Although I am not in the cognitive field and not at all linguist - but on computer science with some interest and knowledge on NLP -, I must say that I have been particularly impressed by the content of this book. What a change for me with some of my readings on knowledge related to ontologies, inferences, etc., and other ugly stuffs, where those readings give the feeling that AI related to words is enormously difficult for tiny results.Here, the theory and related methodology is very well explained; and limits are clearly highlighted by the author. And above all: the given examples - which are often subtle examples of the natural language - fit so well with the approach !I understand that this book is not the 1st one where the author unveils his theory on conceptual space but rather the last production of a number of works which have been previously published. Yet, this reads easily with no strong particular knowledge and is a self-sufficient volume. As a bad minor point, figures look old-fashioned, but you should not pass your way for this reason.See his conclusion on semantic web (= "this is not the way to go").

This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. I'm somewhat interested in film studies but more so interested in race and I found this analysis of the melodramatic depictions of race across the mediums of stage, film, and trials to be very enlightening. One of the greatest things about Linda Williams is that she does not condemn or overpraise. She analyzes everything dialectically. While one might abhor, for instance, blackface minstrelsy that denigrated African Americans, Linda Williams makes the point that it was first through blackface that whites gained a sense of the humanity of blacks, all the while making fun of them.The style of the book is readable. Linda Williams is an intellectual but she manages to make her work accessible to those who have not studied film academically. Familiarity with the concept of modernism would help with the first chapter, but is not necessary. If you have studied Morrison, Fanon, Nietzsche, Benjamin and the other thinkers Linda Williams makes brief references to, you will probably get a richer understanding of this book. However, speaking for someone who is only moderately familiar with those intellectuals, I nevertheless gained a deep understanding of the book. Linda Williams is a very competent writer.

Needed this for a class on race and diversity. Interesting, extremely poignant, even more so now than when I took the class.

This is Film Studies of the first order. Williams takes the idea of melodrama as a mode and intersects it with issues of race and its representation. According to her, in conjuction with the popularity or in the legitimization of a particular medium in American society, the representations of the black male and female bodies take on center stage and gain new significations. The book starts out with Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and shows how it stays and strays away from the conventions of the Victorian novel. It then focuses on the Stowe's characterization of the black bodies and how they elicited the sympathy of the readers. Next, it shows how Dixon, with his novel "The Clansmen,' either changes or reverses Stowe's characterizations and themes to elicit another kind of response. However, it is D.W. Griffith's adaptation of the novel, "Birth of the Nation" that had a powerful influence in the society's imagination. Not only did the film legitimize the medium as an art form, it also gave the public a new way of understanding race relations in America. The book covers both the novel and the movie adaptation of "Gone With the Wind" and other cultural texts and ends with the televised trial of O.J. Simpson while keeping on the other eye issues of representation. Linda Williams' project is both multi-disciplinary and multi-media and she weaves them together in a rich study of melodrama as a cultural mode and the ever evolving nature of race relations and representations in our society. She wittily uses Henry James' imagery of the 'leaping fish' to show how melodrama dynamically moves from one medium to the next. Each time it makes an appearance in a big way, it also entails a recasting of black and white or racial representations. Williams achievement lies in her ability to pull together a variety of texts and approaches to engage upon the central issue of race. And she does this in clear, well-written prose. Although this is more like a work of cultural criticism, the book also opens up the possibilities of film studies as a powerful lens or a way of approaching cinema-related queries and dealing with socio-historical matters.

When we saw this latest addition, we jumped at the chance to check it out.What I love about Kawaii Doodle Cuties is it teaches the user about different things you would find from all around the world. Each picture lists the name and what country it is specific to. The categories include Adorable Food, Precious Nature & Natural Wonders, Enchanting Arcitecture & Monuments, Lovable Animsls & Birds, Charming Transportation, Fetching Fashion and Everyday Cute. Each tutorial gives step-by-step visuals as well as a description on what part to draw next. It’s super easy to follow and understand. The categories end with additional images to help you get inspired to doodle on your own. The last few pages include some super cute Search-&- Find Puzzles.This would be a wonderful book to have on hand if you are studying geography or if you just have an artist who loves to draw. It would make a fantastic gift!! We will definitely purchase a copy of our own.

This was a pretty solid how-to book for artists of any skill level. I had my kids of various ages try some of the techniques and I tried them as well. I'm horrible at art but even I improved some. To be honest, it even entertained me just looking at the cuteness. My youngest loves all things kawaii and art so it was a perfect way for her to spend some time. This is definitely something I would buy as a gift for others. I purchased this workbook from Silver Ocean, and it arrived quickly and in near-perfect condition, in my opinion exceeding the quality listed in the seller's description. The workbook itself offers exercises that expand upon the self-tests in the textbook, and I find it very useful in practicing new material. However, I have not been able to find the answers, and so the workbook is of limited usefulness to me, especially for the price. I would highly recommend the seller, but until I find the answers, I cannot highly recommend the workbook itself. Buy it if you need more practice than the self-tests in the textbook offer.

this was ordered for a college class but it did not match what the description that was given...so we had to order the correct one from the college and now I'm stuck with a book that I can't use

This is an excellent workbook, but it needs to be used with the textbook for Tonal Harmony. Neither the text or the workbook are low priced but these are very comprehensive books. The reader should know something about music or have an instructor.

You can't go wrong with this as a Music Theory aid. It was a required purchase for a class I took, but contained elements that allowed me to grasp the complex elements of Theory without much trouble. A great study aid, and great practice material.

You're probably getting this for a class, but it's honestly a really great, well written, easy to understand text. One big type is in chapter four, maybe you'll notice it XD

Reading about, reflecting on, and incorporating the views explained by the Dalai Lama in this book, has left me in utter amazement and humbled realization of things which I never could have considered on my own, but very much find are easily becoming part of every facet of my life. The Dalai Lama's wisdom and personal experience are tangible in the pages and are extremely helpful in explaining the more difficult concepts presented. It is a privilege to have access to such profound understanding and guidance from a master. This is NOT a leisurely read and, as it has proven so for me, probably requires lots of continual review. It is so worth it and gets better each time!If you are looking for a book that:(1) Explains emptiness.(2) Annihilates the the typical perceptions and conceptions of how we ( wrongly and unknowingly) view the world, ourselves, and others.(3) Leaves you feeling totally in awe, connected to the world and universe.(4) Carefully and in detail shows you how to see yourself as you really are and, in doing so, leaves little or no room for a selfish viewpoint to remain.then this is book you have been waiting for.

All I can say is that this book is utterly magical. I shared one lone page of it with a prominent friend who is renowned in the USA for his spiritual teachings, and through a sequence of 100% "impossible coincidences" the lives of five additional people were greatly changed. Through these six people, tens of thousands will eventually be impacted. I'm aware of how freakishly mysterious all this sounds, but each person in the chain knew someone else and either knew HH or his eminent co-author personally. I am humbled by what I am learning as I read these words, and deeply admire how well translated this work is from HH's mind to mine/all readers. It is a great honor to share this lifetime with HH and other wise teachers.

The Dalai Lama is a human being of great wisdom. While he himself will never admit that he is a true master it is hard to see him as anything other.This book is excellent for anyone who is searching for themselves, dealing with depression, looking to get into meditation, or a whole plethora of other reasons. There is not a person on the planet that could pick this book up and not realize something about themselves they were either hiding from or unaware of.I recommend this book to everyone I get the chance to talk meditation with.

Very interesting. A bit dry. Probably not for everyone. If you are looking for the typical Dalai Lama style, this is much denser. More of a guide for those studying Buddhism. I found it an interesting breakdown of the Buddhist way of thinking and how they meditate on the concept of the "I" (or that thereof) and emptiness.

First book I've ever read of his and even if you aren't Buddist it's incredibly insightful and thought provoking. The concepts of suffering and real love (vs. attachment) have really shifted my thoughts.

A wonderful group of CD's. I listened to them over and over so that I can really grasp and do what His Holiness the Dalai Lama says. Learning how you create your reality it difficult to grasp but I am leaning it by listening to the CD's. I am sure that this give you peace of mind because of the small times I have been able to do it, (to the best of my ability). If you want to see the world and yourself differently this is the book for you.

He is a great force for promoting and helping to produce well behaving humans in the world.The explanations of emptiness and it's importance in Tibetan Buddhism are pretty heavy sledding unless you are used to understanding complex and wordy explanations though.

I love the Dalai Lama - yet, this book is a bit disappointing as there is a great deal of reference to global issues rather than emphasis on the innerworkings of consciousness and becoming one's higher self.

If you want to make spaghetti, fettuccini or any other flat pasta this book is not for you. More dumplings and gnocchi then anything else.

This is the single best book for beginning pasta makers I have ever read, if for no other reason than it does not require a pasta machine. Almost every other book requires either months of practice rolling rough by hand with a rolling pin, or, more sanely, something like my trusty Atlas pasta maker. What Chef Louis has done is write a book that absolves you even of this expense. Her recipes require your hands, maybe a fork, a rolling pin — and if you’re fancy, a $6 garganelli and gnocchi board.Why there hasn’t been a book like this before is mystifying. By focusing on handmade shapes, gnocchi and other Italian dumplings, like the homey, Germanic canaderli of the Italian Alps, Louis, who is a chef in Portland, does two things: She lowers the bar for entry into this craft, and she teaches you skills to make pasta anywhere. Imagine, for a moment, going on vacation or visiting a friend and being able to make amazing pasta with nothing more than flour, water and maybe an egg or three. Louis’ food is simple, fulfilling and pretty. There are very few esoteric ingredients in this book, and those that appear all have “normal” substitutes: like nettles, for which you can sub in spinach.This is not a comprehensive pasta book — no spaghetti, ravioli or extruded pasta here — but as a first pasta book there is none better. Buy this book and you will learn to work magic with your hands. Master this, then move on to the machines.

I received this as a Christmas gift and was very excited to flip through it. I really enjoy cooking and I particularly love cooking (and eating) pasta, so there's no mystery as to why my fiancé felt this was a good gift for me. He purchased it specifically because we do not own any pasta-making tools and are not settled down enough to purchase any at this time, so it was perfect that all the recipes are for pasta that you make by hand.Most of the recipes, however, are for gnocchi. This book should really be called, "Gnocchi By Hand." I typically enjoy noodlier pasta like linguine, fettuccine, etc. However, I have never tried gnocchi and I realize noodles require the above mentioned tools that we do not own, so I will give these a shot. I do enjoy trying new things and the recipes look great.At first glance the recipes seem very simple. I couldn't believe how few ingredients were needed for some! Then I read more closely and realized that on each page is only the recipe for the pasta itself and not the entire recipe included in each title. At the end of each pasta recipe it lists sauces that would pair well with each and references a page number in the back of the book with the recipes for the sauces. They are still relatively simple, just a little misleading at first glance.Overall I am very excited to try these recipes and see how it translates in the kitchen. It's clear that the author did a substantial amount of research.

Great book with lots of amazing sounding recipes. I just wish there was better and more visuals instructions for how to form the various pasta shapes. Leaves a lot of guessing and I ended up having to look up youtube videos to actually understand the techniques.

For the last forty years I've been a cook and caterer in Italy, Sicily and the States so the Italian kitchen I really, really know. I have purchased almost all of the books published by the Ruiz family, but this is the first one authored by don Miguel Ruiz Jr. that I have purchased. I feel that there is a certain.. uniqueness.. that sets him apart from don Miguel and his brother don Jose, however his work delivers the same overall "message" and "feel" of the family's other works. I enjoyed his good use of analogies as reference points for comparison. The only thing that really sets this book apart from those authored by his father and brother is that his writing style seems to be more.. repetitive. I did not appreciate this repetitiveness quite as much as don Miguel or don Jose's style which seem to be more linear, crossing many points with only subtle back-references. However, don Miguel Jr. broached the important topic of attachment which was not nearly as clearly addressed in the family's other works, so this book remains a key piece to the puzzle. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has previously read and enjoyed the Four Agreements and the Fifth Agreement as it provides a deeper understanding and clearer path to breaking free of the barriers that can get in the way of practicing the five agreements.

Really good read. Alot to take in and absorb, i found myself having to take breaks to question my own beleifs and attachments. Its amazing how many negative and dysfunctional agreements we hold on to that prevent us from living a life of personal freedom and minimal conflict. This book definitely helps you achieve that and can be read again and again!

This book talks about our attachments to our ideas. I realized a lot through reading this book. The maze exercise at the end was very relevant and helpful for letting go of the things others have said and done that have hurt us, but by making us realize it was the way we were perceiving (using their words to hurt ourselves) was the cause of pain. I will definitely re-read this in the years to come. I didn't care for the sports analogy used throughout the book, but I'm sure that was a less problematic example to ease the reader into the subject of attachment.

Eye opening way to look at how people's beliefs dictate the conversations you have every day and why 'debating/arguing' with others in the latter stages of attachment is fruitless and a waste of effort. If you truly take this info on board, your world view will change dramatically

I consider myself more unattached than attached to people and things. I try to be a Buddhist and secretly applaud that part of me. However, this book and Ruiz's insight and thoughtful descriptions made me look at myself more closely. Dang! I do have attachments, and no, they are not healthy ones. As with other Ruiz writings, I will keep this one for continued rereading until I can be truly compassionate yet not attached, until I can appreciate relationships without wanting to change or control them or its participants, until I can watch a movie without getting upset with the characters and storylines,and so much more. Yes, I continue to learn, and I am hopeful I will awaken.

This book is awesome! I read it attempting to process my experience during a difficult break up.It helped me see how I was identifying my ideas of my X - Girl friend with her and my self. AndI travelled up the levels of attachment until I personally identified with those ideas about us asa couple. And every time we couldn't live up to them I experienced stress and Anxiety. Thisbook helped me restructure the way I think about bonding, relationships, likes, dislikes,and choices.

If you're like me and you love The Four Agreements, then you will like the 5 Levels of Attachment. It wasn't written by the same author but you'd never know it. Don Miguel Ruiz, Sr. wrote The Four Agreements and his son wrote the 5 Levels of Attachment. Each was written from the Toltec perspective. In the 5 Levels of Attachment, Ruiz, Jr. writes about how we an attachment to what others think of us that causes us to be attached to others' opinions. This cause us to create a false self to suit others instead of being the person we are meant to be. There is also an attachment to being perfect. When we are attached to that thought, we are believing we aren't already perfect just as we are which is really the truth. It is best when we make changes based on what we want rather than trying to please others or live up to our own expectations of ourselves. He writes, "When you let go of your attachment to the meaning and the perceived truth that you apply to words and symbols-mine, yours, and others'-you have the freedom to step back and decide for yourself if those meanings reflect your experience in life." The book provides you understanding and a path to pursue so you can move from whatever level of attachment you are at to a Level Two or One. I found this a very insightful read.

In the past I have likened the Toltec teachings to a spiritual toolkit. This is an excellent addition to that kit.I've been studying, practicing, and sometimes teaching this Toltec stuff for a very long time, for the simple reasons that it has brought my life out of chaos and introduced order and fun to it. The Five Levels of Attachment brings new insights to the old stuff, but is entirely consonant with it. The levels apply to one's attitude about everything one really cares about. And the virtue of it is that it gives us a checklist to crosscheck every category of attachment, see where the level is, and also see whether that level serves us or not. If it does not, break out the Four Agreements and apply them to the attachment. Those four tools applied to these five levels will, actually rather quickly, move that attachment into a more felicitous alignment.
