When I picked up this book to read the section on dust mites this afternoon, I felt terribly confused because it sounded just like the book I read earlier this afternoon. I checked to make sure I hadn't accidentally acquired two versions of the same book, but no, I hadn't. The other book, Taming Asthma and Allergy by Controlling Your Environment: A Guide for Patients by Robert A. Wood, was published three years earlier and didn't appear to have any link to this one. Dr. Wood is not an author of the ALA book, and his book is not credited in the dust mites section (although it is listed as a reference on page 221 of the ALA book. I compared the two books line-by-line, and they were eerily similar: the American Lung Association's section on dustmites copies the structure of the prior book, with some slight paraphrasing and editing. For example, here's a breakdown of one paragraph found on page 65-66 of the Wood book, and p. 79 of the ALA book:WOOD: "The next step is to remove all unnecessary fabric items, especially stuffed animals." ALA: "The next step to controlling dustmites is to consider removing all unnecessary fabric items from the bedroom. Try to get rid of as many stuffed animals as possible."WOOD "Other items you should remove from the bed include extra pillows, canopies, and comforters -- especially down comforters. Replace them with items that can be laundered easily, and wash all items in a hot cycle at least once every two weeks."ALA, p. 79 You should also remove extra pillows, canopies, and thick comforters (especially down comforters) and replace them with items you can readily wash. You should wash all bedding in hot water at least two weeks to kill mites.

This book provides a good baseline start for controlling environmental allergies for parents with highly allergic or asthmatic children. Of course, the parents themselves can also benefit by following the procedures indicated in the book. Two things that I did not find in the book were: a comprehensive plan for dealing with food allergies/food sensivities, and also what nutritional supplements people with allergies/asthma should be taking. Vitamin C should be taken by all people who have allergies and/or asthma, because high doses of Vitamin C block mast cell degranulation, which inhibits histamine release (thus Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine). I have used this book for years and bought a copy for my son-in-law who just bought a new house . This is a superb book for plants of all types for the Southeast. I am sorry there is no newer edition, but if you can find this book it is well worth it.

I borrowed this book from my Landscape Design prof and it is such a fabulous resource, I bought it for myself! Plants are easy to find and categorized by size and evergreen/deciduous. I have yet to have trouble finding a plant and all pics are in color. Less detailed than Dirr's Woody Landscape Plants of the Southeast, but comparable for like 30x cheaper. Highly recommend

This book was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I'm a landscape designer in the Midwest who wanted to learn the plants and trees of the southeast because I hope to move there in the next few years. Written well, this reminds me of the text books we used in landscaping school to learn our shrubs and trees. Excellent reference manual with descriptions and pictures for each specimen.

I bought my first copy of this book about 15 years ago. I have enjoyed reading through it like a book (!)...and mostly using it as a resource to identify shrubs (in yard of our new house) and planning our future garden beds and foundation plantings. The book is divided into sections so helpful to guide you correctly to what you need. I love it. When it came time to buy a birthday gift for one of my sons, I thought of this book. Now, he and his wife have a copy and can use it as I have. What more can a mother be for??

About the Author

Bob Lorentzen began writing and publishing in 1986 because the regional guidebooks people wanted were not being published. His four Hiker's hip pocket Guides have set a new standard of excellence for trail guides. He's been an active Coastwalk volunteer since 1987. Bob and his family love to explore new country and find new trails. He hiked nearly 300 miles on the CCT Whole Hike of 1996 and about 400 CCT miles researching Volume Two. Bob graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz with a degree in cCommunity Studies. This is Lorentzen's eighth book Richard Nichols has been Executive Director of Coastwalk since 1991, a Coastwalk volunteer since 1983. He led the CCT WHole Hike of 1996, walking almost 1200 miles from Oregon to Mexico in 112 days. He has worked on environmental issues in his home town of Sebastopol in rural western Sonoma County for 17 years, including instrumental work in wetlands preservation of the Laguna de Santa Rosa and other land issues.

This book is wonderful! I’ve been doing the CA Coastal Trail as day hikes with two friends. We definitely rely on this book. It is split up into easily doable day hikes with a map for each section showing access points and points of interest along the way. The descriptions of each walk are very detailed and I’m amazed at how little has changed since 2000. He also includes the history of all the different regions of the coast. This is definitely a great resource for walking the California coast.

The California Coast offers some spectacular scenery and parts of it, mostly north of the San Francisco Bay, offer some spectacular hiking. But the southern end of the California Coastal Trail, the state's "millenium trail" as the authors of this book constantly remind us, is more imagination than reality. Private property, the Diablo nuclear power plant, environmental restrictions upon camping, and the lack of any actual trail tread for miles upon miles of the coast means that much of the hike is along roads with no real legal place to camp. The first thru hikers, or "Whole Hikers" in 1996 did their trek with continuous automobile support driving them to and from the "trailhead" and motels and campgrounds. This is cost prohibitive for the vast majority of hikers who might imagine that they can plan a through hike on this trail the way they might on the Pacific Crest Trail or shorter cousins like the Tahoe Rim Trail.The bottom line then is that this "guide" to the trail in the southern part of California is most useful for day hikers who want a pleasant walk along the coast or in one of the nearby coastal ranges and who would like the further satisfaction of saying they have walked upon the largely unsigned California Coastal Trail. Even the segments it is broken into are not convenient for long term planning though they will mostly make for pleasant day hikes. (Some of the segments, however, are too long for this type of use.)The book does have some nice features including interesting sidebars on local history and accounts of various conservation battles along the coast. (Oil spills, we are told, are not good for the environment.) And every chapter, indeed virtually every segment within every chapter, includes the authors' suggestions for where the trail should be re-routed. That in and of itself is enough reason for me to recommend that you skip volume 2 (this volume) of this guide. If you need to do a through hike of the California Coast, Volume 1, now in its second edition, and covering the northern part of the state is much better. Until a trail is actually completed in the Southern part of the state, readers and hikers would be better served by John McKinney's 'California Coastal Parks.' The dayhikes he recommends along the coastline south of Monterey offer a much better recreational payoff for this highly developed region.

This book's content could be summed up in the phrase, hit the road. A California road atlas will provide most of the information offered in this book. The coastal trails, when present, parallel the Pacific Coast Highway, however, most of the "hiking" is walking on roads. Perhaps, the State of California will further develop a "Coastal Range" sojourn that would be detailed in a book such as this. Walking highways is not hiking.

Love this series!

Feels like a fluff book to me... Images are cute, story ok, but not anything memorable. Had to re-read it three times just in writing the review because I could not remember what it was about. Plus, it just throws in the true message of Easter on the last page too instead of making it the main focus. My son who loves to flip pages and look at images was less than thrilled. Overall, I think the book would be better for girls than boys and definitely more of a spring book than and Easter book.

-rhymes-sturdy board book-mentions God on about half the pages ("God gave us sun for play and fun")-all pictures of animals-no images of Jesus, a cross, Easter eggs, etc-last page actually pertains to Easter: Springtime blessings all around/God gives to everyone/And from above He sent His love/Through Jesus Christ His Son/On Easter morning Jesus rose/We praise Him when we say/"We love the spring and Christ our King"/God bless our Easter day

Bought this for little granddaughter's Easter basket, and it is an adorable book! Perfect for her age to talk about Easter, and God's love for all of us! Would definitely recommend for little ones. Love this book!

This book was absolutely loved by the grandkids who are 20 months and 30 months old. Absolutely beautiful book!! For toddlers and young children appreciating God's creation is a wonder producing, awe inspiring lesson that will help them understand God's love for them as they gain in understanding. Only then will they understand the love God showed by sending his only begotten Son to live among us and die for our salvation. I understand reviewers who are concerned about "not enough about the Resurrection" but after four kids and eight grandkids I understand that building a little one's concept of God and creation is also foundational. I look forward to reading the book over and over and over with our little ones.

This book was an Easter gift for my 15-month-old son. He loves it and often chooses it out of other book selections. I don't love that the ducklings and baby chicks look so similar. We do animal noises with pictures and I feel like it's confusing.

I LOVE THESE BOOKS! THEY ARE MY GO-TO GIFT. I've bought these books for baby shower gifts, Christmas gifts and for my own kids. I just adore these books. They are so beautifully worded...very sincere wording that rhymes, along with the most adorable artwork. These are thick books with a nicely padded cover. An essential in every Christian home! Highly recommend to any and all!

ALL of the books in the "God Bless" series are adorable!!!! My kids favor these books most of all. The pictures are bright and cheerful, and the words are always simple and easy to read to children. I would HIGHLY recommend buying all of them!!

We have ordered almost all of these books in this series. Although I wish they would all talk about God and Jesus a little more. They are wonderful cute little stories and my babes love looking at all the baby animals.

I like Randy Frazee. I've had the privilege of hearing his teaching in person. He is forthright in this book about what happens after you die, backed up by scripture references, for those who believe in Jesus and those who do not. The book is readable and engaging, but most of all reassuring. Yes, Jesus is enough. The book can also serve as a great future reference or for discussion with those who do not believe and have questions.

Having heard Randy Frazee preach at Oak Hills Church, I eagerly awaited his new book. It met or exceeded my expectations, in that Randy always stays true to scripture and is exceptionally honest. He freely admits there is much we don't know about heaven, but he answers the most basic question of all--is accepting Christ as your savior enough to qualify you for eternity in His presence? He used the story of his mother's death to illustrate his own fearful doubts about Heaven, during the last three days of her life. It's comforting to me to know that even the pastor of a large church has doubts from time to time. I did learn a new concept, that of an "intermediate" place after death for believers, before Christ returns to Earth. Not "purgatory," but another place that precedes the magnificent "streets of gold" city described in Revelation. I have never heard this before, but it is interesting. Randy also discusses in great detail Hades, hell, the lake of fire and the fate of those who will face judgement. I plan to re-read several chapters to gain a better understanding, and use the selected scriptures as a study guide. Since most likely nobody is getting out of here alive, I highly recommend "What Happens After You Die" for all Christians, or those who are curious about what may await us when this life's door closes, and that mysterious one on the other side opens.

This is an amazing book. It helps the reader understand what happens when we die from a biblical perspective. A true support for someone with a loved one that may be in poor health or the reader themselves. This book helps people venture past their fear of death and death denial to find plain sense comfort and hope.

I have lost loved ones including my husband. I have read the Bible. This book explained the afterlife in such a way that the reader can understand it. All my questions were answered and the book put my fears to rest. I highly recommend it.

What a reassuring book. There is such confusion about the life after we leave earth and Randy Frazee has presented remarkable Biblical research that gives hope to all those who follow Jesus. Questions that plague so many are answered and leave us looking forward to the Great Reunion with loved ones and to finally see Jesus "Face to Face."

The book was not what I was expecting. I thought it was going to talk more about Heaven. That wasn't the case..

Found the book very interesting. It refers first to scripture and revelations and then interprets. Very different from catholic teaching and tv and movie ideas. But makes a lot more sense.

I found this book to be comforting and reassuring as i mourn the loss of a loved one. Mr. Frazee covers what life is like with and without Jesus and how it affects us in the afterlife. I encourage anyone to read this book and give it thought about what it talks about.

My 1st grade son was a reluctant reader prior to our starting the Zoey and Sassafras series. Now he jumps at the chance to read nightly. I read the first book to him, then he decided for the second book that he'd read the first page of every chapter. We're now on the third book and he wants to read every other chapter all by himself! The stories are engaging and I absolutely love that Zoey uses the scientific method to work through the possible ways to help each animal. There's a great Glossary with each book that explains words in easy to understand ways. We need more books like these. Highly highly recommended. Buy two sets and gift one to your child's classroom or school library - we did and they're a hit there too.

My kid and I loved this book! I just saw that the book series' website also has a ton of printables to go along with the book. Cute story that also introduced concepts like scientific method, reptiles/mammals, etc. It was science mixed in with a fun story line. Will definitely be ordering the other books in this series!

We LOVE these books. They are adventurous and exciting but they are still light and happy. It is hard to sometime find books that hold my son's attention but are still age appropriate. I love that Zoey expresses her emotions, works through them, and perseveres using knowledge of the scientific method to help magical creatures. These books are fun, but they also hit all the big ones for me -- empathy, caring, working to make a difference, scientific/critical thinking, and healthy expression of emotions -- A+++++

We have every book in this series--my daughter is 5, but I read this first book to her when she was 4. She (and I!) loved it. We had a hard time splitting the reading sessions up into multiple days. Like so many other reviewers have said, it's a perfect blend of scientific thinking and fantasy--and a healthy, positive family scenario. I would love to see more of the creatures be female, though--Zoey seems to find a lot of boy critters. Why not a girl or two? :-)I also recommended the books to a friend for his 7 or 8-year old daughter, and he reported they were a big hit.I think I was more excited than my daughter when I saw the latest book in the series was available! I can't wait for more Zoey & Sassafras!

I bought this book to read with my summer camp kids, ages 5-7. We had a week of science theme camp, and we read a chapter book over the week that fits our theme. I managed to make the book last all week but it was so hard because they kept begging for “just one more chapter! Please!” They loved following Zoey on the adventure and it was great for keep with our science theme. I introduced them to the scientific method, and this book helped back that up. I think several kids were hooked on the series by the time camp was over, I know my own daughter asked to get the rest and keep reading them at home.

Great beginning kids chapter book.

I bought this for my 6 year old as a chapter book we could read together. I told her we would read 1-2 chapters a night. She begged me to keep reading and we finished 6 chapters in one day because she just loved it so much. She told me "I just love this book, it has science, animals AND magic!". Can't wait to read the other books in the series.

My five-year-old loved this book so much, her grandma bought her the rest of the series! Intelligently written, fun, whimsical, and educational, we’ve become big fans of Zoey and Sassafras in our household!

Although the murder of the author is what first called my attention to this book, it deserves to be reviewed on its own merits, and it does have some. Richard Antoun's 40 years of experience observing a Muslim community in Jordan gave him ample opportunity to observe Islam. His family background and exposure to Christianity and conversion to Judaism gave him a vantage point to notice the similarities between the three major Monotheistic religions extant today. He lucidly describes the 7 criteria he uses to determine the fundamentalist nature of a sect and gives an even handed overview of his research. As a Christian, it was enlightening to discover how my particular denomination is characterized by an "outsider." Some of us take the verse about being "peculiar people" a bit too much to heart. He didn't make outrageous accusations, or any other type of accusation, but merely recorded his observations. I hope that's not what got him killed, but it might be worth noting that his murderer was neither Christian nor Jewish. He wasn't trying to offend, merely to inform and instruct. Dangerous practices these days, it would seem.

I have previewed this book in google previews. It appears to be a factual account of the authors interactions with individuals who are fundamentalist in their approach to their Islamic faith. I will be using it in my course at a community college this Spring, entitled 'Introduction to Cultural Anthropology'. I believe this is a book for our time given the US military incursions in Pakistan and Afghanistan. We can never know enough about other culture's points of view, and how those points of view lead to action. I am very saddened by Professor Antouns death and send condolences to his family.

The author of this book was murdered today by Abdulsalam S. al-Zahrani in his office at Binghampton University.
