I’ve been thinking about developing a particular app and when I saw this book about app development for beginners, I thought I’d check it out, to see just what sort of expertize I would need to either do it myself or hire a programmer to create it for me. After reading the book, even though it’s a ‘beginners’ model, I’m going for the more help from someone who actually knows what he or she is doing. I understand that Android is open source, is Linux-based, which I haved used, and anyone can look into it and there a a host of categories, the difficult part being I have to make the choice as to which one to use. For me, being a complete neophyte, it would take to long of a learning curve and would take too much of my time away from my other projects. I’m sure, for someone with a little better understanding of programming, this could be a winner of a book as it is well researched and a step by step, easy to read guide.
This is a phenomenal book. This book introduces what you need to know about view XML as you go along, diving right into the real meat and potatoes of Android programming. The author of this book understands that the reader doesn't just want to place elements on a screen, but connect those elements, perform view transitions, and access unique and novel aspects of the Android API--and he certainly doesn't disappoint in satisfying the reader's desire in that regard. I enjoyed reading it because an application is simultaneously completing as you are reading it through. I would definitely recommend this book to any of my friends, looking to develop Android Applications. For anyone that is not really interested in Android Application Development, than this is definitely not their book. Examples are working and clearly explained step by step. There are a lot of code snippets that are worth saving.
This is a good, concise "quick start" guide for people new to Android development. It helps you get a good overview of the basic structure of an Android app and how they're put together. This book isn't really an introduction to programming (you'd have a hard time following it if you had no background at all), and it certainly isn't an "everything you ever wanted to know about Android" type book (think "high level overview and building blocks"), but it provides enough information to help you transition to developing on the platform more quickly.My only gripe about this book is the formatting on the Kindle edition. I'm not sure how I would've done it differently truthfully but the poor formatting sometimes made it difficult to follow the code samples.

I used to think it would take eternity to learn how to build an app, and most probably you have to be a professional programmer to pull this kind of thing off, but this book explains it all. It simplifies and demystifies it. So glad I found this book.
Another reviewer commented on the formatting of the Kindle edition. Trust me, the formatting on the paperback edition also sucks. I'm only on page 29 and the grammar Nazi in me is going crazy. Forget proofreading. The author (or editor) failed even to spell check this document. Folks, it's not that hard. The author provided what was to be a sample of code. Instead of properly formatted code each line is a bullet item. At the end of the sample we're left with a series of unmatched closing curly brackets. Compilers and interpreters are OCD. Most programmers are, too. The author obviously is not and this makes me question the value of the stuff that I don't know. If you're wrong about stuff that I do know I don't trust you with stuff that I don't know anything about. I rated it as three stars because most folks seem to think it's OK and I don't want to argue with them. I will say that I would not have purchased this had I been aware of the slovenly way it was thrown together.
The book does a poor job of explaining the process it's more of a glossary of terms than anything else. I wouldn't recommend this unless you already know how to program and need an index of terms.
