I never read books quickly, but I read this over two days. I have always felt something for Marilyn- love, understanding, and respect.This book ends abruptly and I feel it is incomplete. Much like her own life, ending too soon. I am not disappointed as I know she shows parts of herself that she wants us to see and the dozens of biographers since her death have filled in the rest for us.What makes this special is that it is her own words. Her own musings on life, love, and men and women in general.Regardless of whether you have read other bios or not, this is an excellent read for any Marilyn fan, and the photos are worth their weight in gold.

Newly interested in the person that was Marilyn Monroe (as opposed to her work), I figured I'd start with the subject herself as she saw herself. Part justification, part autobiography, this is an unfinished work that ends abruptly just as Monroe is about to entertain the troops in Korea. There are sections that read like a savvy but not particularly reflective young actor/star, trying to save or justify her career and there are sections that seem too articulate and self aware, and almost prescient, which ring untrue and make the work feel as though it's been tampered with.Compelling but incomplete, with sections that feel fabricated by someone other than the author.

I read Marilyn's story as a teenager. It was a wonderful little book and an essential for every fan of Marilyn. I thought I was getting that book, the one heavy on story with a few personal photos included. I was mistaken. This one is oversized and has been "updated" to include a ton of photos. While it isn't a bad thing to have photos of Marilyn, this "update" has ruined the feel of the book for me. I just wanted her memoir, the story she sat down and wrote with Ben Hecht. Instead I got Hollywood.

This is definitely a great book especially with the never before seen photos. It’s great reading about Marilyn in her own words especially being such a fan of hers.

Very nice coffee table type book with some nice quality photos, but at only 185 pages (large type) including many photos, the story is very lightweight and ends abruptly on honeymoon with Joe DiMaggio.The writing sounds like Marilyn talking and shows that she was more intelligent than most in Hollywood, but also shows that she had a lot of problems relating to most people (except children), whether rich or poor, male or female, and had a real inferiority complex because of her childhood and lack of competent parenting (that she obsessed into huge permanent emotional scars). On one hand she was totally confused as to why she was considered a sex symbol, when she didn't have any sex drive. On the other hand, she was as comfortable nude as she was dressed, and she knew exactly why men chased her when she wore tight clothes (she preferred wearing as tight as possible, some sewn to her body). Seemingly, her only ambition was to be a star, yet she didn't respect movie stars, and she was increasingly immobilized with stage fright, which in turn increased her medications.Marilyn could get very few female friends because of jealousy and the married males were afraid of their wives, she avoided single males on her own, so she was very lonely. She does show that Hollywood was so completely screwed up in those days that the studios originally thought she was 'not photogenic' and it took the public to demand more of her presence in the movies (she claims to have refused the 'casting couch'.I see a lot of reviews that think that these are not her words, it can never be proven, but I believe they are completely wrong. I don't believe Ben Hecht would even consider editing her words, and Ben had too good a reputation for anybody to change his writings. This sounds like Marilyn through and through; confused, lonely, obsessed, so driven but vulnerable.There are better books about Marilyn (much worse ones also), but this is her story, in her own words with some nice photos. I would have appreciated more photos for this type book (there has to be millions more photos available), and I wouldn't recommend this book for a first purchase (see Anthony Summers 1984 Goddess).The recent movie `My Week With Marilyn' is taken from a diary written during filming of `Prince and Showgirl' is excellent. The `Premiere Collection' is 17 DVD's of 17 of Marilyn's movies, very reasonably priced (some of early movies have very little of Marilyn, however, and collection is missing a couple of must-have movies). `Marilyn Monroe Metamorphosis' by Wills & Schmidt is a better and larger collection of glossy photos than this volume, along with some interviews of her by news people (this is a larger coffee table type book of almost 300 pages).

Heart-breaking in its honesty, child-like wisdom, and openness. I have loved Marilyn for decades, yet this book made me feel I knew her for the first time. If you want to see the inner Marilyn, this book, is a must-read.

If you want to read more from travel writings than Lonely Planet travel guides (which are excellent), start with American author Paul Theroux and then try his travel mentor, V.S. Naipaul. This book has Naipaul revisiting the home island of Trinidad. As an ethnic Indian, Naipaul can travel the Caribbean and Venezuela and get an honest perspective that perhaps a caucasian travel writer might not. That's a trite and somewhat insulting way to characterize his travel books, but I've bought five on that premise and been happy with every one. If you're not as well read on the classics as Naipaul is, open one of his books and try to keep up with his literary name dropping. Maybe I haven't read the European classics that he has, but it's enough to see a citation in one of his accounts of wanderings.This is one of his shorter books, pick it up for a travel-sized read on your own voyages.

It’s a marker on the map of time. It deepened my understanding of West Indian culture. I was pleasantly surprised by the many stories of the Jagan’s in Guyana.

Well written, covers subject completely.

I decided to read something by this author who was prolific and passed away very recently. After studying a list of his books, I picked this particular one which is non fiction. I am not sure I picked the best of what he had to offer and I am not particularly interested in the history of that part of the world. Perhaps I owe it to myself to read several other books of his but for the moment, I very little enthusiasm for it.

What can you say! Naipaul's books paint an interesting picture of countries in the Caribbean as per their heritage of slavery and racial harmony. I enjoyed this book and his viewpoint! Can't help but wonder how it would read this many years later, has progress been made?

A wonderful writer with a unique view of everything revisits his homeland. Very unusual. Read slowly, appreciate.

I am more of a fan of KO's political career, and only have half-hearted knowledge of The World Of Sports(Not to worry, I still enjoy a Dick Trickle joke!) I'm still glad my friend recommended this book. Keith and Dan's humor, passion, and the way they must have worked together really does translate on the page. I can see why Aaron Sorkin was inspired by them. I think there must be at least a chuckle on every page...

Disappointed, I thought there would be more inside stories about ESPN, and not about personal stories about the authors.

Well, maybe that's stretching it a bit, but I just stumbled across this tome by Messers. Patrick and Olbermann, and I have to say it is a great read for any sports and ESPN buff. Plus, the naked pics of Dan are to die for (just kidding).This book came out some seven years ago, when Olbermann was still allowed on the grounds at Bristol, but it resonates today because a lot of it holds true. Forget the somewhat dated references to the Macarena, and you'll enjoy it for what it is: two co-workers locked in deadly combat over whether the 1899 Cleveland Spiders deserve mention or not.Patrick and Olbermann were the anchor for the good times at Sports Center, and they write with absolute candor about their time in bottom-feeding jobs across the country before they fulfilled their destinies as the premier wiseasses for a generation. The "how-to" chapter on becoming a potential sportscastor is rather intimidating, but they offer helpful hints on how to get started (and to have a back-up plan in case it doesn't work out).But the real meat of the book is the estimation of atheletes over time. Olbermann and Patrick know their sports, and it shows in the lists they compile of "the greatest". Note to the fainthearted: Olbermann's arcane knowledge of nineteenth century baseball is mind-boggling, you may want to take a quick walk outside after poring over the lists.Patrick and Olbermann may no longer be a team, but their book is a great relic of that time when Sports Center truely was "The Big Show". Pick it up today, and you'll never put it down.

This book was a great and easy read. The only flaw is the lack of humor that the show it's about is so famous for. I especially enjoyed the chapter that focused on how to become a sports broadcaster. Before I read it I had no idea the work you had to put in to become what these two men have become. It definitely made me think twice about what I wanted to do with my life and how I was going to do it. Some of this book is funny, some parts are poignant, but most of it is just biographical. If you enjoy these two men, the show, or are interested in becoming a sports broadcaster read this book.

I bought this book when it first came out in the summer of 1997 (which is when Keith left ESPN) and it is a wonderful reminder of how things used to be. Keith is now stuck at MSNBC, where he recounts the day's "developments" in the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal, and this book takes the reader back to a time when Keith seemed happier, always had a joke, and left the viewer with a smile. Sentiment aside, "The Big Show" is an intriguing look at how "Sportscenter" was put together, the blunders and disasters that seemed to threaten the show (and the hosts' collective sanity), and the world in sports in general. Keith and Dan also talk about serious issues in sports, such as racism and athlete salaries, in the midst of all the book's zaniness. I would definitely recommend this book, to sports fans in general, as well as die-hard fans of Keith. I hope that one day Keith will release another book, and that he is able to find some humor in his new job as a political commentator.

I just saw a Sport Center segment and I pulled this book out. This was the start of something special. All the sportcasters with irreverent comments and phrases...it began in earnest with these two. This was the golden era of Sport Center...Great insight and I love the phrases. It does read like the stories that those two used to do. The Big Show...Sunday Nights......And surprisingly, it ended with grace...remembering Tom Meese.If you are a fan in any way, shape or form of Sports Center, get this book!

I love sports and I love Keith Olbermann, so a book about sports and ESPN written by Keith Olbermann was a triple threat! It's an insider's look at the birth and childhood of ESPN with lots of rye wit from Keith. It's a great read when you just want to relax and have a few laughs.

This is easily one of the best books I've ever read. I first bought it back in the mid 90s, and I still pull it out at least once a year if not more to read it again and again. It has everything: It's extremely funny and very informative. I learn something new each time I read it. Olbermann is a baseball genius, his chapter on the 100 players not in the Hall of Fame is amazing. And the arguing between him and Patrick is hilarious. It helps if you are a sports fan, but even if you're not, you will enjoy this book. Great stories, great insight, great humor, great information. What else can you ask for?

I read this book mostly because it was recommended and I liked the thoughts I'd been hearing from Jaimie on twitter (@flinchbaugh). I found it to be interesting to read and have lots of nuggets of insight. However, the reason I recommend it, is that it has the, hard to say this accurately, "being-ness" of being lean. By this, I mean that it captures the true essence of what lean is. Lean is not a set of tools (although it has tools), it is not just a set of perspectives or thought processes, although it has them. It is more about an approach to life and work. But it is not even just that attitude. It is about how one collectively takes one's knowledge and viewpoints and rolls them all together to be effective.Yes, I know I'm talking a little zenish here. :) But lean is like that (or should be when understood). But this isn't just a 'zen of lean' which might leave one looking for more tangible information. It includes this quality while giving tangible information. This is what makes this a great book. For example, the 7 wastes - a couple of quotes. "when talking about problems or opportunities, do you apply the lens of waste every time?" and "The seven wastes are not to be used as an academic exercise to see how organizations can categorize things. They comprise a specific lens companies should use every day." Now I've known the 7 wastes for years. And I've found them to be useful. And I've even done what Jaimie suggests. But I've never used the metaphor lens before, although it is spot on. He talks about using them as a lens to see our process. It's not just about eliminating the waste, it's about improving the process by eliminating the waste. Doh! I knew that, done that. But the metaphor is powerful and takes it a step further.This is just one of many examples that illustrate how the authors speak from knowledge, understanding, experience and an ability to explain and transition people. I admit to having many books on my must read books on lean. This is both a good introductory book on lean, but perhaps has a special place for those who already understand the sense of it, but can't quite get what all the excitement is about. I think this book will help you understand and I highly recommend it..

The combination of the integral components creates consistency which drives results.The authors clearly describe 5 principles that are foundations for lean thinking. Everything is a process and deep understanding of process matters. An operations perspective focused on eliminating the 7 varieties of waste and delivering customer valued results is essential. Standardized processes are required for progress. Problems should be welcomed as opportunities to reduce waste and add value by applying systematic problem solving processes. Organizational learning requires processes with feedback loops and delivers cumulative knowledge and continuous process improvement.The authors' final analysis is consistent with their lean principles. Ongoing lean success depends upon deep understanding of the lean process, integration and application of all components and a clear understanding that nothing less than organizational transformation and cultural alignment is required.
