“The coolest literary eye and the most lucid prose we have.”–The New York Times Book Review“Belongs in the same category of travel writing as Lawrence’s books on Italy, Greene’s on West Africa and Pritchett’s on Spain.” –New Statesman “Naipaul travels with the artist’s eye and ear and his observations are sharply discerning.” –Evelyn Waugh“Where earlier travelers enthused or recoiled, Mr. Naipaul explains. His tone is critical but humane, and he tempers his inevitable indignation with an admirable sense of comedy.” –The Observer“Dazzling reportorial skills and a sharp historical mind.” –The New York Times

government of Trinidad invited V. S. Naipaul to revisit his native country and record his impressions. In this classic of modern travel writing he has created a deft and remarkably prescient portrait of Trinidad and four adjacent Caribbean societies–countries haunted by the legacies of slavery and colonialism and so thoroughly defined by the norms of Empire that they can scarcely believe that the Empire is ending. In The Middle Passage, Naipaul watches a Trinidadian movie audience greeting Humphrey Bogart’s appearance with cries of “That is man!” He ventures into a Trinidad slum so insalubrious that the locals call it the Gaza Strip. He follows a racially charged election campaign in British Guiana (now Guyana) and marvels at the Gallic pretension of Martinique society, which maintains the fiction that its roads are extensions of France’s routes nationales. And throughout he relates the ghastly episodes of the region’s colonial past a

If you want to read more from travel writings than Lonely Planet travel guides (which are excellent), start with American author Paul Theroux and then try his travel mentor, V.S. Naipaul. This book has Naipaul revisiting the home island of Trinidad. As an ethnic Indian, Naipaul can travel the Caribbean and Venezuela and get an honest perspective that perhaps a caucasian travel writer might not. That's a trite and somewhat insulting way to characterize his travel books, but I've bought five on that premise and been happy with every one. If you're not as well read on the classics as Naipaul is, open one of his books and try to keep up with his literary name dropping. Maybe I haven't read the European classics that he has, but it's enough to see a citation in one of his accounts of wanderings. This is one of his shorter books, pick it up for a travel-sized read on your own voyages.

It’s a marker on the map of time. It deepened my understanding of West Indian culture. I was pleasantly surprised by the many stories of the Jagan’s in Guyana.

Well written, covers subject completely.

I decided to read something by this author who was prolific and passed away very recently. After studying a list of his books, I picked this particular one which is non fiction. I am not sure I picked the best of what he had to offer and I am not particularly interested in the history of that part of the world. Perhaps I owe it to myself to read several other books of his but for the moment, I very little enthusiasm for it.

A classic but not an easy read - especially if your new to author

excellent

What can you say! Naipaul's books paint an interesting picture of countries in the Caribbean as per their heritage of slavery and racial harmony. I enjoyed this book and his viewpoint! Can't help but wonder how it would read this many years later, has progress been made?

A wonderful writer with a unique view of everything revisits his homeland. Very unusual. Read slowly, appreciate.

I am more of a fan of KO's political career, and only have half-hearted knowledge of The World Of Sports(Not to worry, I still enjoy a Dick Trickle joke!) I'm still glad my friend recommended this book. Keith and Dan's humor, passion, and the way they must have worked together really does translate on the page. I can see why Aaron Sorkin was inspired by them. I think there must be at least a chuckle on every page...

Disappointed, I thought there would be more inside stories about ESPN, and not about personal stories about the authors.

Well, maybe that's stretching it a bit, but I just stumbled across this tome by Messers. Patrick and Olbermann, and I have to say it is a great read for any sports and ESPN buff. Plus, the naked pics of Dan are to die for (just kidding). This book came out some seven years ago, when Olbermann was still allowed on the grounds at Bristol, but it resonates today because a lot of it holds true. Forget the somewhat dated references to the Macarena, and you'll enjoy it for what it is: two co-workers locked in deadly combat over whether the 1899 Cleveland Spiders deserve mention or not.Patrick and Olbermann were the anchor for the good times at Sports Center, and they write with absolute candor about their time in bottom-feeding jobs across the country before they fulfilled their destinies as the premier wiseasses for a generation. The "how-to" chapter on becoming a potential sportscastor is rather intimidating, but they offer helpful hints on how to get started (and to have a back-up plan in case it doesn't work out). But the real meat of the book is the estimation of atheletes over time. Olbermann and Patrick know their sports, and it shows in the lists they compile of "the greatest". Note to the fainthearted: Olbermann's arcane knowledge of nineteenth century baseball is mind-boggling, you may want to take a quick walk outside after poring over the lists.Patrick and Olbermann may no longer be a team, but their book is a great relic of that time when Sports Center truely was "The Big Show". Pick it up today, and you'll never put it down.

This book was a great and easy read. The only flaw is the lack of humor that the show it's about is so famous for. I especially enjoyed the chapter that focused on how to become a sports broadcaster. Before I read it I had no idea the work you had to put in to become what these two men have become. It definitely made me think twice about what I wanted to do with my life and how I was going to do it. Some of this book is funny, some parts are poignant, but most of it is just biographical. If you enjoy these two men, the show, or are interested in becoming a sports broadcaster read this book.

I bought this book when it first came out in the summer of 1997 (which is when Keith left ESPN) and it is a wonderful reminder of how things used to be. Keith is now stuck at MSNBC, where he recounts the day's "developments" in the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal, and this book takes the reader back to a time when Keith seemed happier, always had a joke, and left the viewer with a smile. Sentiment aside, "The Big Show" is an intriguing look at how "Sportscenter" was put together, the blunders and disasters that seemed to threaten the show (and the hosts' collective sanity), and the world in sports in general. Keith and Dan also talk about serious issues in sports, such as racism and athlete salaries, in the midst of all the book's zaniness. I would definitely recommend this book, to sports fans in general, as well as die-hard fans of Keith. I hope that one day Keith will release another book, and that he is able to find some humor in his new job as a political commentator.

I just saw a Sport Center segment and I pulled this book out. This was the start of something special. All the sportcasters with irreverent comments and phrases...it began in earnest with these two. This was the golden era of Sport Center...Great insight and I love the phrases. It does read like the stories that those two used to do. The Big Show...Sunday Nights......And surprisingly, it ended with grace...remembering Tom Meese. If you are a fan in any way, shape or form of Sports Center, get this book!

I love sports and I love Keith Olbermann, so a book about sports and ESPN written by Keith Olbermann was a triple threat! It's an insider's look at the birth and childhood of ESPN with lots of rye wit from Keith. It's a great read when you just want to relax and have a few laughs.

This is easily one of the best books I've ever read. I first bought it back in the mid 90s, and I still pull it out at least once a year if not more to read it again and again. It has everything: It's extremely funny and very informative. I learn something new each time I read it. Olbermann is a baseball genius, his chapter on the 100 players not in the Hall of Fame is amazing. And the arguing between him and Patrick is hilarious. It helps if you are a sports fan, but even if you're not, you will enjoy this book. Great stories, great insight, great humor, great information. What else can you ask for?

I consider myself to be very knowledgeable in lean already, actively consulting in it in the software industry. I read this book mostly because it was recommended and I liked the thoughts I'd been hearing from Jaimie on twitter (@flinchbaugh). I found it to be interesting to read and have lots of nuggets of insight. However, the reason I recommend it, is that it has the, hard to say this accurately, "being-ness" of being lean. By this, I mean that it captures the true essence of what lean is. Lean is not a set of tools (although it has tools), it is not just a set of perspectives or thought processes, although it has them. It is more about an approach to life and work. But it is not even just that attitude. It is about how one collectively takes one's knowledge and viewpoints and rolls them all together to be effective.Yes, I know I'm talking a little zenish here. :) But lean is like that (or should be when understood). But this isn't just a 'zen of lean' which might leave one looking for more tangible information. It includes this quality while giving tangible information. This is what makes this a great book. For example, the 7 wastes - a couple of quotes. "when talking about problems or opportunities, do you apply the lens of waste every time?" and "The seven wastes are not to be used as an academic exercise to see how organizations can categorize things. They comprise a specific lens companies should use every day." Now I've known the 7 wastes for years. And I've found them to be useful. And I've even done what Jaimie suggests. But I've never used the metaphor lens before, although it is spot on. He talks about using them as a lens to see our process. It's not just about eliminating the waste, it's about improving the process by eliminating the waste. Doh! I knew that, done that. But the metaphor is powerful and takes it a step further. This is just one of many examples that illustrate how the authors speak from knowledge, understanding, experience and an ability to explain and transition people. I admit to having many books on my must read books on lean. This is both a good introductory book on lean, but perhaps has a special place for those who already understand the sense of it, but can't quite get what all the excitement is about. I think this book will help you understand and I highly recommend it..

The Hitchhikers Guide to Lean is a valuable resource for knowledgeable, experienced project managers and executives who are seeking advice on how to improve their odds of success in creating a lean culture. The authors provide an insightful list of pitfalls to avoid, a solid and usable 5 stage model for implementation, an in-depth description of the operating system which holds the components together, a contrast between manufacturing and service applications and advice on how to apply lean principles on a personal level. They apply lean principles to the activities of accounting and materials management departments with less success. In spite of the process focus of most lean thinking, the authors strongly argue that lean leadership is solely about creating results, through teaching that changes thinking and habitual behavior. In our bottom-line driven business culture, this is a critical baseline for starting, growing and continuing lean activities. The authors squarely address change management issues with a simple model. Leaders must clearly define the end objectives/create the vision of adding perceived customer value. They must help all to see the real current situation and hate its waste! By creating a tension between the current and desired states, leaders can motivate staff to leave their comfort zone, avoid fear and overcome their resistance to change.Lean is an organic, holistic system, process, philosophy, journey and way of thinking. It is not an end. Lean contains a system, tools, measures and thinking, but no one component is adequate or more important than the others. The combination of the integral components creates consistency which drives results. The authors clearly describe 5 principles that are foundations for lean thinking. Everything is a process and deep understanding of process matters. An operations perspective focused on eliminating the 7 varieties of waste and delivering customer valued results is essential. Standardized processes are required for progress. Problems should be welcomed as opportunities to reduce waste and add value by applying systematic problem solving processes. Organizational learning requires processes with feedback loops and delivers cumulative knowledge and continuous process improvement. The authors' final analysis is consistent with their lean principles. Ongoing lean success depends upon deep understanding of the lean process, integration and application of all components and a clear understanding that nothing less than organizational transformation and cultural alignment is required.

My just-turned-seven daughter and I read this book together. She could read most all of it, but as she is just getting used to reading paragraph books we took turns. The book is very well written for this age group, giving enough details, but moving the story along to keep young minds paying attention. Helen Keller has such an incredible story, and I'm glad that my daughter could learn of it now.I particularly liked the little one-page interjection pages that summarized side topics like Braille or Alexander Graham Bell. These made for good summaries with some more detail of the things in the story without distracting from the flow. There are quite a few black and white drawings throughout that aren't particularly good, but do a good job to help a young child visualize what they are reading. I'm looking forward to more of these "Who was/were" small biographies.

As mentioned in a previous post, my daughter and I (and now hub) are addicted to the Who Was/Is? series of young reader books. This past weekend while frozen in we read Gare Thompson's Who Was Helen Keller?, illustrated by Nancy Harrison. I knew Keller was deaf and blind and that a devoted teacher, Annie Sullivan, was able, after much perseverance, to open the world to Keller. Yet, I had no idea of the numerous obstacles Sullivan and Keller conquered together until Sullivan's death in 1936 as well as the history behind schooling for deaf children. Go Gallaudet! What amazed me probably more than anything else is how, in order for Keller to be able to learn at Radcliffe, Sullivan had to spell every lecture into Keller's hand. Every lecture . . . Yet, their combined efforts prevailed, and Keller graduated from Radcliffe in 1904 with honors. What an amazing lesson to be learned by all less-than-motivated learners.HelenKellerquoteWhat amazed my eight-year-old daughter was how Keller had met every president from Cleveland to Kennedy. Not only an ideal chapter book to use in teaching students how to overcome adversity, but also ideal in discussions about interacting with people whom are different than ourselves. For in chapter 9, we learn, "The girls were friendly [at Radcliffe], but many did not know what to say or how to act around Helen" (87).Unfortunately, the English teacher within must mention the dreaded typo found on page 92, "The book also revealed Helen's wonderful imagination ad [sic] how she pictured her world." What is nice to note is that my squirt noticed the error, too, in her reading. Yesssssssssssssssss!Who Was Helen Keller? just may be a contender for my daughter's next book selection for Book Club Babes as they will be exploring the biography genre.

My students are in a 5th and 6th grade gifted class and all really enjoy the entire series of "Who Was?" "Who Is?" and "What Was?" books for their AR (Accelerated Reader) goals. These series are all classified as nonfiction, with book level from 4.5-6.0 and they are worth 1 point.

These are great books. All of the Who Was books are excellent for young readers. My daughter gets very excited when she can teach us a little something about history and she seems to truly find things interesting. I think this is a great read for grades 3 and 4

Bought this for my 7 year old daughter's book report. Was a great read had a ton of information and most importantly held her attention.

I bought these for my third grade classroom. They are great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing. The three years I've used them so far the kids LOVED them. Easy for their reading levels, informative, and people they have heard of in their lives. They would read their own and then read other that they had heard of. Could have left these books out 1/2 year and they would have still been reading them.

This series of biographies are good for elementary school kids. Good for learning about real people which I think is a good change from the fictional books kids usually read. They can inspire kids and have them see things in a different way in comparison to their own lives.

I purchased this book for a unit study on Sign Language for my American Heritage Girls troop (ages 6-9). The girls got about halfway through it in one meeting time. They were bored to tears. I ended up having to purchase an animated documentary on Helen Keller instead. The book is educational and a good read, just not for everyone.

My 6 yo loves dirt bikes. Like, he's been obsessed since he was 6 months old. I'm not kidding. He now has his own KTM mini adventure so how could he not read about more two-wheeled vehicles, right? At least he's reading, sigh! Funny thing is he'll ask me to skip the moped pages, Lol!

My boys received two of these books a year ago as a birthday gift, and now we own them all! They are in our nightly reading rotation of books. Very informative, and the pictures are great! They even offer a bonus of stickers on the first page!

Great book for children!

This book is great for kids who love motorcycles. Lots of action shots and STICKERS!! Need I say more? It is pretty simple but perfect for my 2 year old and probably even kids a few years older.

Worth the price; however did not keep the attention of our 2 yr old. Our son has a motorcycle, and our grandson loves motorcycle everything. The book was just okay for us.

My four-year old wants this book read every night at bedtime...

My 5 yr. old great nephew really loves motorcycles and really enjoys this book. He is able to sound out the words and read the book himself for the most part. It't a keeper.

My 2.5 year old loves motorcycles. He loves this book too. This is his favorite book right now and he highly recommends it.

The Cheeses of Vermont: A Gourmet Guide to Vermont's Artisanal Cheesemakers, by Henry Tewksbury

From Publishers Weekly

Henry Tewksbury, former film and television producer, now Vermont resident and manager of the cheese department of the Brattleboro Food Co-op, celebrates cheese makers in The Cheeses of Vermont: A Gourmet Guide to Vermont's Artisanal Cheese Makers. He provides a brief history of the art and craft of the process, highlighting various cheese makers and facilities. Cheese makers are organized by region, and cheeses by types for easy access, and "Henry the Cheeseman" provides an appendix on locating the makers (including directions), farmer's markets and a glossary of terms. Color and black-and-white photos and a map complete the production. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

More and more Americans are learning to value cheese for its own sake, not just as a topping on burgers or sprinkled over the pasta of the day. Cheeses of gourmet quality now come from small farms all over the nation, especially from small dairy farms in Vermont. Tewksbury's Cheeses of Vermont catalogs the production of dozens of cheese makers in this tiny New England state. He goes from one farm to the next, talking to the owners and describing the farms' output from pungent Camembert to herbed goat cheese and savory cheddar. Vermont offers all three cheese varieties: cow, sheep, goat, and the state's production ranges from tiny artisanal producers to large manufacturers. For the traveler, an appendix gives addresses and detailed driving directions to Vermont cheese makers statewide. Mark KnoblauchCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Henry Tewksbury spent the better part of his career as Peter Tewksbury in California, where he produced films and TV shows, such as Father Knows Best and My Three Sons. In his later years, he started a second life in Vermont as a cheese expert and consultant and to mark the change, reverted to his real first name, Henry. Tewksbury's transformation from Hollywood bigwig to small town cheese connoisseur is oddly parallel to that of many of the cheesemakers whose stories he tells in this informative and engaging book. While a few were born and raised on the farm, others left successful jobs in law, finance, teaching and other professions for the lure of healthy country living and the chance to try something new. There are several well written and comprehensive guides available for selecting and serving artisanal and farmstead cheeses from around the world, including many that are produced in the USA. What sets this book apart from all the rest is its focus on the hard-working people who have created these fine cheeses: how they got started in the business, how they learned about making cheese (often with the help of others who came before them, but sometimes also through trial and error), and what their daily life is like. Of course, there is also information about each producer's cheeses, along with Tewksbury's personal assessment. His admiration for what these cheesemakers have accomplished, their vision and passion, and the originality of each cheese shines through in the writing.Potential readers should understand that the book is a snapshot of Vermont's artisanal cheese movement as it existed about five years ago when the book was researched and written. Most of the information remains valid today, but a few things have changed. The most notable "omission" is Mateo and Andy Kehler from Jasper Hill Farm in northeast Vermont. Their cheeses are now considered to be among the very best made in America, but they were not yet in operation at the time the book was written. Unfortunately, Henry Tewksbury died the year after the book was published, so unless someone else takes up the charge, there will be no update. That, however, should not deter the cheese enthusiast who wants to know "the story behind the story" of farmstead cheesemaking. Highly recommended!

For several years now I've been placing my order with Cabot Farms or Grafton village for some of their wonderful, aged, Vermont white cheddar cheese. Wisconsin not withstanding, I am convinced that the finest cheddar cheeses in the world come from Vermont, not to mention the fact that they are found in some of the most gorgeous settings to be found anywhere. You can't help but picture New England on a snowy winter's day. That's why this book was such a great read. I was already familiar with many of the Farms mentioned by Mr. Tewksbury, having visited many of their websites in the past, but I certainly found some new places I was not aware of. Learning about Vermont's cheesemakers and the products they lovingly craft makes eating them all the more enjoyable. Tewksbury tells us where and how each artisan makes cheese, which operations welcome visitors, and where to purchases the cheeses.Thank God for the Internet because no matter where you live you can have these wonderful products of Vermont sent right to your doorstep.
