we have yet to arrive in namibia; we ordered the bradt guide after reading numerous reviews of travellers in order to prepare for our trip. this will be our first trip to africa, and it's turned out to be quite difficult to plan and to understand just what is going on, what needs to be reserved in advance, what things really cost, and where we'll be happy going/staying. after our first thorough reading of the guide (as well as reading online forums) we were able to make our decisions about accommodation and vehicles, and now we're reading it again to plan the content of the days themselves! we were happy that so many reviewers recommended this guide since we have travelled with a bradt guide in albania and it was wonderfully helpful. i feel that only with a guide book can i get a real overview of a destination's travel potential and compare destinations within a country, something that online travel sites and forums provide only piecemeal - they're too specific for someone who as yet hasn't a clue.

I have bought earlier Guides in this series on Namibia ; Editions 2, 3, and now the 4th.Each is better than the one before with updated information. Edition # 4 is now my "bible" for Namibia. I rely on these guides completely and after FIVE trips thereI have yet to get a "bum steer" from these Bradt guides by Chris McIntyre.I recommend the guide highly for anyone traveling to Namibia

Bradt Namibia and Botswana were two of the best, most informative, incredibly useful guidebooks I've ever had to any country. On a self-drive, self-planned safari, the two of us alternating reading its chapters, sometimes out loud to each other, that were not just of great practical value, but also on the behavior and habitat of wild animals, as well as safety information for humans around them.

Africa needs to be "experienced" as well as read about, & this book helps you do it even before arrival...Have been to Africa 3X and have used various guide books. This is one of the best--great maps, well-organized, excellent color pictures. Good whether you are going on an organized tour (which we are doibng to Namibia) or doing it on your own (have done this 3 other times). Per all reports and pics, Namibia is a fantastic & underappreciated part of this continent.

Seems to be a good guide book providing up-to-date information on the country and getting around in the country. Will know more when we actually travel to Namibia.

I planned to travel to Namibia in 2012 but only got as far as South Africa. I looked through this book and could tell it will be helpful when I finally travel there.

As we have not been to Namibia before,we needed to do some pre-reading as well as have a guide to the cities and game parks while we are there.

This guide is a detailed and comprehensive review of Namibia as a tourist destination. I am only partially through it but already it is worthwhile reading. I had thought that the guide would have had more colour plates on some of the scenic spots and major attractions.In all the Bradt Namibia guide was a good purchase to prepare for a trip to the country.

I bought the book for a niece, whom I am helping to plan her destination wedding. This book offers great cost savings tips, along with some very creative ideas! Many of the ideas I have not seen in other books. I wish there was a book like this when I got married; it would have reduced many hours of planning time for me...

I like how the information is laid out. It provides a well-rounded outlook on what all goes into weddings and the things that you may have to deal with. It is a great source. I really like the creative wedding tips that are throughout the book.

I like that this follows the sequence of the Bible and reinforces Bible stories as well as applying it to our own life. It's helped us to talk about issues we wouldn't normally discuss.

I bought this for my very active 3 year old son, wanting to start him out in a small act of worship daily. This is perfect for that, as the devotionals are short and to the point. They are all age appropriate and introduce Biblical ideas quickly and efficiently, building on each day's lesson. I do feel my son is learning the basics and a little more each day.

We read this every night as a daily devotional to my 4 year old Son. He is excited about reading it every night. It is a very age appropriate devotion.

Itâ€™s been great, and simple for my 4, and 6 year old to understand

I love this devotional. We use it with our kids and the lessons are short enough to deliver a simple lesson that they retain.

Pretty basic. I was wanting more. My 4 year old likes it, but I wish it was a little more though provoking for my 6 year old.

I first stumbled upon J. Iron Word's work via Instagram. I decided to purchase the book because it haunted me and moved me in a way that I cannot describe. The essence of the book is perhaps abstract as the title suggests, but the poetry captured within is hardly abstract as it touched my heart in the deepest and most direct way. A series of love letters in the form of short poems, J. Iron Heart is such a masterful writer...as he gives permission for the reader to feel as though these poems he puts to paper are actually written for Her by Him. I don't have the words to properly express the impact of this short book and how the meaning behind the words has moved me to my core. And to say that Abstract Heart has changed my life--- would not be a lie. A book for all to read.... whether one has loved or not loved before ... you will fall in love after reading this most beautiful book.

As so many others, I found J. Iron Word on Instagram. And promptly fell in love. This is the modern way of poetry and one day it'll be the death of me.

Simply beautiful! I ran across some posts of his work on Pinterest and was amazed to find he'd published a book. Touching and heartfelt, it's a great read!

Everyone should read it and study it. We have an ongoing epidemic of child abuse and most often by dear old dad.

What do you say when you read something like this? What do you say when you know deep down inside somebody's life has been so totally disfigured? What do you say when you understand an innocent human life has been so violated? What do you say when you realize that an adult can be so selfishly preoccupied with their own agenda that they go through life hurting other people without batting an eye, all because they are blinded by their own painful circumstances and negative self image? There are some who will read this and for the first time in their lives recognize the harm these innocent victims have suffered(like me), but whatever they realize about it, it will represent only a small fraction of what the victims really suffer through, every day of their private lives. When another human being has no empathy or compassion for others, they hurt people. They cannot give what they do not have...empathy, and their lives are driven by their own selfishness. Empathy and compassion can be learned though. It's never too late, but so many are hurt before that point is reached that the guilt, shame, and reproach, for some, are too much to bear.Life is full of choices, and every bad decision we make has the potential to hurt someone else. I should know...I have made plenty. What do you say, when "sorry"...is not enough? I hope and pray for the fullest recovery of these innocent victims...and wish for them to know that what happened to them...is not in any way their fault. This has been the most amazing and eye opening book for me. I have also shared it with my therapist. My abuse was by my father so the father-daughter incest is of most interest to me. I have learned all of the below from this book!!!It explains how and why incest occurs. It describes how the child perceives the event, the personality of an abuser, and the dynamics of abuse and the incestuous family. It talks about the aftereffects, diagnosis (PTSD) and treatment. We often have traumatic reenactment as we become sexual in outside relationships. We are either disconnected sexually from our bodies or we act out sexually with multiple, often random partners.Being sexual or doing things for others was the only way I felt I was of any value to anyone else. Why else would they love me if I didn't service them? How else was I of any intrinsic value? I felt power, love and acceptance when I sexually pleased a man. This became my goal in relationships and was how I attracted men. I have confused love, guilt and sex and seen myself as a sexual object.We must have the understanding of the child's reality, understand that it confounds and contradicts adult logic. Incest abuse is a process with five stages. The child usually learns to accept and accommodate and basic trust is violated. This causes fundamental trust issues for the victim for the rest of his/her life. The family is often enmeshed with lack of appropriate boundaries and role reversals where the child often becomes the significant other to the abuser.To understand why children blame themselves look only at the child's perception of reality and their defense systems. To a young child, adults, especially parents, are the embodiment of all wisdom and goodness. The child must believe the parent is good because the child is totally helpless and dependent upon the parent. To believe, even for a moment, that a trusted adult is bad would be terrifying and overwhelming. THEREFORE, IF SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS, THE CHILD AUTOMATICALLY BELIEVES IT IS BECAUSE HE/SHE IS BAD!!! Any other belief causes too much anxiety. Self blame is a powerful defense mechanism for the child. Without it the child would feel unbearable feelings of panic and terror.The problem is that while this defense is an important survival tool for the young child, victims often take it along with them into their adult lives. They forget they are no longer defenseless and helpless and continue to feel and believe exactly as they did as children. "IF I FEEL BAD, I AM BAD." This is what I am still working on today. I have felt the three D's of incest: Dirty, Damaged and Different. I have felt everyone else is more deserving than I am. I have tried continued self punishment to try to cleanse away the sins I never committed.HOWEVER, INCEST IS NOT ABOUT SEX!!! IT IS ABOUT PURSUING POWER OR VALIDATION. There seem to be two powerful forces at work inside the large majority of incest aggressors. The first is an almost insatiable need for unconditional love and adoration. There is something terribly engaging about the way that a child can love. No adult relationship is free from conflict or criticism, but children love totally without judgment. This can be a powerful aphrodisiac for a man who, no matter how powerful or competent he may appear to the outside world, carries within him deep feelings of inadequacy. Another type of aggressor defends against his own feelings of inadequacy by gaining power and control over a helpless, dependent child.It helped me to put the blame and responsibility back on my abuser instead of myself. It explained to me why my family has reacted with denial and a desire for suppression. The role and power of the abuser and family loyalty determine how the family will react. Some members have contracts of silence with the abuser. Many family members will look to suppress it or minimize it. The mother is most often a codependent enabler. Denial is what makes incest abuse a generational problem.It has allowed me to understand why I feel bad when I have bad feelings. It has explained to me why I have made bad life decisions and shown self destructive behaviors. I felt it was my fault. I continue to want to act out so that I can feel justified in my guilt and be in my comfort zone of shame and blame once again.I attempted to be good, both to deal with my guilt and to earn the love and acceptance I so desperately craved. I received special attention from my father and that is what kept me quiet and guilt ridden. I became my father's lover as my mother was distant and disconnected from him.My bed and home were never safe. I had and still have constant nightmares, night terrors as I call them. I often "played possum", dissociated and pretended nothing was going on. I had a hard time often determining if something really happened or it was a dream. I felt powerless. I tried to gain control in other ways through addictions, such as my eating disorder. I developed OCD and an anxiety disorder. I was constantly afraid and felt like I was dodging bullets.I idolized my father and always painted him as the "romanticized" version of the father that I always wanted. He had to be a loving man so I must be the bad one that was getting what I deserved. This caused self loathing. I hated my body and myself. I tried to kill both multiple times.Secrecy is what communicates that something is wrong and it is dangerous to tell so no abuse and coercion rarely are needed for incest abuse to occur. Had the other family members been safe to tell then the dynamics of the incestuous family would not have been present, and the abuse would not have occurred.We must stop denial and dissociation. We need truth and reality to heal. We need to get away from our family systems, intervention from the outside, to disclose and heal without desiring to suppress our abuse once again. Acceptance and validation are key for healing. If the victim is blamed, shamed or disbelieved then the effects of the abuse are compounded instead of changed.Let us heal and shift the blame and responsibility from the victim to the appropriate place, the abuser. Let us recover and move from victims to survivors. LET US GO FROM VICTIMS TO VICTORIOUS!!!

As a former counselor, I would recommend this book to my clients who I either knew had incest in their history or I suspected had incest in their history. Many would deny such a history in a way that would only confirm it. But they had to deny it, and that's the problem. Who wants to believe they were betrayed by the ones they trusted the most? And it's not just the offending parent. What about the other parent, the one that should have protected the unprotected? Because it is so unimaginable to accept such betrayal, the human mind typically cannot accept it. I found only one in four who could take that critical first step--acknowledgement of the problem. And it took books like this to get them there, books that clearly say, it's not your fault! Remember the movie "Good Will Hunting?" Remember the punch line to the Matt Damon character? "It's not your fault!" When you're ready to acknowlege the problem, this book will help get you there. This book will help you finally realize, it's not your fault.

This book really helped me to overcome some bad situations from my past that I had been unable to deal with on my own. With the help of this book, and also some counselling to guide me through it, I am now able to feel strong when I deal with my family and have overcome years of depression.

Reading this book as a Robert Greene fan and student of human behavior, I kept asking myself why I didnâ€™t like it. Greene has a unique gift to pull from sources throughout history, find the underlying patterns, and package them together into succinct universal laws. I first read The 48 Laws of Power 6 years ago and still regularly find myself quoting the laws as I apply them to my own life. Sadly, I wonâ€™t be doing the same for this book.You can tell he put an incredible amount of research into the topic of human nature. As I read the introduction and saw the authorities he was going to cite to make his points, I was glued and kept turning the page to see how he would pull it off. I noticed subtle changes to his styleâ€”the chapters are longer, heâ€™s more often quoting scientific principles instead of historical examples, and each law is stuffed with definitions of different cognitive biases we all suffer from. Each time he told the story of an historical figure, I read with curiosity to find out how he would use their experience to make his point. I was disappointed with the results. It came across to me as Greene offering encyclopedic knowledge of the subjects rather than presenting insightful takeaways. After a few chapters I soon lost interest and ended up skimming the rest.This made me question why I lost interest in this book after being hooked to his previous onesâ€”was the problem him or me? I had to compare this to his older books to find out.You can tell this book looks slightly different from his previous ones without buying it: it doesnâ€™t pull you in with beautiful graphic design like his other books do; the table of contents is minimal, unlike his previous books where each section comes with a description; and the back cover will make you squint your eyes as it takes a second to comprehend.The first law in The 48 Laws of Power is â€œNever Outshine the Masterâ€. Itâ€™s 7 pages. It starts with a 3 sentence â€œjudgementâ€, followed by two memorable stories: one â€œtransgression of the lawâ€ and one â€œobservance of the lawâ€, with his interpretations after each. He wraps it up with his â€œkeys to powerâ€, which peppers in more historical examples. On the sides of the pages are quotes, poems, and short stories, all related to the law. The graphic design and color makes it easy to scan. Itâ€™s smart, easy to read, and easy to remember.Now look at the first chapter in this book. Its 28 pages. â€œMaster Your Emotional Selfâ€. A longer 6 sentence description. The first six pages are a story of the law and the remaining 22 are about his observations and lessons. Instead of using historical examples to persuade us, heâ€™s quoting scientific studies and explaining different cognitive biases. The whole design is black and white, and just one quote at the end of the chapter. Instead of leaving the chapter remembering a compelling narrative about the dangers of throwing a nicer party than your boss, Iâ€™m left with a hazy memory of him listing a few cognitive biases that I generally already knew about and agreed with.I know this is a small sample size, but it shows the main differences: Human Nature is longer, trades stories for science and lectures, less memorable, and not something you can pick up for ten minutes at a time.This book doesnâ€™t have the charm that makes Robert Greeneâ€™s other books classics. You wont find yourself quoting a law to someone, or picking it up off your bookshelf to read a chapter you found interesting a month from now, because thats not how itâ€™s structured. Itâ€™s long and covers a wide variety of topics. At almost 600 pages, it feels like he sacrificed readability to fit in a few more topics he wants you to know about.

I was so looking forward to this book as his previous I found to be very much along a Machiavellian line of reasoning, baring human nature in all its uncomfortable glory. This book neither delineates human nature as it has been understood throughout the ages, nor reveals any laws. 'Reconnect to the Masculine or Feminine Within You' is one of many examples straight out of postmodernist new age therapeutic psychobabble. Furthermore, it seems that the word 'law' doesn't mean what the author thinks it means. If you are looking for an accounting of the wisdom of the ages in regards to human nature, this isn't it. I give this one star because the title made such grandiose claims. But of course, all this said, Robert Greene is a brilliant author. So what gives?My pure speculation is that shallow money grubbers at the publishing house, Viking, wanted to lube and shoehorn this author in to the lucrative 'Self-Help' genre, which as we all know, is the top selling category among books, next to the cookbook category. This is his worst book and I am debating returning it.

This book is written in the reverse of his past works. Instead of getting historical examples and then interpretation you get long literal explanations of these various laws of human nature followed by a historical example.The change in format is not for the better nor is the execution. The real problem is that Greene goes on too long in his explanations of each law. It becomes boring at times. The discussion on narcissists borders on obsession. This book is closer to Mastery than it is his other works.There's still much to like of course. I think his explanations of the laws are correct and useful. Just too much. The historical examples are excellent of course but there are too few of them.If you are a Greene fan I think you'll see this one is different and just not up to the excellence of past works. Still enjoyable and worth the purchase. Just not overwhelmingly great.

I know it wasnâ€™t easy for me to return a book from an author I admire.

Its true... Its not like his other books. The format is different and yet the subject is similar and has been touched on before. This is a huge overhaul of details that have not been given by his other books on subjects like emotional control, communication, empathy, narcissism, emotions in general like envy, aggression, pride, passive-aggression, and more. When I picked up this book to read the section on dust mites this afternoon, I felt terribly confused because it sounded just like the book I read earlier this afternoon. I checked to make sure I hadn't accidentally acquired two versions of the same book, but no, I hadn't. The other book, Taming Asthma and Allergy by Controlling Your Environment: A Guide for Patients by Robert A. Wood, was published three years earlier and didn't appear to have any link to this one. Dr. Wood is not an author of the ALA book, and his book is not credited in the dust mites section (although it is listed as a reference on page 221 of the ALA book. I compared the two books line-by-line, and they were eerily similar: the American Lung Association's section on dustmites copies the structure of the prior book, with some slight paraphrasing and editing. For example, here's a breakdown of one paragraph found on page 65-66 of the Wood book, and p. 79 of the ALA book:WOOD: "The next step is to remove all unnecessary fabric items, especially stuffed animals." ALA: "The next step to controlling dustmites is to consider removing all unnecessary fabric items from the bedroom. Try to get rid of as many stuffed animals as possible."WOOD "Other items you should remove from the bed include extra pillows, canopies, and comforters -- especially down comforters. Replace them with items that can be laundered easily, and wash all items in a hot cycle at least once every two weeks."ALA, p. 79 You should also remove extra pillows, canopies, and thick comforters (especially down comforters) and replace them with items you can readily wash. You should wash all bedding in hot water at least two weeks to kill mites.

This book provides a good baseline start for controlling environmental allergies for parents with highly allergic or asthmatic children. Of course, the parents themselves can also benefit by following the procedures indicated in the book. Two things that I did not find in the book were: a comprehensive plan for dealing with food allergies/food sensivities, and also what nutritional supplements people with allergies/asthma should be taking. Vitamin C should be taken by all people who have allergies and/or asthma, because high doses of Vitamin C block mast cell degranulation, which inhibits histamine release (thus Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine).
