As a Trauma RN, I was already aware of the behind the scenes issues and protocols associated with organ donation. This book gave me a better look at system wide issues including conflict of interest problems, poor methodology, and overall bad science that drives the billion dollar push for donation. From experience, I know that families can be bullied, harassed, and shamed into making choices they may not want or agree with when tragedy strikes. I am very aware from practice that the line between "dead" and "alive" can be crossed and re-crossed in many ways during the care and treatment of the injured patient. This book is an eye opener for the uninitiated and confirmation of doubts and suspicions for those who have traversed the mine field of organ donation. Highly recommended read no matter where ones sympathies are.

I was tempted to rate this book with five stars, as others have done, merely to counteract the work of reviewers who haven't read the text. But I cannot in good conscience do so. Instead I have rounded up from 3.5 to 4 stars. There is much to recommend this book, but I will not offer unadulterated praise.When deciding whether or not to buy or read this book, look at the dates of the reviews (noting that many of the one-star reviews were posted the day the book was released- I read well and fairly quickly, but a careful reading of the text took time) . Many such reviews admit to being based on a Wall Street Journal article rather than this book. I think it reprehensible to review a book one has not read. I find the impassioned hyperbole warning readers away from this book more dangerous than the hyperbole occasionally employed by the author, though the latter bothered me occasionally, as well. Disallowing these things to be said will not make them untrue or irrelevant. Do not think either that having received a donated liver makes a reviewer qualified to discuss the merits of this book without reading it. But I digress; this was not meant to be a review of reviews (but it clearly is that, too). My point is that if the issues discussed in the book interest you at all and you do not think that discussing something unpleasant should not be allowed, I recommend this book.As I suggested, Mr. Teresi does tend toward hyperbole. His refusal to dispense with the term "harvesting" in favor of the more palatable terms such as 'organ procurement' smacks of a desire render the entire process unpalatable. He implies several times that a DNR order is sometimes tantamount to "killing ... loved ones" (eg, pg 93). This narrow-mindedness was evident occasionally in the writing, though Mr. Teresi deserves much credit for looking at the issue of death and organ procurement/transplantation from many different angles. In addition to being well researched, the work is well cited, so the research is documented and fairly easy to replicate.I think that as a responsible thinker who sees the issues Mr. Teresi raises as alarming and worth pursuing, I must read as many of his sources as possible. I realize that not everyone has the time or desire to do this, but one should not declare well cited material to be "lies and fabrications" as some reviewers have, without investigation. I must say that I am distressed by reviewer S.Fitzpatric's accusation that Mr. Teresi has altered his email transcript to suit his purposes. Such allegations should be carefully considered and investigated.This book has some problems, such as Mr. Teresi's repeated insistance that he has no cause to sway reader's opinions but only to report facts. This, he mixes in with talk of killing grandma that will remind many bioethicists of "the daughter from California". But the information itself, the important piece of this puzzle, seems solid and well-researched, and more importantly, is very timely in the discussion of organ transplantation from 'dead' donors. This book's problems are worth moving beyond in the interest of learning from a great body of research on the historical and contemporary approaches to the problem of determining death and the implications thereof for organ transplantation from dead donors. Although the conversation will necessarily be uncomfortable for advocates of organ donation (as I have always been), it is essential and could actually advance the cause to address the issues Mr. Teresi raises, if done honestly, transparently, and thoroughly.

Modern medicine has made it no easier to say with certainty exactly when our conscious awareness has truly left the body. Are you dead when you are no longer you? or are you really and truly dead only when your body starts to putrefy? Are there fates worse than death? What if you are aware, but can not move or respond so you are treated as though you are a vegetable? What about your organs - shouldn't they be harvested when they would be of more use to someone else (obviously before your body starts to rot). What if that "brain dead" individual is aware of the pain when organs are "harvested" should these patients be anesthetized before opening them up (apparently the organs are healthier if no anesthesia is used to "harvest" them).Dick Teresi raises more questions than he answers, but they are questions that need to be raised and discussed.

I have noticed that among the gentry not every Richard can be called Dick. This is an unusual case in which Dick is the writer and Richard a mere resident of Amherst, MA. I was glad to see the book appear because I had wondered what new forms of hanky panky had emerged in the world of organ donation. The first clue that it was business as usual was when an elderly Chinese man handed me a pamphlet on Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco describing a thriving organ-harvesting industry in the Peoples' Republic of China. But evidence is easy to refute. Some familiarity with human nature would lead one to posit that the demand for organs and the need to harvest them while the patient was still alive if he/she could be deemed brain dead might lead to what the author calls philosophical rather than medical determinations on just who is brain dead and who is not. The spectrum of criteria for admission is likely broad. Oh she can no longer wear a bikini and walk along the beach. Oh he has forgotten how to integrate in the complex plane. Finally I really liked the number of one and two stars the author drew from reviewers. That means he has something unusual and original to say.

This book opened my mind on a few issues regarding brain death and organ donation. And to me, at this point, there are still no clear cut answers. As a nurse and lawyer at a teaching hospitals, I know that organ transplantation is a big business, but had no idea of the extent. I did revise my Healthcare POA documents to reflect that I want brain flow studies prior to being declared brain dead and the organs geing procured. This book has raised so many issues in my mind. Now I need to do more research and find the answers that satisfy me. This book is an excellent primer for anyone with a less than stellar knowledge of the issues. Easy, interesting read with a decent history of the concept of brain death.

A beautiful book featuring pictures of a gritty NYC in all its glory. The photography of city streets, people, and celebrities are showcased through Chris Stein’s artistic eye. The book features never before seen shots of Debbie Harry that are stunning. Every turn of the page was exciting and stimulating in its depiction of life in the City.

This is an excellent book that takes a look at everyday life of regular people living in New York City. There's only a handful of photos featuring Debbie Harry and other punk rock icons. The bulk of the book are beautiful black and white photos of New York City during '70s.

I was never a punk rocker. Thier music is creative and Debbie had the style, moves, and vocal to propel this professional group to the top charts. Yes we think of Debbie when we hear blonde. But hey thats the name you gave your group !! It’s like Fleetwood Mac and Heart. Same thing. The individual musicians make the whole. I would be very gratified as your book portrays. It’s to bad I never got to meet you all. I was head over heals in my twenties for Debbie. You have made your mark. Great books. Wish you didn’t have to struggle so much. Cheers.

I love this book. Stein is a gifted artist on multiple platforms and this book is exactly what I was anticipating - excellent. His writing is very personal and brief regarding the photos. Leaves you wishing for more.

Board of Education, Watergate, and Iran-Contra, as they indirectly affected the political will to mobilize for and against national health insurance, making this account all the more believable and nicely nuanced.My only complaint is that since the book was published in 2005, 2006 Part D legislation which expanded Medicare coverage, could not be discussed, but hopefully an updated edition will be written in a few years. Overall, a surprisingly interesting and readable primer on such a complex issue.

I've been on a tear with these rock biographies lately. Growing up in the 80's I was a big fan of Heart's big hair rock. Always loving songs like "What About Love" and "These Dreams." When I got into vinyl, I bought Dreamboat Annie and was amazed at how really great this band was. I had no idea from the commercial pop rock that I had been listening to. Listening to this audiobook narrated by the sisters (and a few friends) gave a lot of the candid history of the band including details of their military brat upbringing and more interesting, the Fleetwood Mac style escapades of the band members.If you're a fan of the band or maybe a budding female musician, read or listen to this book. A great history of a great band.

If you’re a fan of Heart, then this is a must read book. The Wilson sisters alternate telling their story with a few other narratives thrown in. It was interesting to read about their childhoods and how they got into music. They had a wonderful supportive family and reading about their parents was touching. Sometimes their paths were separate but their close relationship always drew them back together. It was meant to be. They were persistent despite many obstacles. I liked reading about how some of their biggest hits were inspired. Who was the “Magic Man”? Who was the “Barracuda”? I also appreciated the honesty in their narratives. Ann discusses the attention given her weight issues simply because she’s a woman, and Nancy relates her problems with infertility. But first and foremost, Ann and Nancy Wilson are talented musicians. I love that they’re still rocking on because they love it. They have a unique perspective being women in a male dominated field. Yes! Women can rock and do it well! Rock on sistas!

Real stories, well told- both the Audible and written versions. The audio is actually Ann&Nancy, Sue&Lynn. What a treat! (The guys are the narrator.) Unlike most 'stars', the Wilson girls had a very different view of achieving success. Like many of us who saw John&Paul on Ed Sullivan, playing a guitar/bass on stage became our passion and our job. Hearing each sister's story is both sad and refreshing. If anyone deserved to create the best sounding, most successful rock band to the world, it was the Wilson sisters! Sharing about their caring parents, Lou and John and their long-suffering guidance, provided that solid family background and that has never vanished. Reading this book, and hearing the girl's voices reminds one to re-listen to their songs and to watch their performance live on the recent reunion video with Steve, D'Rosh, Rog and the amazing Howman!-that will always give a lift to one's day, if not bring tears to your eyes and joy to your heart. The power and determination of Ann&Nancy are obvious-and this work shows that it was extremely hard work and had many setbacks and worldly conflicts which they overcame. For anyone who cares about Heart, this book will make you care more about Ann&Nancy than any ordinary 'fan' could. A meaningful showbiz tale. Thanks girls for documenting these decades of joy, setbacks and rewards for all of us!

The book is a first-person narrative of Ann and Nancy's life stories. They start with their childhood and take turns recalling home life, Mom and Dad, Ann's childhood struggles with her weight, and the night they saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, an event that changed their lives. There is Ann's first guitar, the young sisters performing for their teenage friends (Nancy wasn't even twelve), and so on. The book continues in like fashion through more than forty years, all the way to present (2012 is the latest date in the book, I think).If anyone is hoping for titillating Women of Rock debauchery, forget it. It isn't here. The Wilson sisters tell their stories they way anyone would. They recall people and events, and they reflect on how forces sometimes co-mingled and nudged their lives this way and that. They recall decisions they made and the outcomes of those decisions. They recall good times and not so good times. And, they reflect on the way things turned out.I came away from the book thinking of them more as people with a home life who just also happen to perform in a band. So much so, that I was sometimes surprised when some other Rock icon would pop in at one of their homes, which reminded me that these ladies are Rock Royalty!

This is an important book - more than most would think - given the fact that women in music STILL do not enjoy the same status as men.I've enjoyed Heart since their first album, Dreamboat Annie, was released but haven't followed them closely over the years. This book filled in gaps in knowledge and also lent a great insight into what makes the Wilsons' contributions so valuable.The multiple viewpoints offered in each chapter were very much appreciated, as the differences added a lot of depth to the story. Personal details are handled with care; it's obvious the Wilsons are not the typical "rock stars" or "celebrity" types.The book was easy and conversational; the tone of the speaker was apparent, and it was important that this wasn't overly tampered-with, though the copy could have used a little more editing in spots.I would like to see another book that deals more with the Wilsons' creative work specifically - a packaging of lyrics with accompanying graphics, perhaps!

I became aware of Dr. Feder when I heard him on the Monster Talk podcast. I figured that someone who was so enjoyable to listen to must be just as enjoyable to read, and I was right. Dr. Feder accomplishes 2 things with this book, first he addresses some of the most common stories and legends that impact his area of scholarship, second he teaches readers how to think critically and to evaluate new and different claims. Before I purchased this book I read reviews of his previous edition. Frequently the reviewers were upset that Dr. Feder had not addressed their pet theory abt a particular claim. For those of you who have read them as well, let not your heart be troubled. Of course Dr. Feder cannot address every single claim abt Atlantis or aliens or giants. He picks the most common claims and then applies a very simple critical method to explain why they are unsupported in the archaeological record. This technique can be easily applied by the reader to any pet theory that he left out. Dr. Feder made no definitive statements without citing to not only scientific consensus but to either the absence of physical evidence for or the abundance of physical evidence against the various issues he presents. One unique thing that Dr. Feder does not do is that he does not get beyond his skill set. Although he may refer to other issues that people should be skeptical of he does not address them the way he does archaeological issues.The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars is that I wish it was longer. Viewed as a text book it is probably the easiest to read and most accessible text book I have ever bought. It reads quickly and Dr. Feder avoids complicated explanations and jargon and by the end I wanted more to read.The book is not cheap but I do believe that I got my money's worth.

Science in America is under attack from some very cynical oligarchs and opportunistic politicians. Just because a fact effects one's bottom line negatively, doesn't make it any less true. "Frauds, Myths and Mysteries" gives one a good introduction to the scientific method as applied to archaeology, followed by applying that method to the claims of the delusional and unscrupulous. Prof. Feder shows how many of these claims were expressions of their less than enlightened times while other, more recent frauds are expressions of vicious racism and profiteering."Frauds, Myths and Mysteries" is used as a college text, so the latest and greatest 8th edition will lighten one's wallet considerably. My copy is of the 7th edition from about 2011 and including shipping cost around $10. The book is well written, well organized and very well illustrated. Highly recommended.

Feder while a bit snarky, and he admits it, takes on the myths and pseudoscience that the general public get fooled by. not much difference between the editions until you get to the recently published 9th

If you've ever been curious about archaeology, ancient alien myths, or pre-historic giants, this book will break down those topics and more. It basically deals with a lot of myth busting and is surprisingly easy to read for a book that deals with archaeology.

For one that is interested in why humans have myths and why we still keep making them up, this is a great book. Many good examples of frauds and solved mysteries (Some I did not even know where solved). Well thought out and easy to read it explains the scientific method in a language anyone can understand. It is rather steep on price but it is worth it to a large extent. I think that all people would benefit from reading this book as I feel too many of us have no understanding of science and what makes it the best system for discovering our world. Whether you buy this book or get it through the Library... GET IT.

I read this for an introductory course on archaeology. The writing was very clear and unfussy - to the point that sometimes it almost seemed too simple for a college course. This book is definitely a good primer for the layperson. The specific cases mentioned are quite interesting, and the scientific explanations help you understand how researchers have gone about debunking myths with data. It's a practical guide for people who might otherwise find the material dry and uninteresting.

I listened to Dr. Feder on the Monster Talk podcast and found him so engaging that I decided to purchase this book. It turned out to be a worthwhile purchase.The book is intended to be a textbook but don't be put off by that. The book reads quite well; Feder is as good a writer as he is a speaker. His prose is quite accessible with many pop culture references like comparing Neanderthals to the cavemen in Geico commercials and comparing Plato's Atlantis story to Star Wars. It is also an interesting way to teach archeology (although anthropology and paleontology are also touched on extensively), contrasting bad, psuedo-archeology with the real deal. It entertains while teaching. I'm convinced that Feder is very popular at Central Connecticut State.The title is quite accurate; frauds (Cardiff giant, Piltdown man), myths (Atlantis, ancient astronauts), and mysteries (Moundbuilders, pre-Columbian America) are covered in many chapters. Most of the subjects were familiar to me except for the Moundbuilders but Feder had entertaining and original takes on all subjects.I purchased what Amazon describes as a "print replica, Kindle edition". This means you can't read it on a traditional Kindle only on a Kindle application for a PC or iPad or other tablet. Fortunately, I have an iPad and read it on that. The book is formatted something like a pdf file. The book read fine when expanded to eliminate margins but it is tedious to do so repeatedly for every page. Anyone know if Kindle for iPad can preserve sizing from page to page? If so, I couldn't figure it out.Highly recommended if one can afford the textbook pricing. It's come down since I purchased it but it is still somewhat high for mass market appeal.

BEAUTIFUL songs! I just received my book today and was playing a few of the songs. They sound just like the songs from his albums. I'm very pleased!!!!One down-side... It's not spiral bound.NOTE TO PUBLISHERS: PLEASE PLEASE publish your piano song books in a spiral-bound format. I don't understand why anyone would publish a piano book in a non-spiral format. It makes no sense!

As an intermediate player, I've struggled somewhat with this music, but once I've accomplished all the notes, chords, etc. I absolutely love it. The music is enchanting. I think I've fallen in love with Jim Brickman!

This was a gift to my grandson who request it. So I'm sure he loves it.

I just love Brickman. I hear his songs played on iheart - The Piano Guys Radio all the time. I especially love Valentine.

My 10 and 13 year old boys enjoy playing Jim's arrangements - they do so without prompting! It feeds their creative interpretation of contemporary music

I love listening to my teenagers play from this book. It provides a bit of a challenge, but not too difficult that they get frustrated.
