Easy to make, but as far as taste go, you "get what you pay for" -- canned meals = so so dinners.Definitely great for first time college kids getting out on their own and want to try to cook for themselves!

I bought this cook book and 2 others like it for my 20 something young sons for Christmas. They were constantly calling me asking for recipes and cooking advice so I thought I would give them some cookbooks. These covered board books spell out every recipe in language a clueless teenager should be able to understand. Plus they are easy to wipe clean. There a pictures of everything and a grocery shopping list to help. The recipes are simple, easy and seems like they would fill up a hungry college student. None of the recipes require weird spices, foods or utensils --they are all user/student friendly. My sons has successfully tried a few of the recipes and didn't burn anything down.I also bought a Man and A Tailgate plan for my sports nut.

I bought this for my gentleman friend (age 56) who cooks meat on the grill but not much else. He was ecstatic. I was afraid he might be offended/insulted by the toddler style cardboard pages, but he was pleased that he could throw it (literally) in his truck and take it into the grocery store on his way home from work without destroying it. The food is surprisingly good and only requires the meat department and canned goods aisles, nothing else. Does not require any kitchen equipment other than pots and pans. Not exactly haute cuisine, but for someone who wants something other than drive through burgers and pizza delivery for dinner once in a while and doesn't want to spend forever trying to buy ingredients and spices and cook, this is an excellent book.

My cousin, who is a chef recommended this to me. The book's recipes center around using canned ham, chicken, fish, beans, veggies, chili, fruit, beer and SpaghettiOs. SpaghettiOs you say? Believe it or not each can has 10 gms of protein, only 5 gms of fat and the sauce is from tomato puree which is a rich source of lycopene. Who knew? I'll be making one of the SpaghettiO recipes today with some ground beef, shredded cheese and a can of veggies the only things being added. These recipes are simple, use common ingredients and the instructions, both written and visual are great. The other nice thing is that at the end of the instructions the author gives a breakdown of each serving (calories, protein, fat, fiber etc). Canned foods store a long time and can be used so many different ways as the book suggests. I'll now be watching for canned good sales at the supermarket and stocking up. Highly recommended!

I bought this as a gift for my nephew and i'm glad i did. Its a great starter book for a young man that is new to cooking. The ingredients are simple, easy to find, and accessible to most. Its not a gourmet cook book by any means, but its a good book to help a young person get more comfortable with being in the kitchen and fending for themselves. I can see this book as being perfect for a teenager or a college kid making meals for themselves. I'm sure after mastering these recipes a person would probably graduate to more complicated and interesting dishes, and i think that this book provides that confidence and stepping stone to get there. Not that it ventures into that territory, but once a person gains that confidence that they can actually cook something other than a hot pocket that actually provides decent nutrition and sustenance such as the things in this book, they will be more willing to branch out to other great meals/recipes. Bottom line, this book is a great start for some one new to cooking, or looking for easy, less complicated meals that are simple to make.I also bought the "Second Helping" follow up to this book at the same time and HIGHLY recommend it. I'm not saying that this book is bad, but I think the recipes in the 2nd Helping book are allot better and a little more appealing to my tastes. I highly recommend buying them in a pair. That is what i did. These books are STURDY. They come with those THICK pages like you would find in a kids book. So i'm sure you can prevent ruining the book with accidental splashes and spills, which fits right in a beginner.I might buy another set for myself just to get quick and easy ideas for myself.

I just ordered this book (got it next day (Sat) with prime membership though I did not pay for the faster shipping)as part of a useful gag gift for a really good friend. He is single, lives alone and does not know how to cook. He's over at my place for food all the time so I thought this would be a funny part of his gift this year. The book is great. It has large cardboard pages (like toddler books) and pictures of ingredients in a fashion of 'picture of can of soup' + 'picture of noodles' + 'picture of cheese' = 'picture of final product'. Then a few paragraphs of the steps with cooking instructions. Also some helpful blurbs tossed in like 'only you can prevent kitchen fires!' Its so basic and funny, it really is what the title describes. For the gift hes going to be getting cans of food and other nonperishable food items, all wrapped separately then I will give him the book last. :D

Purchased for 21 year old male whose cooking repertoire consists of fish sticks, chicken nuggets and frozen French fries. The recipes are simple, low cost and easy to put together quickly. It's done as a board book, which means it's easy to keep clean. Very practical and useful. It made the recipient excited about trying new things to cook.

As a mother of 3 sons, I've looked through many, many cookbooks for college students, and this is the one I know my son will enjoy using. It is one of his Christmas gifts, so while he's on break we will go through this cookbook together so I can give him helpful tips on cooking meals. Instead of canned meat, however, I will suggest he use fresh meat, but follow the rest of the recipes. He has gotten really tired of eating in the university's cafeteria and really wants to start making a lot of his own dinners. Each page has photos, and VERY SIMPLE STEP BY STEP instructions!

The author makes a very convincing, biblical-theological argument that preaching, the public proclamation of the Word of God about Christ from the Bible to a gathering of Godâ€™s people by a commissioned agent, is the primary means by which God saves and conforms people to the image of Christ. Very well-written. Very easy to read and understand. I recommend for those who want a survey-level argument for the place of preaching in the life of the church.

Very thorough and clear treatment on preaching from a Biblical theological perspective that aims to answer the question of whether preaching is normative and expected in the church.

Among the many books that have been published on the issue of preaching Preaching in the New Testament by Jonathan Griffiths truly stands apart. Most of the recent publications on preaching in recent years have focused more on the how to of preaching. In contrast to those work Griffiths seeks to explore what the New Testament has to say about preaching and its priority in the local church.This book is divided into three main sections. In the first section a biblical theology of the word is presented, the key terms used to describe preaching in the New Testament are explored, and the word ministry of all believers is addressed. In the second section of the book Griffiths narrows in with laser focus on six of the most prominent New Testament passages that address the issue of preaching the word, his work addressing Hebrews and its implications for the church are worth the price of the book. Th third and final section provides an overview of the material covered in previous chapters with some important implications of this work explored.Biblical preaching has fallen on hard times, and rather than argue for the importance of preaching simply based on its importance in church history we must have a biblical foundation for preaching in the church. I have enjoyed InterVarsity's New Studies in Biblical Theology series, and Jonathan I. Griffiths has provided another helpful volume with Preaching in the New Testament: An Exegetical and Biblical-Theological Study. Griffiths asks, "According to Scripture, is there such a thing as 'preaching' that is mandated in the post-apostolic context; and, if there is, how is it characterized and defined?" That question is more important than you might think.The initial task of the early church was to announce and proclaim the good news that Jesus Christ had risen from the dead, and that through faith in him and trust in his work upon the cross people could be forgiven and reconciled both to God and one another. But once communities were formed around Jesus, all members of the fellowship were then to engage in "Word ministry" with one another, teaching and reminding one another of the Scriptures and challenging those in the fellowship to live in accordance with the message they had received. Preachers were the initial heralds. But moving forward, what is the place of preaching, and preachers? Griffiths makes it clear that preaching was mandated in the apostolic age, but demonstrates that this ministry is to continue beyond the church's earliest beginnings, and that the church is wise to continue to appoint and equip for ministry those whom God calls to preach.This book includes helpful word studies, an overview of what the Bible as a whole has to say about preaching, and a close examination of the role of preaching in the New Testament. I found this study helpful and illuminating, as well as clarifying. If the church is to continue to call forth and equip preachers, it will be invaluable to know what preaching is and to what end it should be directed, both in the announcement of the gospel and in the ongoing work of equipping congregations with knowledge of God as it has been and is being revealed through Scripture. A nice feature of this book that it tells you what to look for in certain regions. I felt that the bird section was rather weak plus other topics like reptiles You need to buy separate books for each specific topics. When it comes to packing and you need to bring one book, this fits the bill.

The book gives a good overview of the birds and other wildlife one might be able to see in this fascinating country. I think it will be very helpful for an upcoming trip to Madagascar.

It was fairly helpful although woefully incomplete considering the vast number of wildlife we observed that were not represented in this book. We eagerly await Ken Behrens book on the subject, which is due to be released soon. If you are considering the Bradt Guide, I recommend you check to see if Ken's book is out and get that instead. Ken's "Seawatching" is such a fabulous book, I know his new Guide to Madagascar Wildlife will be indispensable. I only wish it had been available for our trip.

Overall good, but it would have helped to have a grid (letters and numbers) on the map and then have the grid coordinates listed for the places such as the parks or wildlife areas. Loved the pictures. Hope I have the opportunity to see many of the fauna when I visit later this year.

Purchased this book for upcoming trip to Madagascar and to be used as a reference book. There are wonderful color pictures and maps included in the book and it is small enough to carry in luggage without adding too much weight.

It is very descritive about the various animals and retiles. It is strictly a reference guide to the various unique things living in Madagascar. Lovely photographs.

I am going on a wildlife tour to Madagascar in Oct. I have read the entire book and belive it will be helpful.I can better judge the book after I get back.

I like the scope of this book. I am happy with my purchase.

These are so fun to read to the kids! To start, I find that rhythmical and rhyming childrens poems/stories are so much more entertaining for me to read, and these are so cute and funny too. You know how in Disney movies there are always things that you laugh at and your kids have no idea why, but they laugh too and so it's fun for everyone? That's how I feel about these stories. And my non-stop-question-asking-5-year-old gets to learn things like what's Benadryl? (from one of our favorites, The Wicked Witch with the Wicked Itch) Looking forward to what Katie Hayes comes out with next!

I absolutely love books like this - it offers something for my 2 and 5 year olds, but also something for me. While my boys giggle when I read â€œThe day I ate fifty popsiclesâ€ to them, I smile reading the poem about the leech placing a personal ad. Then I cried reading â€œWhen the hard things happen.â€ This book of poems is so rich and creative. I hope Katie Hayes writes more things just like this!

I love be this book and so does my family! Think: if Shel Silverstein was a hilarious mommy blogger. Also, I know the hardback is a little spendy, but it does make it harder for my toddler to destroy and I treasure it enough that I want it to survive these years! I hope this isnâ€™t the last childrenâ€™s book Katie Hayes writes.

This book of poetry is a must for your home library...so many wonderful and quirky poems. I can almost hear a guitar picking in the background as I read them. Such whimsical and delightful illustrations, too.

About the Author

Susan Goldman Rubin is the author of more than fifty-five books for children. She has written extensively on human rights in books such as Fireflies in the Dark: the Story of Friedl Dicker-Brandeis and the Children of Terezin, which was a Sydney Taylor Award Honor Book and a SCBWI Golden Kite Honor Book, and Freedom Summer: The 1964 Struggle for Civil Rights in Mississippi, which was an ALA Notable Book, a Booklist Editors' Choice and A Golden Kite Honor Book. Many of her books focus on the arts, with an emphasis on the visual arts. She lives in Malibu, California.Ela Weissberger was liberated from Terezin in May of 1945. In 1949 she emigrated to Israel and later came to the United States, where she married and raised a family. Today, Ela spends much of her time speaking to audiences of all ages about her Holocaust experiences.

This book is an easy read about a young girl, Ela Weissberger, who survived the Holocaust. It is well illustrated. Through her life, she tells the story of Brundibar, the opera played for Theresienstadt concentration camp occupants. Brundibar languished until 1986, when it was performed on Radio Prague, and later picked up by opera groups all over the world. Ela Weissberger travels the world telling her story.

One of the children who spent time in Terezin, Ela Stein Weissberger, here recounts from the beginning of Hitler-directed devastation, how she & her family & friends were affected. Ela is one of the children written about in the book, The Girls in Room 28," & here she expands on her experiences, but from the start of hostilities aimed specifically at Jews.A short book, a moving story, very good photos, a must-read.

Beautiful book about a horrific time. I recently read "Alice's Piano." Alice was also at Theresenstant. (I probably spelled that wrong.) There were lots of excellent pictures in this book that helped me understand better what Alice was talking about. This book gave yet another picture of the Holocaust. I am glad I got it.

Susan Goldman Rubin ever so eloquently details the life of a young, mentally and physically strong girl during her time in Terezin and beyond. Ela Stein Weissberger was only eleven years old when she boarded a train with her mother, sister, grandmother and uncle for a German ghetto in Czechoslovakia because she was Jewish. During her time at Terazin she becomes part of larger family of approximately 28 girls that lived together in Room 28. The friendships that developed between these girls have become everlasting. Through countless interviews Rubin documents Elaâ€™s experience in her own words. Elaâ€™s quotes are powerful and moving.This book belongs in every school classroom that studies the Holocaust.â€¢ It provides factual information in an age appropriate way.â€¢ It is a model text on how to use interviews to gather information for writing a biography.â€¢ As a picture book, it is filled with photos of Elaâ€™s life and her amazing artwork done while imprisoned at Terezin.The strength of Ela Stein Weissberger must be shared, celebrated and admired by everyone!

A couple of years ago, Maurice Sendak and Tony Kushner collaborated together to bring the world a picture book by the name of "Brundibar". Based on the opera that the Jewish children of the Terezin concentration camp had to sing, the book was filled to brimming with good intentions and sadly lacking in any and all factual information. It was more a labor of love than a book meant to enlighten children as to the significance of its content. When "Brundibar" came out, it felt as if it was reliant on a book that had not yet come to exist. Where oh where was the children's work of non-fiction that would tell younger kids what Terezin was, why "Brundibar" was important, and what it all meant? Three years later, Holiday House publishes Ms. Susan Goldman Rubin's, "The Cat With the Yellow Star" and a gap in children's collections everywhere is filled. And quite frankly, no other book could have felt quite as satisfying as this.The story of young Ela Stein begins on Kristallnacht in Sudetenland, after it was annexed to Germany. Ela was eight when that terrible night occurred, and she and her family soon ran away to Czechoslovakia. Then, in 1942, Ela was sent with her mother to Terezin from their home. A converted fortress, the camp was a place where Ela and the other children who lived with her in Room 28 would secretly study, learn art, and cast themselves in the opera Brundibar. In the show, Ela was cast as The Cat and the Nazi leaders of the ghetto decided that they would use the children's show as an example to the Red Cross of how well they treated their Jewish prisoners. Of course, of the 10,632 children sent to Terezin, only 4,096 survived. Ela was one of those survivors and the book shows how she grew up, met her friends from that time period years later, and has participated in Brundibar productions ever since. The end of the book shows a magnificent series of shows performed by children and Ela's presence at them over the years.The title is a rare creation: A children's book memoir under fifty pages. As with her other 2006 publication, "Andy Warhol: Pop Art Painter", Ms. Rubin is particularly good at writing factual biographies for younger readers. She knows that you can pen a book without growing overly reliant on chapters of fifty pages or more. As such, a lot has been left out of "The Cat With the Yellow Star". The book makes the assumption that kids reading this will already be familiar with Hitler, the Holocaust, and The Final Solution. "The Cat" concentrates primarily on Ela's tale, and explanations will not be forthcoming for those kids that don't already have some of the basics of this story down. A person could learn so much from this book too. The fact that in 1945, "the Nazis turned Terezin over to the International Red Cross" as a way of liberating the prisoners amazed me. Ela's mother even stayed on when her daughters left because she had been hired by a female Russian officer as a maid. Rubin carefully culls all the information she has been given, then keeps the book moving seamlessly from page to page. You may not be able to remember all the names of the girls as Ela befriended them, but you care for them just the same.The level of documentation in terms of pictures, photographs, records, and images in this book is also astounding. Paintings created by the children of Room 28 are reproduced here and are sometimes able to shock because of what they leave you to figure out on your own. For example, there is a watercolor created by Ela's friend Helga called, "Arrival In Terezin" that shows families walking past a guard into the camp. Look closely at the picture and you'll see that everyone in the picture is smiling pleasantly, as if this were just a Sunday stroll in the park. Why would Helga present the people in this picture this way? Was it because she worried that the guards might see it and hurt her if they thought it was anti-Nazi propaganda? Was she just automatically making the smiles without thinking about it? Pictures of this sort raise all kinds of interesting questions suitable for debate amongst child readers. Of course, it would have been nice to be able to get a little more information from some of them. There's a photography of the "special ghetto money" printed specifically in Terezin that shows an old man with a beard holding two stone tablets with Hebrew writing on them. The bills themselves even have small stars of David on them. Why would the Germans have taken this level of care in creating money for people they were just intending to kill anyway? Was this a part of the Nazi effort to fool the Red Cross into thinking that people were being taken care of? Maybe just a little more info here and there wouldn't have been out of place.Not that Ms. Rubin ever skimps on the quality source material. The Acknowledgments alone are worth the price of admission. Ms. Rubin's Source Notes are of equal interest, to say nothing of the excellent list of Publications, Articles, Videos/DVDs, Sound Recordings, Interviews, and Internet Sites all clearly presented and beautifully aligned. If I'm going to get picky I might suggest that Ms. Rubin could have placed her four sentence Author's Note at the beginning of the book (where it would have put everything to follow in context) rather than at the end, but that's neither here nor there.All in all, this is a truly impressive piece of work. It pairs rather nicely with Kushner and Sendak's, "Brundibar" (which only makes sense in conjunction WITH this book, to be frank) as well as the recent Jennifer Roy title, "Yellow Star". "The Cat With the Yellow Star" really makes an effort, though, to show how life in a concentration camp wasn't the be all and end all in Ela's life. She made friends, left, created a life of her own, and is still speaking about what happened to this very day. This book is a testament to her strength, and it tells an important story to an audience that might otherwise never hear it. Certainly worth eyeing, at the very least.
