of rumors and also gave the world the richard hamilton painting of mick jagger in hand cuffs...that is part of kilimnik's sensibility to take mundane images and give them loaded titles then let the viewer run through infinite numbers of associations. and in the end one never knows if she's being a crushed out fan or a putting on a sly ironic act . her work is captivating, sentimental and far too underappreciated for its complexity. this book also includes a 4 page hand scrawled artist statement about her influences, her love of animals and the way she bends reality to create her own minidramas in her work proving that her images are never just what you see but part of some larger narrative that combines pop culture, rocco influences, a fascination with czarist russia as well as fairies, witches and bad supernatural horror flicks from the 70s. a beautiful treasure of a book for a modest price. the purple crushed velvet cover is in itself priceless.
