The Bible is a beautiful collection of assorted types of literature but it's organization and foreignness often creates confusion. So scholars claim we live in the most biblically illiterate time in modern history. While many have theological and doctrinal opinions and views few understand the book called the Bible. 30 Days to Understanding the Bible by Max Anders is exactly the sort of "idiot proof" guide many people are looking for. Anders' uses a simple format that explains how the bible is assembled and how each parts fits within or connects to the rest of the parts. The majority of the book covers the Old Testament (due to its size) and lays out a simplistic easy to follow and retain story. Every element is broken down into smaller digestible elements which are repeated and tested throughout the chapter.For instance:The Old Testament is divided into it's parts.17 Historical Books5 Poetical Books17 Prophetical Books The historical books are divided into smaller eras (ie Creation, Patriarchs, Exodus, etc). Every era is linked to a picture, a central character, a geographic location, and a story line summary. The story line summaries are one liners that sum up what that era is about. The reader is able to learn piece by piece each book of the Bible as he or she explores the eras. The reader is given pictures, maps, and subdivisons that aid in understanding the bigger picture of scripture and it's events. Each chapter contains simple tests right after new information is given and the tests are repeated becoming slightly more difficult as you go in the short chapters. This creates a stair step approach to learning that build new info onto slight older info. The chapters are short and can be done for about 20 minutes once a day for 30 days.The books covers the OT, NT, and the 10 Great Doctrines of the Bible. I'd highly recommend this to someone who doesn't understand the Old Testament, how the bible is constructed, bais doctrine, new believers, older believers looking to brush up, or anyone interested in making sense of the Bible. It's a fun hearted book and simple enough for a 10 year old but never so simple an adult couldn't glean something from it. It's a great resource for churches, small groups, or missional communities. It's denominational friendly as it is generic enough to work in a variety of churches. Lot's of free teaching material is available for free online as well.I've personally studied the Bible most of my life and I found this book to be the best I've ever seen. I'm thinking about completing this once a year. The book is also a workbook with fill in the blank questions, maps, etc. It feels a little elementary at first but I've noticed that my bible reading has benefited from a more clear understanding of chronology and geography. I've also learned several small facts here or there that filled in gaps in my own understanding after all these years. I'm excited about this resource and would definitely recommend it.

Never out of date - Best Basic Bible over view (Historical periods) I've read so far.Max E Anders ( original version used his initial) lets you MEAnder through the Bible by breaking it down into 12 Historical periods of around 400 years each.He presents each period as a simple name, with a simple statement and a single historical figure to allow you to build up a skeleton over view of the Bible.Each period has four sub sections ( e.g. Genesis, = Creation , The Fall, The Flood, The Tower) with a single sentence describing it. He also places each period in its physical location to help anchor the overview geographically.Why buy this book?- An over view of the Bible helps you understand the big picture stuff so the small parts of the bible make more sense.- Knowing that the Hebrew people started from a single family, grew to a kingdom and then got conquered, banished and then returned lets you see God's hand through 4-6 thousand years of history.- Knowing where in the history of the Bible events occurred helps you understand more. for example, too many Christians read Bible verses in isolation without understanding the context. Jesus lamb of god makes no sense without knowing there was a temple, a law given and the fall of creation separating us from God.This book has been a foundational influence in my understanding of the Bible - building a frame work to hang other learning on. There are other ways to do a Bible over view ( law and forgiveness, prophetic words over time, blessings and curses through history etc) but a general historical overview is one of the most crucial foundations you can put in place as a Christian.I first read this book 20 plus years ago and still mentally refer to it. My kids have used it and the structure has formed the basis for teaching others.If you want pretty pictures, florid prose or hand holding this book isn't for you. It is to the point, sparse and requires you to interact - filling in study notes etc - but it is plain to read, down to earth and simple to follow.The book version better than Kindle - which has a horrible layout. I need to flick back and forwards to compare nad review - the Kindle didn't cut it. buy the book version - you wont regret the extra $ spent.

My small group has been working through this book for the past few weeks and it's such a good resource. It explains major themes, people, and geography in the Bible in a way that makes sense for someone who has never picked up a Bible before or has been studying it for years. Would definitely recommend!

Purchased this in preparation for a Bible Study at our local church. In the past week, I have leaned more about the Old Testament than I have in my whole life! The Bible is broken down into eras, assigned a main character, given a location , then follows with a summary statement. Each chapter repeats and builds. Perfect! NowI have a framework on which to build further study!

This book was very helpful to me in organizing the old testament and figuring out how to read the actual bible more effectively. The only thing about this book that I didn't quite like was that the work sheets were very repetitive and so I stopped filling them in after a few chapters. That being said, the repetition does make the information stick better in my memory. I would recommend this book to those people who are just starting to read the bible with no historical knowledge of it. This book will help you understand what you are reading. However, if you are familiar with many of the books of the bible, this introduction will probably be a little too simplified for you.

This is the best book I've ever found for explaining the overall themes of the Bible. I taught this class in my church and everyone loved it. I have purchased many copies of 30 Days to Understanding the BIble over the years. I love giving them to new believers or people who don't really get what the Bible is about. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

There are two distinct editions of this book with identical covers being sold. The "Look Inside" feature on Amazon is the 2006 edition which contains commentaries by Kasser, Erhman, Wurst, and Meyer. The copy currently being shipped has a copyright date of 2007 and does not contain these essays. Rather, it contains studies in French. Amazon needs to look into this because it is not selling what it is being shown to customers. The 2007 edition is still a very well-made book with beautiful color reproductions of the original codex accompanied by English translations. I'm attaching the Table of Contents from the 2007 edition that may be compared to the Table of Contents on the "Look Inside" feature.

Thorough commentary, hi-resolution color photographs of the manuscript on the facing pages across from the transcription and translation and critical apparatus, a very reasonable price as critical editions go, a very handsome and well-made volume. How could I not be delighted? Of course, the title of the volume, "the Gospel of Judas," refers to only one of four works plus fragments on the manuscript here, but I imagine that serious scholars will have noticed this, and understood the marketing logic behind the title, and sighed and rolled their eyes and muttered, "C'est la vie!"

I like how they presented the information with the actual pages being translated opposite the English language translation. They used modern English terms and grammar. Very readable!

If you want to delve deeper into Christian history and belief, then this is the book for you. Written so that a layperson can read and understand, it is an amazing collection that adds depth and richness to Christian belief.

For the price of this book, the information was extremely limited. I expected much more of the actual Gospel of Judas although I did feel the information in the Revelation of James to be the most interesting.

This book is everything it's cracked up to be. It's good either for the scholar or the casual reader. Those who wish to read the entire extant manuscript will find it here. This is the best form of preservation for this rare manuscripts What is missing, however, is commentary about the contents of the text itself. The author apparently decided that all readers would be familiar with the meanings of obscure terms like aeons as they are used in the context this work. Whatever the reason for that presumption, I will need to look elsewhere for an explanation that should have been provided. However, otherwise this text is excellent.

As would be expected with a literal translation it is dry reading and I think padded by having entire sections only in French, which unfortunately I don't understand, and I really don't understand if it's being sold in America why Nat Geo would make it that way, but no matter, the part that counts, the literal translation is interesting so thumbs up to that.

This is the marriage book I needed right now. Rather than tell me how I can change my marriage, this book talks about changing my heart. Too many marriage books assume that both spouses are going to participate in reading and enacting the steps given in the book; this is all about how my relationship with God is imaged and expressed through my marriage relationship. I feel the author "gets it". There are no easy steps, no how-to-fix this, just a heart-to-heart talk about what marriage is really about. This is a breath of fresh air in a crowded and stuffy room full of advice and "answers".

This book has left me speechless. Considering how the world views marriage, especially in America, it's easy to get swept up into assuming marriage is all about you and romance and the surface stuff. This book gives you Heavens perspective on marriage. It will challenge you, but give you context for the challenges. Where things that I've endured in my life have seemed pointless and have left me questioning, this book punctuates all that you'll face in your marriage so that it makes sense spiritually and naturally. It gives you the wisdom, understanding, grace and strength that you'll need to press on through the rough times. It gives meaning and purpose to the obstacles that the enemy will use to try and destroy what God has called together. Gary Thomas nailed it! God bless this man for allowing God to use him to speak into the lives of so many married and soon to be married couples. I will read and reread this book for the rest of my life!

I always tell people that besides the Bible this is the best book I have ever read. Completely life altering for me. It changes the way you view your marriage and your parenting. We have a problem in our culture because Christians view their marriages as an institution designed to make them happy and when they are aren't happy they try to find a way out. But for the Christian life isn't about being happy all the time (and if you live your life that way you are going to be greatly disappointed in not just marriage but anything). So Gary poses this powerful question... What if my marriageis designed to make me holy more than to make me happy?

Gary's teaching on marriage is one of the best out there. Almost every other writer makes similar points but Gary was one of the first in our time to talk about it. I like Kellers book and Driscoll is ok. In the end, this is our go to for couples and pre-marriage. Sacred search is another great book for pre-marriage. But this is a DVD......So having a DVD series on the topic was a great idea. Now I will say Gary is not the most engaging teacher. He can be a little dry. He has some humor in it but his teaching style can be a challenge for some. If your a leader you understand that even with rest material, presentation can make or break a groups ability to engage. So just be aware your not getting a lively presenter. Just a guy, sitting in a chair in front of a window in what looks like his home. Its well filmed and produced and the content is good. Now all that being said don't get the idea its a huge bore. Just saying if your used to a guy like Jimmy Evans or even a Mark Gungor you might be disappointed

This gives some different perspectives to marriage that ALL should read. Yes, what if God did design marriage to make us holy rather than happy? We did this book/DVD as a group and everyone was so refreshed to read and talk about godly ideas that are often overlooked in marriage counseling. Often the counseling is about communication ideas and such. This is a must-read for all.

Too often we enter marriage with the fairy tale idea and weÂ will "live happily ever after". But then, the first big fight comes along and we decide that we are incompatible. When the truth is this fight is only exposing our own bent toward selfishness. If we open our hearts a bit, we can learn the lesson and improve our image of God and subsequently have an improved marriage.BEWAREThis book can cause a personal heart change followed by a great marriage. This book is good but it just didn't seem to keep my interest up throughout the book. But then again, I'm not an avid reader either. It did make you stop and examine yourself and your motives in your marriage. It also made you thing about how God views marriage vs how today's society looks at it and has cheapened its meaning to "what's in it for me." Overall it was a good book.

I started this book, and admittedly have not finished it (hopefully someday I will). Having only become a Christian recently and not really having a background where I'm familiar with scripture, this was a little bit too scripture-ally based for my tastes. I did enjoy it, but it just wasn't one of those books that you "just can't put down." Unfortunately I put it down and haven't picked it back up.

If you like your stories thrat make you think, get you to blink back tears, and would like to be struck by vivid prose, then you wonâ€™t be disappointed. A little about ghosts, but mostly about friendships and what it means to be your motherâ€™s daughter. I wish this book existed when I was a teen.

I've heard people occasionally describe a book as delicious, and it always makes me laugh because I don't usually equate stories with that form of consumption. But this book! This is a sumptuous read, a banquet of warm, dark breezes and mysterious spaces, interesting characters and fraught relationships so delicately woven in and revealed. I don't reread a lot of books, but this one I most definitely will.

Beautiful, dark and melancholyâ€”Nova Ren Suma has an uncanny ability to write difficult characters in all their stunning, scarred, poetic selves. Bravo!

This is such an odd book and itâ€™s hard to review without giving away the secrets. Binaâ€™s mom makes her leave her home. She says itâ€™s just for a month with friends, but Bina has another idea. She remembers stories her mom told her about a boarding house in New York. Her mom lived there while auditioning to be an actress. Her stories of freedom and having her own room appealed to Bina. After leaving her father, Binaâ€™s mom met a man right away and moved in with him. He also had two daughters and Bina didnâ€™t get along with them. There were lies and fights. Bina had enough and left after getting beat up at a party.When she arrived at The Catherine House, there was a girl that Bina was drawn to. Monet was different and she told stories like Bina did. There were rules in the house including a strict curfew and no men upstairs. The house started to almost feel alive. Catherineâ€™s ghost was there and the girls were determined to get her to speak to them. They believed Bina was the key. When away close to curfew, Bina could feel the house pulling her back. She didnâ€™t see anyone prepare her food. And the girls started talking to her like she should know more than she did.Things were odd and I could figure out that this was a ghost story. But I wasnâ€™t sure who or what was real. Parts of the story were a bit slow paced, but there were other parts that I didnâ€™t want to put down. I couldnâ€™t wait to get to the ending to figure out if I was right on anything that I thought.I gave this book 4 stars for a beautifully written ghost story. I loved the setting of The Catherine House.Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy for review.

I am such a fan of Nova Ren Sumaâ€™s writing. Itâ€™s always gorgeous and perpetually confusing and I just LOVE it.A Room Away From the Wolves is honestly no different. This story follows Bina, short for Sabina, who suddenly finds herself kicked out of her own home (temporarily). And itâ€™s nothing new â€“ when she was little, she and her mother ran away and began their own hitchhiking journey. Eighteen years ago, Binaâ€™s mother had taken refuge at Catherine House. Now, Bina returns, but she finds that there are things about the house â€“ and about her mother â€“ that she never knew.Nova Ren Sumaâ€™s writing style has consistently been one of my favorites, especially when it comes to magical realism type stories â€“ she does a great job balancing concrete and abstract language, which is even more powerful because I found myself questioning it all â€“ Is it real? Is it in the characterâ€™s head?The plot is magical, and Iâ€™ve finished reading the book, true. But Iâ€™m still confused, and in a good way. This is one of those books youâ€™d want to reread immediately after, because you hope that maybe the second time around, youâ€™ll get more answers. A Room Away From the Wolves filled me with the best kind of trepidation.Bina is an extremely flawed main character, and thatâ€™s good because itâ€™s more realistic, and yet because of that I found myself frustrated at her actions, while still symp/empathizing with her. There were definitely other characters that I wanted to know more about and wanted to see more of, but this book does leave room for lots of imagination.Other than that, I would recommend this book to readers of magical realism and fantasy â€“ itâ€™s got a mysterious vibe to it while simultaneously being able to juggle a setting in the contemporary world.

Analects, in case you were wondering, are "selected passages from the writings of an author.â€ I mention this definition here because it seems that the only time we use the term â€œanalectsâ€ is when we consider the writings of Confucius. Was there once a larger corpus of writings from Confucius, and is what we have today distilled from some larger body of work? If so, then I wish we had that entire larger body of philosophical work, the same way we have a good many books from classical Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle; but that being said, I certainly am glad that we have the Analects as a distillation of Confuciusâ€™ philosophy.His Chinese name was Kâ€™ung Fu-tzu, å”å¤«å, and the Latinate name that he bears today was probably bestowed by Jesuit missionaries to China in the 16th century. By any name, however, Confucius is a great philosopher who speaks to us today just as clearly as he spoke to the people of Chinese antiquity. He lived a long time ago â€“ when he died in 479 B.C., the Spartan defense of Thermopylae had taken place just one year before â€“ but it is astonishing how current and relevant his words and ideas remain.â€œAnalectsâ€ is, of course, a Latin- and Greek-derived term; in Chinese, the book is è«–èªž,the "Lun YÃ¼." It is divided into 20 books, and contains a total of 512 Confucian sayings, most of them quite short. On this re-reading of "The Analects," I encountered some sayings that were already familiar to me: e.g., â€œTo say you know when you know, and to say you do not when you do not, that is knowledgeâ€ (II.17, p. 65). Yet on this reading, I learned many things that I found new.Perhaps because Iâ€™ve been reading a good deal of classical Greek philosophy lately, I found some striking parallels between Confucius and the Greeks who wrote sometime after him. For instance, when â€œThe Master said, â€˜Barbarian tribes with their rulers are inferior to Chinese states without themâ€™â€ (III.5, p. 67), it made me think of how the ancient Greeks considered any non-Greek-speaking society to be Î²Î¬ÏÎ²Î±ÏÎ¿Î¹, barbaroi, barbarians. I found myself thinking of the doomed tragic heroes of ancient Greek drama, men and women brought down by their tragic flaws, when I heard Confucius reflect that â€œIn his errors a man is true to type. Observe the errors and you will know the manâ€ (IV.7, p. 73).Confucius knows that his disciples aspire to government service in the bureaucracy of the Empire â€“ hence the prevalence of sayings in which Columbus offers advice such as, â€œDo not worry because you have no official position. Worry about your qualifications. Do not worry because no one appreciates your abilities. Seek to be worthy of appreciationâ€ (IV.14, p. 74),Additionally, in an acutely status-conscious society, Confuciusâ€™ listeners are very interested in what will help them achieve the distinction of â€œgentleman.â€ With considerable focus on the value of benevolence, Confucius suggests that â€œThe gentleman understands what is moral. The small man understands what is profitableâ€ (IV.16, p. 74). And in one of my favorite passages from the Analects, Confucius remarks that â€œthe gentleman hates to dwell downstream for it is there that all that is sordid in the Empire finds its wayâ€ (XIX.20, p. 155).Readers who are interested in the Judeo-Christian philosophical and moral tradition may be struck by the ways in which Confucius disagrees with one of the primary moral imperatives of Christianity. In contrast with Lao Tzu, who in the "Tao Te Ching" tells his disciples to â€œdo good to him who has done you an injuryâ€, Confucius says, â€œWhat, then, do you repay a good turn with? You repay an injury with straightness, but you repay a good turn with a good turnâ€ (XIV.34, p. 129). In other words, the only thing you owe to someone who has wronged you is straightness, directness, honesty. For Western readers, many of whom have been raised in the tradition of â€œwhosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other alsoâ€ (Matthew 5:39), this may be the most challenging passage in the entire "Analects."At the same time, Confucianism invokes the Golden Rule in a way similar to all the other great moral, philosophical, and religious systems of the world. In response to a discipleâ€™s asking, â€œIs there a single word which can be a guide to conduct throughout oneâ€™s life?â€, Confucius replies, â€œDo not impose on others what you yourself do not desireâ€ (XV.24, p. 135).Perhaps because it is the dawn of a presidential election year here in the United States of America, I found that I was particularly interested in one particular example of Confuciusâ€™ advice to his disciples: â€œBe sure to go carefully into the case of the man who is disliked by the multitude. Be sure to go carefully into the case of the man who is liked by the multitudeâ€ (XV.28, p. 136). Good advice in the state of Lu during the Zhou dynasty, and good advice in any modern nation nowadays.I had this edition of "The Analects" with me when my wife and I were traveling in Beijing, home of the second largest Confucian temple in the world. Walking in the Forbidden City, my copy of "The Analects" in my jacket pocket, I wondered how many readers, imperial or otherwise, referred to their own copy of this book while traveling between and among the buildings of this most impressive city-within-a-city.This edition of "The Analects" includes a glossary of names and places mentioned in the book, an appendix on events in the life of Confucius, a textual history of the book, and a chronology of Confuciusâ€™ life. Particularly helpful is another appendix, one that describes the characters of the different disciples with whom Confucius speaks in the Analects. For readers of Confuciusâ€™ time, and indeed for followers of Confucianism nowadays, the differences in character among disciples like Tzu-kung, Tzu-lu, and Yen YÃ¼an would be as self-evident as the differences in personality that Christians see among Saint Peter, Saint John, and Saint Thomas in the New Testament. This Penguin Books edition of Confuciusâ€™ "Analects" is a very fine way to acquaint, or reacquaint, oneself with one of the most important books ever written.

I own the Oxford World's Classics edition translated by Raymond Dawson.This was my first reading of 'The Analects' and while it was not quite what I expected, as it does not contain a truly coherent philosophy or even a consistent mode of presentation or authorship, it was nevertheless an incredibly rewarding study. And I say study rather than read because while it is quite brief (82 pages) there are a wealth of "chapters" that will leave you pondering--in a good way! If you are worried about the stereotype of vaguess and aloofness in Chinese sages, you needn't fear 'The Analects'. The main thing that can obscure some of the "chapters" is their reliance on Chinese history and most of these are briefly cleared up in Dawon's notes. 'The Analects' can be picked up and put down at a whim due to the informal structure and you will never feel that you lost the flow of it should a few days pass between readings.While I can't compare it to another translation or the Chinese, I found Dawson's translation to be very smooth and highly consistent throughout, and he supplements the introduction with helpful notes on his translation of key terms. This is an edition primarily for the newcomer rather than the scholar (not to say it is in anyway "dumbed down") as it is wonderfully concise in its introduction and notes, never saying more than needs to be said. However, in my case, I certainly wouldn't have minded more scholarship and context. Dawson uses Pinyin rather than Wade-Giles, which is a welcome shift in my eyes, as Wade-Giles often feels overwrought even if it sometimes comes closer to the true pronunciation, and there is a nifty conversion chart included in this edition.This edition like all of the newer Oxford World's Classics is neatly designed with a beautiful cover and good quality paper.

Many images were cut into half because of the book format. Also, there are fewer than 10% of the shots that are truly edgy. The art direction did not even try to show some real emotion of the models. The book felt flat after going through each image.
