My 1st grade son was a reluctant reader prior to our starting the Zoey and Sassafras series. Now he jumps at the chance to read nightly. I read the first book to him, then he decided for the second book that he'd read the first page of every chapter. We're now on the third book and he wants to read every other chapter all by himself! The stories are engaging and I absolutely love that Zoey uses the scientific method to work through the possible ways to help each animal. There's a great Glossary with each book that explains words in easy to understand ways. We need more books like these. Highly highly recommended. Buy two sets and gift one to your child's classroom or school library - we did and they're a hit there too.

My kid and I loved this book! I just saw that the book series' website also has a ton of printables to go along with the book. Cute story that also introduced concepts like scientific method, reptiles/mammals, etc. It was science mixed in with a fun story line. Will definitely be ordering the other books in this series!

We LOVE these books. They are adventurous and exciting but they are still light and happy. It is hard to sometime find books that hold my son's attention but are still age appropriate. I love that Zoey expresses her emotions, works through them, and perseveres using knowledge of the scientific method to help magical creatures. These books are fun, but they also hit all the big ones for me -- empathy, caring, working to make a difference, scientific/critical thinking, and healthy expression of emotions -- A+++++

We have every book in this series--my daughter is 5, but I read this first book to her when she was 4. She (and I!) loved it. We had a hard time splitting the reading sessions up into multiple days. Like so many other reviewers have said, it's a perfect blend of scientific thinking and fantasy--and a healthy, positive family scenario. I would love to see more of the creatures be female, though--Zoey seems to find a lot of boy critters. Why not a girl or two? :-)I also recommended the books to a friend for his 7 or 8-year old daughter, and he reported they were a big hit.I think I was more excited than my daughter when I saw the latest book in the series was available! I can't wait for more Zoey & Sassafras!

I bought this book to read with my summer camp kids, ages 5-7. We had a week of science theme camp, and we read a chapter book over the week that fits our theme. I managed to make the book last all week but it was so hard because they kept begging for “just one more chapter! Please!” They loved following Zoey on the adventure and it was great for keep with our science theme. I introduced them to the scientific method, and this book helped back that up. I think several kids were hooked on the series by the time camp was over, I know my own daughter asked to get the rest and keep reading them at home.

Great beginning kids chapter book.

I bought this for my 6 year old as a chapter book we could read together. I told her we would read 1-2 chapters a night. She begged me to keep reading and we finished 6 chapters in one day because she just loved it so much. She told me "I just love this book, it has science, animals AND magic!". Can't wait to read the other books in the series.

My five-year-old loved this book so much, her grandma bought her the rest of the series! Intelligently written, fun, whimsical, and educational, we’ve become big fans of Zoey and Sassafras in our household!

Although the murder of the author is what first called my attention to this book, it deserves to be reviewed on its own merits, and it does have some. Richard Antoun's 40 years of experience observing a Muslim community in Jordan gave him ample opportunity to observe Islam. His family background and exposure to Christianity and conversion to Judaism gave him a vantage point to notice the similarities between the three major Monotheistic religions extant today. He lucidly describes the 7 criteria he uses to determine the fundamentalist nature of a sect and gives an even handed overview of his research. As a Christian, it was enlightening to discover how my particular denomination is characterized by an "outsider." Some of us take the verse about being "peculiar people" a bit too much to heart. He didn't make outrageous accusations, or any other type of accusation, but merely recorded his observations. I hope that's not what got him killed, but it might be worth noting that his murderer was neither Christian nor Jewish. He wasn't trying to offend, merely to inform and instruct. Dangerous practices these days, it would seem.

I have previewed this book in google previews. It appears to be a factual account of the authors interactions with individuals who are fundamentalist in their approach to their Islamic faith. I will be using it in my course at a community college this Spring, entitled 'Introduction to Cultural Anthropology'. I believe this is a book for our time given the US military incursions in Pakistan and Afghanistan. We can never know enough about other culture's points of view, and how those points of view lead to action. I am very saddened by Professor Antouns death and send condolences to his family.

The author of this book was murdered today by Abdulsalam S. al-Zahrani in his office at Binghampton University.

About the Author

Joel Paris, MD, is a Research Associate at the Sir Mortimer B. Davis-Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. Since 1994, he has been a Full Professor at McGill University and served as Chair of its Department of Psychiatry from 1997 to 2007. He has supervised psychiatric evaluation with residents for over 30 years and has won many awards for his teaching. Dr. Paris is a past president of the Association for Research on Personality Disorders. Over the last 20 years, he has conducted research on the biological and psychosocial causes and the long-term outcome of borderline personality disorder. Dr. Paris is the author of 153 peer-reviewed articles, 11 books, and 36 book chapters. He is also Editor in Chief of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry.

I am a graduate student in counseling psychology and am doing research on Borderline Personality Disorder. I was almost dissuaded from buying this book by another review giving it only 1 star and making a series of charges against the book. However, I went ahead and bought it because it is reviewed by highly respected doctors in the field.I am not disappointed. Although I am only about 1/3 of the way through the book so far, I have skipped around and read throughout. It is a thoughtful synthesis of a difficult topic and makes a massive attempt to integrate the research, theories, etc. I am grateful that Dr. Paris has made the effort to put this book together.I am finding it completely readable and highly informative.

Simply, the best book on BPD I have ever read. A must for every single practicing psychotherapist around the globe.

This book is excellent and should be compulsory reading for all psychiatrists managing patients with borderline personality disorder. It constitutes a real step forward in the management of this condition. The author clearly understands this complex area of psychopathology and should be congratulated on his methodical and evidence based approach to this complex topic. It is a reference you will use frequently.

This is a very good book. Reads well and easy, not too technical but not for the lay reader. Paris is a very good writer, clinician and researcher, with a twist of well intentioned humor here and there, he does well in synthethizing a lot of research, although sometimes at the expense of being overly simplistic, for a very complex topic.I recomend this book to any therapist and researcher seeking to get a broad overview of the disorder, its symptoms, causes and modalities of treatment. However, when I say "broad overview" i really mean it. One of the weaknesses of the book is that it is too general and very inconclusive, lacking practical suggestions for treatment and research (as the title might otherwise suggest).All in all its perfect to get you in the research based, data driven, evidence based mindset of studying and treating bpd, however it will not be enough for actually doing this.

I am a student in a Counseling Master's program and I had a group presentation to do on evidence-based treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder. It has been awhile since I studied this disorder in depth, so I knew there was a lot of literature out there, but where do you start? This book was a lifesaver for me!! My presentation was during finals when I had little time, and certainly not enough time to sift through the gazillions of research studies of Borderline at my university's huge library. This book was clear, concise, and best of all it was actually easy to understand for someone that is not extremely well-versed in all of this (in other words, I am still at the beginning stages of learning the ins and outs of counseling and I still understood what was going on in this book). Also, the book was not a huge text, so I was able to read the majority of it and still get a wealth of info from it for my presentation. The book has charts/tables that go over all the major studies, and if nothing else, points you in the direction of where you should go if you have to find out more specific info (methods, procedures, specific findings of study). This is a great book to learn about the various methods of effective treatment for BPD. Borderline is a very challenging cluster of issues within one's interpersonal relationships, and this book helps to dispell where a therapist should start. Highly recommended if you need an overview of the effective treatment for Borderline!!

This is an excellent review of what has been shown to work and what clearly does not in the treatment of this awful disease. Unlike other books on BP that are aimed at practitioners and are so dense with jargon they are unintelligible, this one is accessible to people without a psych PhD. It should be very useful to families of BP patients in assessing the effectiveness of their loved one's treatment and therapist. I particularly appreciate the author's unequivocal condemnation of psychotropic drugs, which have not been shown to be of significant help for BP patients and often make things worse. I watched the pills wrench my beautiful, talented daughter from an adolescent depression into a manic breakdown and a horrifying descent into BPD, psychosis and personality disintegration. She is now in the earliest stage of recovery, thanks to a hard-nosed therapist (trained in object relations) and large doses of brain-supporting supplements. In fact, my one disappointment with Paris' book is that it doesn't sufficiently address nutritional therapies in recovering from BPD. I assume that good data just does not exist yet. My hope is that someone will be able to correct this glaring omission in the near future. Fish oil, anyone?

This book is well organized and comprehensive. For people with a limited knowledge in the bio-medical sciences, it is easy to understand the rationals behind the explanations and directions. This is valuable material for treating fatty liver and preventing this disease through proper diets. Very interesting and informative. It really answered a lot of questions.

First off, there seems to be some talk that this book is creepy. The used copy I purchased from Amazon is even an ex-library copy marked "DISCARD," so clearly people think that. I didn't think so, personally. I can see how the Keeper is a creepy character and was creepy to the girls in the context of the book, but I did not feel any tingles of fear or anything as I read this book.I enjoy fairy tale retellings, as a rule, and this one was no different. The world was nicely historical, while still having some sense of being a fairy story. I don't know how Dixon did it, but the setting just somehow lent itself to that vibe.The characters. Keeping in mind Dixon is working with TWELVE protagonists, she did a remarkable job of making that each unique. That being said, none of them stirred me particularly. Nothing was wrong, I just didn't identify with or feel passionately attached to any of them.Three major romances, all of which brought a smile to my face and were well done.I took off a star because even though this book has EVERYTHING I love (fairy tales, princesses, romance, ye olde times, etc.), I didn't find myself emotionally invested in it. I felt like I was going through the motions of feeling as I read this book. It just didn't speak to me, I didn't connect with it.That being said, the book still deserves five stars, it was nicely done and I recommend it. The four stars were more for my own experience of it. I purchased Illusionarium by this author, so that goes to show that I do like her, I just didn't have an earth-shattering experience with Entwined.

This story follows Azalea and her sisters, all named in alphabetical order after flowers. They live with their mother and father and their favorite thing in the world is to dance. Their father is a somewhat intimidating figure; they usually call him by “sir” or “the king” and are not close to him at all. They are, however, extremely close to their mother and savor her dance lessons above all else. Unfortunately, their mother dies giving birth to their youngest sister and the palace goes under a period of mourning, in which no dancing is allowed. Azalea finds out some information regarding the secret passages in their castle and they discover a magical wood beyond their castle that contains a dancing glen, taken care of by a man who only goes by the name Keeper. After time, Keeper’s real intentions come to light and Azalea must do all she can to protect her family.I’m going to be honest, at first I couldn’t stand this book. It literally took me about 100 pages before I actually started to like the book and the characters. I couldn’t stand that Bramble was so outspoken, I was annoyed that every single conflict or happy moment related back to a dance (and I was a ballerina for 13 years!!) and I absolutely HATED the way in which Ivy just ate and ate and ate and all the characters were all “oh father let her be (obese)” it honestly turned me off to where I almost put the book away and marked it as a “did not finish.” However, I was intrigued enough and kept going and I am so happy that I did. After the mother dies, and the girls meet Keeper, the book starts to get good. Keeper was all kinds of awesome; he was handsome, mysterious, compassionate and evil. That’s right, EVIL! There comes a point in the story where Azalea finds out that there are people who’s souls have been captured, these "people" have had their mouths sewn shut so they are bound to live forever trapped in this in-between world with the inability to speak. How horrific?! I loved this. Then, the evil comes to the castle and there is this epic battle and all of these love pairings come about in a non-obvious way and it was so sweet and refreshing from the immediate I-have-to-have-you-now that comes in most YA romance novels. Also? I cried. This alone makes me like this book because it was so unexpected. The relationship between the girls and their father is even better than the romantic relationships in the book, which is rare and beautiful.

What a lovely, lovely book! Imaginative, and sweet, and fiery, with twists and turns, lots of heroes and heroines. Bought it last night, haven't been able to put it down! Highly recommended for all lovers of fairy tales. I always found the story of the 12 Dancing Princesses rather dark and depressing. Though this re-imagining certainly has its many dark moments, they fit beautifully and seamlessly into the story of 12 brave, wonderful sisters. As a writer, I am inspired by Heather DIxon's imagination and grace in the telling of what I know will become a much beloved book. Having gotten a deal on the Kindle version, I will now be purchasing a book copy to add to my library.

I initially read Walter Kaufmann’s version, which is extremely scrupulous in its details. The translation however, was a bit outdated. This book’s translation is more up to date and easy to read for a young person, but lacks footnotes/translations of figures of speech - most of which are French. Nietzsche knew language very well. I don’t like the lack of footnotes, as some passages entirely in French would require a dictionary or manual input to google translate. For the layperson who isn’t particularity concerned about these details though, it’s not a big deal. The book is a complication of notes anyway, making it necessarily disordered.Despite these details, having Nietzsche’s last years of work accessible in a book like this is a pleasure. You can flip into a page, and immediately have a taste of the man’s thoughts at the moment he wrote them, about 140 years ago. Incisive, vicious, and starkly intelligent, his ideas give me conviction and reinforce many of my own ideas about how the world works. I wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to add this to your collection, despite the risk of one of your more enlightened friends dismissing it as childish, or whatever else. You probably shouldn’t be talking to those people anyway.

If you haven't thoroughly pondered the ideas in this book, then you are probably out of touch with the nature of existence.Kauffman provides a thoroughgoing context for interpreting Nietzsche, as usual—with his typical attempts at 'softening the blow', as it were. For instance, he likes to claim that whenever Nietzsche talks about "breeding" he doesn't mean "Social Darwinism", but rather, something more metaphorical. Sorry Kauffman, but that's a stretch.

this is not the complete "Will to Power" it is only the first half of the book. Beware.

This review is not based on content: based on print size... this copy’s print is VERY small, with large 1” margins on all sides of the page, they should have used the space on the page and used a bigger font size, I imagine it’s space for notations? But would rather use a notebook and have letters I don’t squint to look at.

I just finished reading this and my perspective and beliefs on life and the afterlife have forever been altered. This can easily be the most groundbreaking work ever written in philosophy and is guaranteed to reshape your deepest and fundamental beliefs on religion and philosophy. One of the challenges of this book is following the author's thought process, which is strenuous at times due to the nature of the text which are the notes from Nietzsche's journal and unfortunately they were never revised, so at times the passages seem disconnected and disorganized. With that aside, Nietzsche introduces and elaborates on countless thought provoking concepts that will challenge the opinions of yourself and prior philosophers before him.

For all of the negatives (esp. - this is not an “official work”) there is much insight int o Nietzschez thought to be gained from this collection of notes. If you’re deep into Nietzsche this is essential. If not, start reading in chronological order to understand his work, and supplement with Ansell-Pearson and del Caro

Great book, I now have the will power to not say whats on my mind to my dumb co-workers. I also have been able to control my outburst in office meetings when someone asks something completely stupid. I am sure my co-workers appreciate more than anyone me reading this book, since I havent cussed anyone out in months.

Fascinating read. Just goes to prove the adage, the more things change, the more they stay the same

I received my copy of this book today. My journey to the brush lettering started in August when I came across Kelly Klapstein’s YouTube videos. They were so calming and mesmerizing that I looked for her online. I started brush lettering pretty much like Kelly, practicing letters before I knew there was an order to my madness. Kelly must have noticed she could help us newbies by starting a beginners class on Facebook. On September 1st our Beginner’s class began. We started out learning which paper and pens where the best to use, then learning posture, the proper way to hold the barrel of the pen and the correct angle of placing pen to paper.Then came the pencil practices. Everyone wants to begin writing words right from the start, but she assured us that the pencil practices and muscle memory were just as important as the beautiful lettering. After a week of practicing upstrokes with light pressure and downstrokes with a heavier pressure we moved on to over and under turns, compound turns, ascender and descender loops and finally the ovals. Each day she posted a live feed class so we could ask questions, see exactly the correct way to do our drills and post our homework. Yes, she gives out homework. Most importantly she gave us all Positive Feedback and praise, which goes a long way to any beginner.Then we learned to write our first word. “It”. Just in time for that scary movie of the same name, lol. Kelly then added more letters in a different order than the abc order. Using letters that use the forms of underturns and overturns, then the compound curves, and acenders and descender loops then ovals. Now we were on our way to drawing beautiful letters.In her new book, she is teaching those who have a love for learning brush lettering these same skills. As I read her printed words, I can hear her calming voice as if she was teaching our classes.If you have a desire to learn “The Art of Brush Lettering”, I highly recommend you purchasing her book. You will learn from start to finish how to correctly accomplish the art of lettering with this book, which includes step by step instructions and practice sheets.I hope you all enjoy this journey as much as I have.Thank you so much Kelly for sharing your amazing talents with all who wish to learn this beautiful skill.

I kept purchasing brush pen lettering and hand lettering books and each left me unsatisfied. I found one which finally helped me, so I was done. When I saw this book was to be released late last year I was hesitant to purchase. Viewing Kelly's insta posts finally convinced me. I am glad I did - this book also works for me. After the instructions, all I have to do is practice. This is a step by step book and she shows that there are common strokes used in several letters, e.g. reverse oval is used for the lowercase letters b,p,z. when it is broken down like that I remember the correct strokes - so my letters are being formed properly. Buy this book is you are just starting out. (The other book that helped me was Grace Song - Brush Pen Lettering).

I started my hand lettering journey at the beginning of the year and I found Kelly Klapstein on Facebook. She has such a wonderful disposition and is so encouraging for all new beginners. This book really touches on the key part that makes lettering so fun and relaxing for me. It’s really about being setting all things aside and being present and lettering with intention. This book is beautifully laid out, has very detailed information to help a new learner develope good technique, tons of practice pages and overall an enjoyable read!

You must have this book if you love the art of lettering. Then you must like Kelly Klapstein on Facebook and follow her on Instagram and no, I am not paid to say that and yes, I paid full price for the book. Listen, the fact is her tutorials, lessons, and instruction are easy to follow and she is very supportive of anyone that wants to learn. I gave this book to myself for Christmas and I must say, I am a great gift giver.

This is a review of the actual physical book, not the quality of content. My practice pages do not have perforations, which is extremely inconvenient. I hate to run an X-acto knife through such a beautiful book, but I read another reviewer who said she'd contacted the author and said that there was a print that ran without perforations and there's nothing that can be done about it. Disappointed about this, but still excited to start learning from this beautiful and well-written book!

I received “The Art of Brush Lettering” in the mail today!! I’m so happy!! I can hardly wait to read it and practice...practice...practice! Flipping through it, it all looks amazing and it contains everything I have been looking for in a hand lettering how-to book...and I have looked through many of the books currently out there. I have purchased a total of three books (including this one) and I can already tell that Kelly’s book will be my “go to” and favorite book! Thanks so much Kelly for putting all of this together in a book! I highly recommend this book!! And I highly recommend visiting Kelly’s YouTube channel, she has wonderful and very instructive tutorials and information!! She is also on Facebook and Instagram.

Read this book cover to cover. Excellent instructions and great handwriting as others have commented. I loved the instructions that come from a "teacher" who has a blog. Downloadable FREE practice writing sheets. Lots of practice space. Definitely recommend this book!

I received Kelly's new book in the mail yesterday and loved thumbing through it! The information looks very practical and informative, and it's loaded with inspiring and helpful illustrations. I especially like all the creative alternatives she included, and I'm looking forward to getting to work! She did a great job on the book--very worthwhile!
